Don Larsen pitched the only perfect game in series history. Who'd he beat? What was the score? Who was the opposing pitcher? Who was the last batter? 2. The "Babe" may well have "called his shot" (new film seems to indicate he might actually have "pointed") Who'd he call it against? Who was the pitcher? 3. Joe Carter's home run in the 9th inning of the 1993 World Series--Toronto BlueJays against MY Philadelphia Philles. The homerun was off "The Wild Thing" Mitch Williams...afterwards deemed by Philly fans everywhere as UNFORGIVEN. The Managers were Cito Gaston for the Bluejs and Jim Fregosi for the Phillies. I'm told that Mitch Williams was actually hounded by the fans at his house and was forced to move. Fregosi (who was just fired two weeks ago by the Jays) often told reporters over the last two years here that Mitch took twenty years off his life! The odd thing about that homer was that Mitch made the perfect pitch to Carter. All season (and all his career) Carter would miss by a mile on low and inside curves with two strikes on him. I seem to remember Johnny Podres as the opposing pitcher, who was expected to win that day. #2: Agree with previous respondent about Charlie Root. In her book "The Babe and I," Mrs. Ruth (at the time) says the mythical event and others depicted in the corny William Bendix bio-flick were all hogwash. #4: Newcombe was first black pitcher to win League MVP, among other things. #5: I'd have to guess the winningest manager in World Series annals was Casey Stengel, but that seems too obvious. Hopefully, Torre will soon move up the all-time list. Now a question of my own: does Rick have a little too much time on his hands? |
