Room for One More?

Subject: Room for One More?
From: GUEST,Kim

Hi! My name is Kim. I'm from a small town in northern Wisconsin, but right now I'm staying with Dawn (I guess you know her as Campfire) in Milwaukee for a while. I've known her and her family since I was a little girl (I'm 27 now) and she volunteered when I needed a place to land. (I'm "recovering from some bad decisions" :-) )

I don't play an instrument but I do like to sing - I hope that's okay to be here. Dawn took me to an "open stage" a few nights ago and afterwards everyone sat in a circle and they kept playing songs, without the sound system, just taking turns. That was fun, and maybe next time I'll have a song to sing!

So - can I hang around a bit?

Kim

Come on in, and welcome to the zoo. Sometimes you have to ignore the strange noises, but it's a lot of fun here.

Funny that you should say Zoo - that's where Dawn works! She's off at work now.

Welcome Kim. If you start hanging around here, though, you might never leave.

No kidding about Dawn working at a zoo? I used to be a zookeeper myself. North American small mammals. What does Dawn do?

Best wishes,

Carol

Hi Carol! I guess I should remember to call Dawn "Campfire" here, but anyway, she is the hospital keeper/supervisor at the Milwaukee County Zoo. She has to take care of the animals that live in the hospital and give them medicine and stuff. I got to meet a baby moose she is raising - she didn't eat well enough from her Moose-Momma. Her twin brother is bigger and got most of the milk, I guess. She's really cute! Kim

Kim-

That's one of the best jobs in any zoo. Have fun with the critters.

Hi Kim,
I am putting together a profile of the typical Mudcatter and "recovering from some bad decisions" is very near the top of the list. You will fit right in. Shy is in there. Along with "previous class nerd". Sure you want to be part of this?
Working at a zoo has to be wonderful if you're not stuck cleaning out cages too often. My son went to a "Zoo Camp" at the Bronx zoo when he was nine. He got to feed the seals. There was a sleepover in the bird sanctuary. I would love to be in the zoo at night. Join us on Hearme. I amtrying to block out time late Wednesday to be there.
And welcome!
Mary

Sure thing. I don't play an instrument either, though many of my friends do.

Welcome to the ranks of the addicted, as I'm sure you will soon become.

Zoo worker! Neat!

Have fun. Talk at you later.

Hi, Kim,

Where in northern Wisconsin? My parents are from Colby and Stetsonville. I lived in the Milwaukee vicinity for 20 years. (I've been in New England for 30 years now, but I guess in some ways I'm still a Midwesterner.)
I'm also a singer. (But I married my accompaniment...and we do great harmonies together.)

Hi Mary/SINSULL-

Unfortunately, I'm not the one working at the Zoo. Actually, I'm not working at all right now- I just got here last week. Dawn/Campfire said not to worry about it, but I'll have to find something if I stay here very long.

Shy isn't a word I'd usually put in the same sentence as my name, but I could work on it :)

You're the second one to tell me about HearMe - I'll have to ask Campfire how to do that. Can we really "hear", or is it like this is "talking"?

Kim

Hi Bat Goddess. That's a cool nickname! We have bats - LOTS of bats - where I'm from! Woodruff is the nearly-unheard-of neighbor city to Minoqua, the tourist town. I live(d?) about 15 miles out of Woodruff. I know where Colby is, about an hour south, but not Stetsonville.

Thanks, all, for the greetings.

Hey, Kim -

Glad to have you hanging around. HearMe is a wonderful thing, you can hear Mudcatters sing or play, and at the same time participate in the live keyboard chat. I don't get there nearly enough.

Enjoy the Mudcat. As you like to sing, you'll find a limitless number of songs to keep you busy.

Hi Kim......Welcome and you're getting lots of good advice from folks. Try HearMe, you'll enjoy it I'm sure. Jump in and post on any threads that interest you.

Just had a great time at our zoo yesterday. We went from a very moderate zoo 30 years ago to a real top place thanks to Jack Hanna. Jack has made a name for himself on TV and the like, but the benefits that came here from his growing "fame" have been a major asset. We were one of the few zoos to get into the manatee rescue program and we spent an hour yesterday just watching them eating. I guess it takes very little to amuse me.

Hi, all! So I get home from work and find out that my new roomie has already met a bunch of you. She's asking me about HearMe, and did I know there was another zookeeper on here (no, I didn't) and what does (all kinds of stuff) mean.

Thanks, everyone, for making Kim feel welcome here!

Hello Kim! Hello Campfire!

Lots of people here just sing. That's all you need to do (though I do more)! Here is the link to HearMe. I hope to hear you there sometime!

Campfire, it was nice of you to take Kim in! Sounds like she has a true friend!

Welcome Jolly Kim. Most of the loons seem to be treating you with a certain formality and politeness. Don't worry, that will change. You'll soon be subject to the same genial abuse, genuine concern, and general lunacy which mark this place. It's a great place to ask questions, provide answers, and meet old friends you haven't run into yet. Have a good time.

Cheers,

Dave

Hiya Kim (and Campfire, of course)--Welcome to the 'cat zoo! And Sorcha's right--sometimes there are funny noises around here...and funny smells (spaw?)(heeheehee) but you'll get used to it. And do give HearMe a try. I actually just sit here and sing REAL LOUD at the computer screen (low-tech version of HearMe), hoping that'll work someday... So take your shoozies off, stay awhile.

Hello Jolly Kim & Campfire, Speaking of Zoos, have you ever heard that famous zoo song about the guy who got locked in the birdhouse one night? ..........."Torn Between Two Plovers"
Another song by the same guy is "Under the Ardvaark"

BTW, how is the moosette? (I assume that is the correct technical term for a female baby moose).

Jolly - Welcome aboard. I used to play up at resort outside Minocqua that was once a logging camp - a truly beautiful area all year round. Did you ever hear of a band from around there called Slow Motion Walter? We met them up there a while back (you were probably about 7 at the time) and they were all great guys and good players/singers. Just curious.

Hi Kim/Campfire, just to say welcome to the best forum on the web.

I've been to Wisconsin several times during my trips over the pond and I love it, the Milwaukee summerfest is a hoot. Your Zoo is a real treat, love the way you are presented with the penguin pool as you walk in. It is a pity your wolves are so shy though.

When you first posted I thought you were part of the omnipresent Nolan clan as they are from the northern part of the state and good friends, a place called Manauwa (I think that how its spelt, Bill's bar was central feature) in Waupaca county (?) fun rodeo.

Saw my first Racoon up there, we don't have them in the UK. Endless joy, look foreward to going back (next summer??)
