SPENT THE GROCERIES AND HALF THE RENT I always heard:
Spent the groceries and half the rent (In other words, he's $13.73 in the hole, possibly a bar tab.) And of course the last line should say "son of a gun", not "song of a gun". |

He pronounced it "like" but he meant "lack." Or, as another way of putting it, he pronounced "like" and "lack" in exactly the same way. My father grew up in western Kentucky. Roger Miller was from Texas. I don't know how widespread this usage is/was. "I lack/like fourteen dollars" means "I'm fourteen dollars short." |

Six rounds bought and I bought five. Spent the groceries and half the rent. Like fourteen dollars and twenty-seven cents. Dang me. Roses are red. Violets are purple. Sugar is sweet and so is maple syrple. Now, I'm the seventh out of seven sons. My pappy was a pistol. I'm a son of a gun. |
