Contact me for phone numbers and address for the concert. -Joe Offer- On Saturday, October 14th (Bill Wagman is) hosting a concert featuring Dave Weber and Anni Fentiman. They were here about two years ago and were a lot of fun and got everyone involved singing. Dave and Anni's enthusiasm sparkles in their powerful vocal performances, which have developed from their 25-year involvement in traditional and traditional-style music. Their first love is accapella singing, both solo and in harmony, and they acknowledge the debt of gratitude that is owed to source and early revival singers who have helped keep alive this wonderful singing style. They present a varied cross section of material from the delicate solo to the rousing chorus. Anni's intuitive harmony adds color and depth to the duo while her solo performance is clear and sensitive. From the North East of England Anni presents an unusual repertoire earning her a well-deserved reputation in English traditional music circles. Dave sings with a rich and powerful style reflecting his love of the music, from the gentle and plaintive traditional ballad to the stirring chorus song, which inspires the most reticent audience to join in.

Page for a Berkley House Concert, which appears to be the night after the one Joe gave info for. Dave & Anni were at Old Songs this year. I had one of their recordings (the Beggar's Velvet tape) and I KNEW how good they were. I love both of their voices, and the way they blend in harmony. I had a chance to talk to Dave briefly, and he seems to be one of those gentle people who is well-known and respected by many, but acts like he's completely unaware or unconcerned about it. Joe, I may try getting a RA file to Max for the radio. Of course, I probably have a slim-to-none chance of him playing it. |

All A cappella, and some of the best singing I've ever heard. It was obvious they loved their songs. Also, it seems that they love each other - it's fascinating to see how they work off each other. I have to say we had a first-class audience, too, and the harmony on the choruses was wonderful. Occasional Mudcatters Ray Frank and Dick Holdstock were there. The duo is perhaps best known for the singing of Dave's song "Lady of Autumn", although they sing any number of English tradional and modern songs, most of which sound traditional. Is that where you learned "Sweet Thyme" Jeri? We learned "Old King Coal" from them, they sing a wonderful version of "Linden Lea", and too many more to mention. |

There are 7 of us in the group and Tuesdays are our only opportunity to get together in the week. And, Jeri, I did go to Portsmouth. I searched for you but I saw nobody with a cat on her head! I was at the shanty blast til the end but then I had to leave to get my daughter and her friend home. Maybe you saw us there. I wore a black tee-shirt and white fisherman's hat. |

Anni Fentiman sings "Sandgate Wife's Nurse Song" solo on their Constant Lovers CD. The tune is the same as Liverpool Lullaby, that Judy Collins recorded on her In My Life album. Also look at Do-Li-A, which uses the same tune. The lyrics seem unrelated, although "Sandgate" appears in both. -Joe Offer- Another Webber-Fentiman song you might hear is Old King Coal, written by John Kirkpatrick. Also Linden Lea, with lyrics by William Barnes and tune by Ralph Vaughan Williams. And another - Row On. I think my favorite song from the evening was My Lady of Autumn, about unrequited love. MY Lady of Autumn loved this song - but alas, not quite enough. |

A number of his songs are in a songbook he published, and sells at the concerts, including "Blackbird", words above, and "Bonnet and Shawl" and whatever that one is called that starts "My father gave I watch and chain..." about going off to war to fight, and a sad/clever one called "the Fox" and told from the foxes p.o.v. (Note, this is a compliment, not a slam. Martin provides so much accurate information about music, he leaves many of us in the dust.) They sang and we sang and filled the Grace Memorial sanctuary with our sound. At the end of several chorus songs, they would start the chorus, and then stop singing, leaving us to sing it to them as they stood arm in arm, beaming at us, as we returned the harmonies. It was such a delight. YOu Maine folks, round up all your a capella chorus people and sing along; as Dave said, "I don't know why they call it a 'refrain', because that's the opposite of what we want you to do. And be sure and tell all his UK friends that he performed wearing pants, suspenders and a vest. He said if we did that, he might get some different kinds of gigs. Blessings, Barbara |

Coulda been worse. Not only was I not in it at the time, but only the passenger side door was mangled. Still in good driving condition, but difficult for a front seat passenger. Gotta look on the bright side, I guess. The back seat of an Eclipse is good for storage, but not for actual seating. (Unless you're under 4 feet tall and your butt is about a foot wide.) It was interesting. The concert was incredible. I love their voices separately, but their harmonies are, well, exquisite. The Wests rebuilt their house after a fire, and designed it with a room just for the concerts. The accoustics are great, and the rafters sure rang tonight! (I'd go on about this, but I am very tired right now.) |

It was interesting." Well, it was me sitting (sitting? sort of skootched sideways) in the back seat and my butt is definitely, well, goddess sized. I'm listening to Anni & Dave right now on the Beggars Velvet CD (been listening to the tape since a friend saw them in DC in 1986 or '87 -- glad I finally have a CD!). The concert -- performers and audience -- was grand. They always seem so surprised that we know most of the songs. But even though I own most of their recordings, each time I hear them in concert they sing new songs and not just the audience favorites. I 've heard them in house concerts over the past 4 years and their set lists are always different. Great performers and a real treat in an intimate venue. Bat Goddess |
