Best ever computer games!

Way back when, in the mid-80's there were these text adventures, like Zork I and Planetfall. They were great, cos you got to use your own imagination when picturing the scenes your character was wandering around in. They have since been reissued with graphics, and aren't half as good.

In military strategy: Panzer General is probably still the best, and Allied General is very good as well.

In Air Combat Simulations: European Air War

Got any favourites of your own?

JetSet Willy and Avalon and its Sequel, Dragontork. I have got a Spectrum emulator for my PC so I can still play those games and all the old classics can be found and downwloaded from the web.

Blade Runner
Red Neck Rampage! Hehehehehe!
Master Of Orion
X-Wing, but I'm a lousy pilot...

Crusader... No Remorse and No Regret
But my favorite all time 'puter game has got to be a wicked 3d puzzler/shooter called "Realms Of The Haunting"... This game still creeps me out sometimes...

Lepus Rex, I'm glad to see someone else remembers the OLD games. My comupter journey started with a VIC20 and I went through having a Commadore 64 and using CP/M things at work before geting my own PC (Amstrad PC 1512 - 8088 processor and a wapping 512K of RAM - I remember proudly adding a massive 20Mb hard card to supplement my twin 5 1/4 floppy system...". The only games for the VIC20 I had were cartridges that plugged into the back of the machine - Lunar Lander was my favourite of them.

Mbo - I agree that Aces of the Pacific was one of the best ever. I love Japanese planes...they fly like birds. However, check out European Air War...it is a whole step beyond, but sadly has no Japanese airplanes...I wait with bated breath for them to bring out a Pacific war version of it.

Pacific General was also a very neat strategy game, and quite challenging, but you don't see it around much. It used the same combat system as Panzer General.

Japanese planes were fun, LH, but I got my best scores flying in the good old USN. Love them Wildcats & Hellcats! BTW what was your highest number of enemy aircraft kills?

The only computer games I've ever played are:

3D Ultra Pinball: The Lost Continent (demo, very good)
Creatures (a fuzzy little game)
Age of Empires (demo, which ROCKS!)
King's Quest 6 (Somewhat sweet, somewhat cliché.)
Quest for Glory 5: Dragonfire (Which TOTALLY RULEZ!!!) Tombraider 3 (demo, which froze my 400mhz pentium-II-equivalent system, grrrrr!)
Yoda (demo, which I haven't even played yet...) The Sims (I hate the TV, the game got completely boring after about 2 weeks. I loved drawing clothes for the sim-people, but that was the only good part about it. PaganSim)
Thief II (demo, froze my system.) Also a couple of other demos which were so boring I deleted them shortly after starting to play them.

Quest for Glory 5 is the overall winner for me. It really made me want to play all four of the previous games in the series.

Lemmings absolutely. For the Playstation I love both Suikoden and Suikoden II. Theme Park and Theme Hospital. Most addictive: The Free Cell game that came with the darn machine. I've been doing the games in order and I'm up to number 12341...

Mbo - Yeah, you can get the highest scores flying US Navy aircraft, no question of that. I'd say that the Wildcat is my favourite of those, because it's pretty light and manueverable, as American planes go. The P-38 is the best plane for surviving in...it's a beauty. You can shoot down a hell of a lot of Japanese planes, because they are fragile and can't take much damage. Bombers, however, can sometimes be tough...their gunners will wear you down bit by bit. I prefer taking on fighter planes on the whole. The AI is not so good in Aces, compared to EAW...it's superb in EAW, so your computer opponents are tough and upredictable. I got so I could shoot down so many planes in Aces of the Pacific that it became a little unreal...but that's when I was playing every day...you soon lose your edge if you don't practice.

My favourite pilot of all time is Hiroshi Nishizawa ("The Devil" as he was nicknamed by his squadron mates).

Flying as a Japanese is a greater challenge, because most of their planes are quite fragile, so you must be very careful to avoid taking hits.

The absolute best single engine fighter is the Japanese Army's Ki-84 Hayate ("Frank"). What a superb airplane it is! I'll fly a Frank against anything.

Does anyone have an opinion on what is the BEST Roman era game for realistic battles on the large scale, where you are maneuvering formations of troops, and fighting Carthaginians, Greeks, Gauls, Germans, etc.????

How about the age of sail? What is the best combat game for that, taking in galleons, frigates, ships of the line, from the 1500's thru the 1800's????

Hawk,I still say Age of Empires Expansion for the roman era battles. It's still a glorified Command and Conquer with swords and Bows, with a little too much emphasis on fast civ growth and mass melee action, but there is an attempt by the designers to maintain some historical accuracy. And the flow of battle is quite smooth with very little micro-management required.

The games I've wasted the most time at are Tetris and Eight Off. Whenever I have them on my Mac I end up throwing them away so I can get some work done...kind of like Mudcat. Oh, and MacBugs. I've never been much on simulated combat--Crystal Quest and MacBugs are as close as I ever came. Oh, one simulation game I found quite challenging was Flight Controller. The more basic the graphics, the better I like the game.

I agree, LH! I had some of my best careers in the P-38. Though I do like the old version better than the P-38J. The J is a little TOO manueverable, more than the older model. Like the Corsair...now there's a challenge! My best career was in the USN with the Hellcat, I got transferred to some dive-bomber wings through the course of the career, and managed to stay alive. I scratched something like 805 enemy planes, and about 200 ships.

S'truth about Nishizawa, Mr. No-American-Can-Shoot-Me-Down! I took him out so many times it was pathetic. I took out 3 aces in one mission once. BTW Sugita is a pushover, and he always manages to live!

Here's a hint for taking out bombers FAST. Use rockets! I load up on rockets before the mission..you can bring down Mavises & Betty's like steam! You can also take out a zero in just one salvo!

I'd have to say my favorite Japanese plane is the George. 20mm x 2 cannons, YES! Even those bucket-of-lead Airacobras can't take that! Scratch one!

Lemmings and Simcity and from years ago a game called CATS where you jumped cats through windows. What I would really like is a very decent version of Othello. I have found because its very logical - its fairly easy to play on a high level. Nowadays I just sneek upstairs and beat everyone's score on Minesweper. ( unfortunately Cat's work out how to set them all back)

I'm also playing "The Stone", which involves solving very clever clues. Try finding it on Google search, and there are some taster puzzles to solve.

Lepus Rex, I never won at Jet Set Willy but one of my brothers did using a cheat to give infinate number of lives. I was too clumsy to win even with this cheat as there were a couple of points where if you made a mistake, you just ended up in a loop of getting killed and getting a new life!

Full details on Jet Set Willy including the cheats and lots of other Spectrum stuff can be found at World Of Spectrum.

Starglider 2 on the Amiga - stonking game. And the various top-down view driving games - SuperCars 2 was excellent.

PC-wise, I've not played since uni, but Lemmings, Doom and X-Wing kept me pretty well occupied then. 7th Guest was cool too.

Has anyone ever played "Hugo's House of Horrors", "Hugo's Whodunit", and "Hugo & The Jungle of Doom"? Insanely annoying games, invented by the insanely annoying David P. Gray. My and my sister cracked the House of Horrors, and changed all the graphics in it. We were bad! We added a burger joint, tons of esoteric references, and a disco mummy!

I loved Lemmings.....

there used to be a great arcade game called "Fire Condor" or "Phoenix" where you shot alien birds and eventually the mother ship... wish I could find it again....

Terry, Tetris is the game--I've dreamt about those four squares in their different configurations dropping down and the urgency of finding a place for them and a position to put them into in order to complete lines. I--somewhere--have a CD with several different versions of Tetris among dozens of other games. None of the versions on the disk is as good as the original, with its Russian folk tunes and its choices of different ways of playing and the ability to select a playing level. But, after I get back from a trip, I could dig them up and copy some onto a floppy and mail them to you if you'd like. Send me an eMail or a personal message with your address if you want them.

ZDnet has a lot of shareware games, some are tetris derivatives.

NONAGS is all freeware, or shareware without nag screens. you might be able to find something there.

Or just search for "shareware tetris" in any of the search engines.
