In regards to the question about finding the lyrics to Tam Lin: There is a book in the Fairy Tales Series by Pamela Dean called Tam Lin which has all the lyrics to one version. She lists it as Version Child 39-A. The lyrics are at the back of the novel. And yes, the book is based on the song.

I think the words of Tam Lin are on Fairport Convention's album Liege and Lief; if not, they're very clear, and in fact I seem to remember that Fairport's remaining members have their own website, though I may be wrong in this.

I'm trying to locate sheet music or tab for the Reel, Tam Lin (Not the Ballad Tam Lin), particularly something similar to the version on the Steeleye Span CD "Time." I'd appreciate any suggestions or guidance.

Thanks,

Mike mgfinnie@spis.net

The tune is also called "Howling Wind" and "Glasgow Reel," and was composed by Davey Arthur, formerly of The Furey Brothers & Davey Arthur. I don't have the Steeleye Span Cd, so I don't know which version is closest.

Tam Lin (reel) shows in my index as being at page 53 (I have it listed as key signature F, but it's probably really in d minor) of "The Irish Session Tunebook" compiled by Carl Fuchs, Mel Bay Publications #MB96323, original publication date June 1966, but I think I got it from a local book store fairly recently. It should be available from Mel Bay. Several others have already given you music, but there's a good chance you might find similar stuff you'd like in a collection that includes what you were looking for. The book has about 120 pages, average 3 tunes per page, giving melody (fiddle) line, no chords, no lyrics. About half reels & half jigs, with a very few slides & slip-jigs tucked in on the end.

Has anyone transcribed the Balkan tune that Steeleye use for Tam Lin?
