Five Pounds of Possum

My children are hungry, my dog needs a bone.
I'm out of a job now, so I'm just drivin' home.
An hour after sundown, when what to my delight,
There's five pounds of possum in my headlights tonight.

CHORUS:
There's five pounds of possum in my headlights tonight.
If I can just run him over, every thing will be all right.
We'll have some possum gravy, oh what a beautiful sight;
There's five pounds of possum in my headlights tonight.

Won't have to clean no chicken, won't have to open no cans.
Just a little bit closer, and I'll have him in my hands.
I think the time has come now, to go from "dim" to "bright."
There's five pounds of possum in my headlights tonight.

CHORUS ^^

Well, since the song mentions both chickens and possum, I couldn't resist adding this:

Why did the chicken cross the road? To show the possum it could be done.

Let's have a little respect. We're trying to make 5# of Possum Floridas new state song since Way Down Upon The Swanee is not PC. Local station(s) have already got static (no pun intended) from the animal rights gang.

Howdy Folks,

Anybody out there got an author or history for Five Pounds of Possum? With the subject matter, it's probably not old enough to be traditionally anonymous, but I know that it could be one that has been passed around anonymously since I have often done so. I'd like to give credit (or maybe blame in this case) where due.

Allinkausay,
Bill

5 pounds of possum was written and recorded (on tape) by Tim White. Possum Tapes is the brand. Details at: http://www.starclustermusic.com/artists/burritos/perkins/disko/dpva9301.htm
