What The Best You Could Hope For?

It's your turn.

You've been practicing half the week, and waiting half the night.

Its your turn to play, and all eyes are upon you.

You are aware of your nervousness, but it is irrelevant now.

The time is right, and you are completely confident!

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL SESSION FANTASY "COME TRUE"?

Or,... what would you Really like to happen

That I play something somebody else likes, for a change...

Um, can it be a fantasy to actually GO to a session?

To play what I want to play, not make any (too many? too bad? ) mistakes, and for other people to like it, or at least not ask if I don't play any (insert least favorite singer's) songs.

That my fiddle playing miraculously sounds like Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh, and that my singing voice miraculously changes to one that floors everyone. Right now people head to the exits instead of the floor.

I've been to sessions where I had just about every other participant on one or more CDs! And they were willin to put up with me! I really couldn't hope for better except maybe where I'm not the only persecutionist, er I mean percussionist with a sense of etiquette. (I can dream, can't I?)

I would have to say that I would like everyone to fall in love all over again, shed tears of joy and understanding, and spontaneously sing a round of 'Strike the Bell, Landlord', without any accompaniment... in five part harmony.

Strike the bell Landlord serve another round....!

Thomas the Rhymer, I'm with you on that.

I would like to play onstage for a whole concert with Buffy Sainte-Marie, singing her songs and mine, sing together on "Starwalker", go out to dinner afterwards, and talk into the wee hours.

I would also like to go on tour with Bob Dylan, sit in on some of his recording sessions, share a couple of rum and coke with him, and watch the sun set over the mountains of Cuba.

My session fantasy involves people who aren't singing keeping their voices down or shutting up completely. I also have this one where a busload of singers show up and sing. The constant noodlers who check their watches and look bored during the songs will wander off to play with themselves. Turlough O'Carolan will be forgotten for a week or two, and tune players will learn something new.

well....I'd like...just once to have that magic 3-4 beats of silence when I finish a moving song and then nods and murmurs of appreciation instead of mechanical applause...*smile*

What I did get once was a chance to play "The Storms Are on the Ocean" on the autoharp...with Tom Paley in the circle, and KNOW that all I had to do was nod and he'd take a fiddle break , and he did it just like it is supposed to happen...guess that's my moment of fame...

Chanteyranger, I've loved your singing, swooned to your fiddle, and watched people stay up 'till 3:00 a.m. to see what you were going to do next!! Nobody's heading for the exits in the real world, get yourself a new fantasy! Mairead should hope to play "The Mouse Trap" like you...

Incidentally, I've looked up on stage more than once and thought "My God, I can't believe I'm doing this!" Have any of you? Once with Alasdair Fraser, once with Dana Lin and many times with Brian Therriault. Fantasies come true. If only they don't discover the imposter among 'em...

New fantasy, to look up on stage and hope they don't notice I'm up there playing with Rick Fielding....

(i like that if only they don't discover the imposter one...) Mine is to sound like Eugene O'Donnel just once in my life, and like Chuck said, to die in my sleep without pain and suffering, and without losing my ability to play music. I would like to die still being able to play and with people still being willing to listen to me.

p.j --You have PLAYED with Alsdair? oh, envy.........he is a very nice man, tho. I have met him, but not played with him. I guess another fantasy would be to be able to play with/keep up with/impress Frankie Gavin.....

That Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton are sitting around one afternoon and suddenly one of them, probably Dolly because we're built so similar, says, "You know, grrrls, I think we need to expand our parameters a bit. How's about if we become a Quintet and ask that WyoWoman to come sing with us and see if we can get that Mary Black gal from Ireland to come over and harmonize, too?" And Emmylou and Linda say, "Whoo-hoo. And we can have our studio musicians all be Mudcateers, starting with that swoony Chanteyranger on fiddle, right?" And Dolly says "Oh, absolutely. And we'll have that darlin' Peter T. write the copy and Alice will do us up a real purty graphic for the CD Cover..."

And on at least one song I do a real pretty, slow yodel and Escamillo doesn't cover his ears with his paws ...

I have played one song and someone shouts out "do you play any Christy Moore?" I give my usual stock reply, something clever and original like "well he doesn't play any of mine".

When at the back of the room Christy Moore stands up and says go ahead, as he has just recorded my song, ________ _____ on his new CD.

There is a stunned hush followed by thunderous applause. As I leave the stage T Bone Burnett ambles up and says, "Man, that was something! My name's T Bone and I have to cut that song with ya'll. We'll get Emmy Lou to do some harmony. What else do you have?"

Hey I've sung in Madison Square Gardens. (Ok, so it was as I was walking through on a tour and I just stopped in the middle and started singing. Still ...)

Unh, Bartholomew, I really think Emmylou will be busy, but T-Bone and I are like THIS, and I'm sure he'd give me a call to do harmonies on your new CD, except, of course, he's lost my phone number and I've moved and ...

nivver mind ...

Yes, to truly nail one. (Did it with a story this spring, and it feels Oh! So good! one kid yelped with surprise!) But to sing something (anything!) and get a sigh at the end. Barring that tho, I would love to do harmony on a Gordon Bok or Anne Dodson or Cindy Kallett CD (are you guys listening?). But I always seem to be living in the wrong place at the wrong time. I'll drive for auditions!
