Kat's Dad got his Cowboy Songs tape done

16 Oct 00 - 03:32 PM (#320025)
Subject: Kat's Dad got his Cowboy Songs tape done
From: katlaughing

I just got it in the mail this morning. It's pretty well done, considering he just has a little 4 track at home and he's 83.5 years old.

I am going to digitise it and send a copy to Max, BUT, I know I promised copies to a few of you and that was ages ago, so will you please let me know if I promised you one, either here or in a PM with your addy and I will work at getting it dubbed and sent?

Songs included are: Ol' Chisam(sic)Trail; Cowboy's Lament; Trail to New Mexico; Little Joe the Wrangler; Zuni Mountain (pool? I'll have to ask him)(update:2004, yes, it's Pool) Cowboy Jack; Girl I Left Behind Me; Billy Venero; Tying a Knot in the Devil's Tail; Hound Dog Song; Dakota Grass Cross; Punchin' the dough; John Martin(? his handwriting is as bad as mine!); When The Works All Done This Fall; Bury Me Not; Frankie & Johnny; and a couple of others, including a short bit of words to the Irish Washerwoman.

His mic level for voice drops out a little on a couple of them, so it is harder to hear him, but otherwise it is all pretty even and easy to hear. He uses guitar and banjo, plus he prerecorded electronic backups on just a couple of non-cowboy songs.

Thanks,

kat

I hadn't forgotten! And I was on the list way back when you took your trip out to see him. Even without hearing it, I'm very impressed with his repetoire. I know you must be busting your buttons with pride, dear kat. You should have my addy; but, if you don't, let me know and I'll send it to you again.

Any chance of a live performance on Hearme?

From: katlaughing

Thanks, everyone. No, Sins, he doesn't have a computer and lives about 6 hours from me, BUT I think I could turn up the volume enough on the tape player to play one or two in Hearme sometime. Next time I am in there, we can try it, if people would like.

I found out, at the end of the tape, he did this one with an eye patch on, too! Nothing serious, just a red eye that needed rest from a broken blood vessel.

Yeah, Spaw, I have to say he is pretty special to me and, yep, Aine, I am proud, and feel like I was right back at the campfire with him, as a little girl, when I heard this tape. This is not the repertoire he uses for the old folks homes and I much prefer this.

Oh, and I've always wanted to do this, "I'm so sorry, Uncle alBert." LOL...yeah, I'll send you one too, ya buggah!

Thanks, again.

Kat, I'd love a copy. I really like cowboy songs done by men who are old enough to have been, or known, real cowboys. This is special. God, I hope I'm still singing when I'm 83. Please give your dad my regards. All the best. Seamus

You bet I do, SandyGramps! Kendall, Seamus, I fully expect both of you to be in HearMe, with video of course by then, regaling us with tall tales and stories!

Seamus, if you look in a thread I started about oral history and how much to edit, you will see I am working on putting dad's oral history into a book form. He grew up a real cowboy in Colorado where his granparents on both sides settled in the early days, so you will get to hear one of the real McCoys and let me tell you he retains the very distinct Western Colorado drawl. There is a bit of commentary between a few of the songs and you can hear it in the songs, too. There aren't very many natives around anymore who have that accent. My sister who stayed in Colorado does, somewhat. I lost it when I moved to Yankeeland.**BG**

Thanks, again, you phoaks are great!

I'd love one as well, but I could probably persuade Sandy to make one for me. I'm so glad you've done this. Now we just have to wait for the book! How's it coming?

Naw, Karen, I'd be happy to send you one. Thanks for asking. The book is progressing. I have a bunch of research to get started on, now, so that I can include footnotes of interest and *plump* it up a bit.

We are moving in with our daughter next month, so it's a little crazy around here, so the book will probably have to wait awhile, but the tapes won't. Those I can do while I sort and pack!

Thanks,

kat

I'd love a copy, too. I was lucky enough to know a few old cowboys when I was far younger. Unfortunately, none of them sang. There was an old miner, though, from Eureka, NV who used to sing on a barstool Saturday nights at the Alpine Hotel Bar when he self-lubricated. His favorite tune was "Five Nights Drunk".

Address coming by PM. Please let me know of any stock costs, mail, packaging or dupe fees.

Dear Art,

Somehow I missed your posting. Thank you very much. I will be printing this thread out to send over to Dad, so he'll get your message. Thanks for mentioning the Lib. of Congress. I had thought they should have a copy, but wasn't sure of what dept., now I know. A girl can learn a lot at the Mudcat!

Just *sose* ya all know, I got organised and decided to get these done before, not during the move, SO, those of you whose addy I don't have, watch your PM's for a request of where to send them, as they are ready to go.

Thanks, again.

Kat, sorry that I hadn't responded earlier, but I would like one too, please....

From what I have heard of your dad, he reminds me alot of my great uncles, they were the real things when it came to the cowboys...they had no need to swagger or wear flashy "cowboy" clothes and big stupid looking hats, they had no need to prove their existence, they just were.

BTW you said he was 83....only 83? My god and all this time I thought that was how old you were....

I will add you to my list, I can see I'd better get some more blank tapes. That's gonna please my dad no end, thanks all!

BTW, I've been reminded that this does indeed add up a bit, so for anyone who has the ability, a blank tape or a couple of bucks would be appreciated. I like the way the Big/Midchucks are offering their first Mudcat Concert tape for $3 for postage and supplies, but the recording quality of dad's tape is not that great, so I don't want to set it as a definite charge. Sorry I didn't think of this sooner and ya'll are gitting yer tapes regardless!

Well, geez, Bet, there goes part of yer Christmas present!**BG** You and our sisters and brother are all on my list, as well as your kids and mine. Nice to see you on here. Of course you'll remember better than me, but they sound pretty close to what I recall; I could almost smell the campfire smoke.

Nathan in Texas, if you will send me a PM with your addy, I will get one sent to you, too. I am not comfortable putting my addy in the thread, so I'll PM it to you.

DEAR PHOAKS (FAMILY MEMBERS EXCEPTED)This looks like it is going to go bigger than I ever imagined. Thank you! Rather than you figure out to send a tape or a couple of bucks, how about I just say it will be $3 even and call it good? I'll send your tape and then you can send me a money order or check, eh?

Included will be little program thingie I made up, with the songs listed, a couple of photos of dad, one of him playing his B&D Montana Silverbelle tenor banjo sans the ivory resonator, a couple of very old-timey photos of his dad, a photo of the ranch and a little bit about him.

Thanks for your understanding and support!

Thanks, Amergin! No rush, just when you get to it. The first batch went out Monday to you, Jenellen, Sandy Paton, Seamus, Rabbitrunning, Giac, Pene, and WyoWoman. The rest of you are in the works.

Rick, thank you. I don't know if the quality is good enough for your radio show, but if you think it is, I know that would thrill him no end. I will get a "promotional" copy out to you by the end of the week! :-)

BTW, the only other thing I might ask you all to do, those of you who would like to, is drop him a note about what you think, etc. He says he is the world's worst letter writer, and he is, almost, so you may not get a quick reply, but I know it would really brighten his day if he heard from any of you, directly. If you are interested, please PM me and I will give you his mailing addy. Thanks a bunch! It is such a pleasure to share him with you all.

Kat, I got ahold of that tape yesterday after work and it is wonderful!!!! He doesn't sound 83....my uncles didn't sound no where near as good in their 70s....In fact your dad sounds alot like my uncles....they were larger than life men.....I miss them...I wish I had gotten around to doing an oral history with them, myself. Unfortunately, though, I always told myself I'd do it next time....Then, one year I realised there was no next time....and it never got done....they did love to talk about their lives....especially to the younger folks...It's a good thing you are doing it now... I won't be able to reimburse you until this Friday (day after payday), but I will be sending it...Take it easy.

Amergin

P.S. To everyone else, this tape is well worth ordering, if you haven't done so yet, I'd suggest you do it!!

As oxymoronish as red-headed patience can be... I got the tape!!! *bg* You'll have to pass along to your dad all of our congratulations and best wishes. How did he know that that Hound Dog song is Angus' favourite?? All of our tails have been a'thumping on the floor round here. I even "lost" it for a day...come to find out that Baboo had ran off and put it in HIS truck!! (I'll have to make him his own copy methinks..)

Take care luv, and next time you see that feller, give him a big hug from us out west!

Ah, thanks, sweetie! That's a good Baboo

NOW LISTEN UP, ALL OF YOU WHO GOT THE FIRST BATCH:

You all are TOO kind. I had listened to the first dub I made on what I thought was an okay tape player. Listened to the firstone of the second batch on a walkman and lo and behold, I find Dad got his two tracks off-kilter, on the very first song and you all were too nice to say so! He would be mightily embarrassed to know any of them went out that way.

I have redone my original for dubbing and edited out that part. If any of you would like me to redub your tape, please send it back to me. ALSO, I wised up, went to OfficeMax and found tape labels, SO, I will be sending those out to you, anyway, instead of the handscrawl you got on yours. Sheesh! You'd think I never did this for 20 years for my brother!

If anyone has has any problems with their tape, PLEASE let me know!!

Thanks a bunch!!

Thanks for your patience and thanks to all of you for your kind words.

Hi, Lane, thanks for the offer. If you look up a thread called "Mudcatter offers new service" you'll find that wilbyhillbilly cleaned it up a bit, while maintaining the integrity of the the recording and my dad's efforts, to produce a very nice CD. There is a link to his website on which there are before and after samples of ol' Sparky's efforts.

Thansk, again. Nice to see you around, again, too!
