Hi,

I don't know if "The Dreadful Snake" is the title, but the refrain goes, "Daddy, there's an awful, dreadful snake." Anyone know where I can find the lyrics on line? I've heard there's a whole genre of snake attacking little girl songs, so I was surprised to not find any on Dig Trad. Thanks

If you want to hear a strange rendition, "Little Girl and the Dreadful Snake" is on the newest Holy Modal Rounders CD. I think they included the lyrics too.

From the "Bluegrass Songbook"

THE LITTLE GIRL AND THE DREADFUL SNAKE
Albert Price

Our darling wandered far away while she was out at play
Lost in the woods she couldn't hear a sound
She was our darling girl, the sweetest thing in all the world
We searched for her but she couldn't be found

Chorus
I heard the screams of our little girl far away
Hurry Daddy there's an awful dreadful snake
I ran as fast as I could through the dark and dreary woods
But I reached our darling girl too late

Oh I began to sigh, I knew that soon she'd have to die
For the snake was warning me close by
I held her close to my face, she said: Daddy, kill that snake.
It's getting dark,tell Mommy goodbye.

To all parents I must say, don't let your children stray away

They need your love to guide them along.

Oh God, I pray we'll see our darling some day

It seems we can still hear her voice around our home.

Bill Monroe does this on a couple of his records.

Terrific version of this on Gob Iron, the recent release by Anders Parker and Jay Farrar. Heartbreaking and strange.

Dry Branch also does a dynamite job on this.   For my money, Ron Thomasson's voice is perfect for it.
