I sure would like to have the guitar chords to this great song by Roger Miller. It probably is still under copyright, but all I want is to sing it for fun'(and it is funny when I sing). Jeepman

I would question one line of the lyrics in the link PA provided (thank you for that link, by the way). Where it says:

SPENT THE GROCERIES AND HALF THE RENT
LIKE FOURTEEN DOLLARS AND TWENTY SEVEN CENT

I always heard:

Spent the groceries and half the rent
I lack fourteen dollars of having twenty-seven cents

(In other words, he's $13.73 in the hole, possibly a bar tab.)

And of course the last line should say "son of a gun", not "song of a gun".

I think Gary T heard it correctly.

However my father used lack/like this way. He pronounced it "like" but he meant "lack." Or, as another way of putting it, he pronounced "like" and "lack" in exactly the same way.

My father grew up in western Kentucky. Roger Miller was from Texas. I don't know how widespread this usage is/was.

"I lack/like fourteen dollars" means "I'm fourteen dollars short."

DANG ME
Roger Miller
 D G
Here I sit high, gettin' ideas.
A D
Ain't nothin' but a fool'd live like this:
G
Out all night, runnin' wild,
A
Woman sittin' home with a month-old child.

D G
Dang me. Dang me.
A D
They ought to take and rope and hang me
G
High from the highest tree. (Whoop, whoop, etc.)
A D
Woman would you weep for me?
Dang me.

Sat around drinkin' with the rest of the guys.
Six rounds bought and I bought five.
Spent the groceries and half the rent.
Like fourteen dollars and twenty-seven cents.

Dang me.

Roses are red. Violets are purple.
Sugar is sweet and so is maple syrple.
Now, I'm the seventh out of seven sons.
My pappy was a pistol. I'm a son of a gun.
