Shameless Self Promotion - Roll & Go

What's going on here? I don't get it. Maybe I should start at the beginning.

I have been singing with Roll & Go since 1992. We do sea chanties, fo'c'sle ballads and other songs of the sea. We also do bawdy songs, drinking songs, and whatever else strikes our fancy. We are 7, 4 men and 3 women.

Generally our "season" runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. By Labor Day we are done and go into our winter habit of monthly rehearsals to keep the songs fresh and work up new ones.

But, for some reason, not this year.

This is October. We have 4 gigs this month. Over the summer we usually have 4 or 5 gigs. This year we had 12.

Anyway, you have a chance to hear us for yourselves if you don't mind a bit of a drive. We will be performing at the high school in Kennebunk, Maine, with Castlebay and Gordon Bok on Saturday, October 21. It will be a mini festival of music of the coast and the sea. We will be in at least one workshop during the day. There will be a concert that evening featuring all of us.

Our other performances this month are on the 26th for a conference of the New England Museum Directors Association and on the 27th at the Maine Maritime Museum's annual Pirate Party (mostly for kids).

So come on out to see us. Bring the SO and friends. Maybe I'll see you there.

Brett

We're working on one. May have it done by next spring. Are you located anywhere nearby?

Near to...? just kidding. No. I'm on the West coast - in Vancouver Washington, just across the Columbia river from Portland Oregon. There are a lot of shantey lovers out here and in Seattle. The Lady Washington is a local pride and joy. She navigates up the Columbia, and down to San Diego for festivals. I'd volunteer to crew but I'm home bound by two young kids. Maybe in my sixties.... :o) Be sure and let me know if you're ever out this way, Margo

Hey, no problem. Our group (see the new photos) sings a song about the day the Lady Washington was decapitated by the railroad bridge. James Nelson (the author) and his wife used to work and sail on her and live near here. We see him quite often.

Do either of you know David Lovine? He was chanteyman aboard the Lady Washington for awhile. Last I heard from him, he was leaving soon to live in Germany.

Naemanson - let the Mudcat know when your CD comes out in the Spring, eh?

Chanteyranger, the name sounds familiar to me but I don't know him. I could ask around if you want. Mary Benson knows just about anyone and everyone who has anything to do with chanteys... Margo

Hey Ney Manson, no idea why I dropped into this thread. Only ever spent a few days stateside, but 2 were Kennebunk, amongst bullfrogs and antique fishing tackle/decoy anoraks. Collect the same silly songs as you, + fishing and parodies.............Rob

Thanks, Margo. Really just idle curiosity about his whereabouts. Thought I'd ask in case anyone knew offhand, but don't make any efforts to find out. I appreciate the offer. David performed at the Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco about four years ago. He did a hilarious bit about his harmonica. The concert publicity listed one of his instruments as a "Chinese harmonica." He explained to the audience that it was only a harmonica he picked up in Chinatown for five bucks!
