Heard an incredibly inspiring story this morning on NPR. You can hear it also, by clicking here.

Here is a brief description of what you will hear:

"Helen and Bill Boardman
"Helen Boardman is 104 years old and lives at an assisted living facility in Schaumberg, Illlinois called Friendship Village. When Helen was in her early 90s she met and fell in love with fellow resident Bill Boardman, who coincidentally has the same last name. A few years later, they were married. As you might expect, Helen and Bill are optimists, they see life as a series of opportunities and, to them, growing old is an adventure to be shared."

These two are just precious. Their love for one another and understanding of life came across beautifully in their words and voices. Extraordinary people.

Here is a description of the program they were on, which hads been running once per month for this year. It is really fantastic and all available to listen to, online:

"One Hundred Years of Stories is a series of profiles of American centenarians airing this year on NPR's Morning Edition. There are now more 100-year-olds alive than at any other time in history, and longevity studies are finding many of them are active, healthy and engaged with the world around them. Producer Neenah Ellis has set out to meet these people and to hear what insights, memories, wisdom and just plain common sense tips they have to offer. What she's finding may surprise you."

Old people are just recycled teenagers kat. bet they've had a lot of snogging practise at their age eh? Good luck to them both. Aye. Dave (who hopes to die a violent death at 93 years of age, shot in the back of the head by a jealous husband)

Cut it out, Mbo! These people both had wonderfully full lives long before they met and fell in love, in fact she was first married when she was 20 years old. Don't muck up this thread with bait!

My father died at 93, and was in good health until about 10 minutes before he took his last breath. At age 89, after being widowed for four years, he married a 78 year old woman. They said that if they had one good year together, it was worth it. They had four.

Maybe because it had no baggage packed from years before, their marriage was an unalloyed delight to them. They traveled and entertained and laughed and loved a lot. His "kids" will always be grateful that he found her.

Kat,

I too was listening to NPR this am and caught the story. It was a wonderful story of people who are very much alive and not resigned to the fate of old age. They are both living in the moment; enjoying love and companionship and not looking back to say they have already experienced the same and therefore closed to the possibilities. Can anything be better than that? I shared it with some of my friends earlier in the day because the story had a beautiful chord running throughout. Thanks for the post.

Reminds me of a story a friend of mine tells about his Grandfather.

His 90-something year old Grandfather went missing from his retirement home in Dallas and his family were quite concerned. He was eventually found in a motel in Florida ('shacked up' as my friend proudly puts it) with an 86 year old woman.

What's strange with it?

IMHO the older you get the easier is falling in love. Just because you learn to not be afraid of it but accept it as something precious. Uhm ... yes ... you must think the 'right' way for that and there are many other ways ...

Sex? When you are very young (= below 30 +/- 15 years) your ability of falling in love is influenced by sex, yes. Poor children! Later you may (you needn't) realize that it works the opposite way: The opportunity of getting THE REAL THING in bed depends of your ability of falling in love.

Hmmm ... I'm not yet 100 ... but ... hmmmm ...
