25 Sep 00 - 09:31 AM (#304951) Subject: RE: Who is your favorite band ??? From: Jim the Bart Yes, Desert Rose has both Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen, which brings me to another favorite - the Dillards. And this brings me to another favorite, long gone but not forgotten, Dillard and Clark. That is Doug Dillard and Gene Clark, which brings me back to the Byrds. Back in college (the first time), there were three groups that were extremely influential - The Byrds, the Buffalo Springfield and Moby Grape. All heavy on harmony and major key guitar licks. I have always had a soft spot in my head for jangly guitar; the Beatles and the Hollies sere right at the top of that kind of music (along with the Byrds, again). It seems that you find the descendants of that kind of music in the country/country rock field these days. Desert Rose is just that kind of band. Let me throw one more out there - The ArcAngels out of Austin, Texas. Stevie Ray's rhythm section and two great singer/guitarists. This is hard hitting stuff. oh yeah, and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. |

04 Aug 13 - 02:15 PM (#3545504) Subject: RE: Who is your favorite band ??? From: Claire M Hiya, Somebody was going to take me to the Cambs Folk Fest but I knew any sort of festival would be a problem, so never bothered making a habit of checking who was on. Who should be on this year but Steeleye! My love for them knows no bounds; my love of any sort of fantasy, old fashioned language & the Latin fetish I seem to have stems from them; & my favourite legend would have to be the one of the Nokken/the Sirens. Caught up via iPlayer; they played 'I Shall Wear Midnight' – will never forget hearing that for the 1st time. I cried so much my face was as red as my dress & all blotchy. Peter Knight was looking right at me as he changed I to WE. Couldn't stay off the loo for about a week beforehand (I never can anyway but this was even worse) The woman who came w/ me to see Maddy Prior on her own was so bored she kept playing w/ her phone As for the Quartet – originally went for Martin Simpson, he was good but MQ were as Steeleye-ish as could be, the women even sounded similar to Maddy, the sort of high, loud singing she does; I was disappointed when they left for Simpson to come on! Their version of 'Bright Morning Star' had me sobbing & shaking (had heard it by Steeleye 1st) |

Now: Cupola are brilliant! I recommended them to my home town folk club after seeing them and getting their CD at a festival 2 or 3 yrs ago, but as often happens they ignored me (sulk) but now I see Cupola are linked with Lucy Ward, so local fc even less likely to afford them now.. Shame. That'd be a great night! |

06 Aug 13 - 01:48 PM (#3546207) Subject: RE: Who is your favorite band ??? From: Claire M Hiya, I've dreamt of fav bands before; the members mostly pop up to give me advice, w/ them introducing themselves saying "I am ____/we are ____" & my shocked/pleased response being "are you really?! Are you sure?".For something that never actually happened they haven't ½ been vivid. This topic got me thinking; I've always seen love for bands like being in a relationship. They cheer you up; they comfort you when it's needed; they keep you going. When/if you dump them for a few years can you still say they're favourites |

How Terry Pratchett passed me by for so long I don't know. Steeleye have never led me wrong. I think I get him more now cos my tastes have reverted & I recognise the words he uses, & the description of the Chalk was so similar to the way I grew up I had tears in my eyes. Seen quite a few Morris dancers too but didn't appreciate them cos I didn't really get what they were dancing for -- luckily I know quite a few fans so I'm covered for his books. |
