Lyr Req: Take Me Back to Calvary

22 Oct 00 - 02:02 PM (#324606)
Subject: Possible Name Take Me Back to Calvary
From: Louie Roy

Not positive of the name, but the chorus is like this
Take me back to Calvary
Let me tarry there
Where Jesus knelt and prayed for me
It was all because he cared

One verse starts like this
I would stand beside the tomb

My Mother used to sing this back in the 1930s
Any help will be deeply appreciated
Louie Roy

As I said in one of the other (2 or 3?) threads about this, it is vaugely familiar, but I can't find it on the web.........keep hoping one of the Gospel Folks will see it and recognized it.

It makes me think of "I walked in the garden alone", the chorus of which is "And He walks with me and He talks with me, and he tells me I am His own, and the joys we share as we tarry there, no other has ever known."
Could it be that the first word is not "Take" but "Carry" or some other word?
Blessings,
Barbara

I've also done the google thing and still nothing!
Louie, did you have a thread about this hymn before....a while ago? Just was wondering as when I went to type the various search phrases they were already in my google memory!!!

If it wasn't you then there might have been some results for someone else....somewhere in another thread...

All the very best with your search, Yvonne

...and I've done the Google thing too! no luck. I'm familiar with a lot of the old Southern gospels and hymns, but this one doesn't ring a bell. I don't think it will be in a hymnbook. I have a few gospel songbooks to look in...do you have a tune? Also, where are you from? Many of the old songs are unique to the South, or the mountains, etc. I suspect it will turn up in an old music book at a yard sale, church basement or estate sale.

Barbara - I don't think it's "In the Garden" although that word "tarry" is in it.

I'll keep an ear out and mention it to some of my "old time gospel" friends. In the meantime, don't forget to check back here.

There was a thread with a generic name e.g. "looking for this song", or something but no-one had come up with any answers. The google-god will probably start inventing something to answer the huge number of questions about it because I did the google thing too.

Can you tell us what part (general) of what country you're from, Louie? That'll give us a better idea of which hymnbooks to look in.

I haven't found it and finally remembered to ask my husband if he's heard of it. He hasn't but we'll be checking his relative's hymn books when we can.

Same here, Rev. I'm curious as to whether the song is from West Va. or elsewhere. I have my "scouts" in South Carolina looking for it. Here in Kentucky we see people and songs passing through as they're moving west.

This is a duplicate that I requested in October or November and a Reverend Harp agreed to send the lyrics.I've emailed him several times but to no avail and quite a few of you Mudcatters put in a lot of time trying to find the lyrics so I'll lean on you again. The lyrics that my mother sang were like this (Chorus)Take me back to Calvary,Let me tarry there.Where Jesus knelt and prayed for me all because he cared. The starting of one verse was like this.I would stand beside the tomb.a friend told me that Connie Smith did this on one of her Gospel album but I've been unable to locate it.I'm asking for help again

Louie,

Just an outside chance, but check this out:

I wondered why I wasn't getting a lot of e-mails that people should have sent me. Then I found out last week that last May I must have altered the settings to block any e-mail bigger than 100Kb. I deleted that rule and spent over 2 hours downloading 11 large e-mails that had been waiting for me!

Check out all your settings - is there anything blocking certain messages?

Thanks Snuffy for the info all my setting are correct and I receive 15 or 20 emails every day so that isn't the problem but it is sure nice to know that a problem like this does exist and ther is a way to correct it Louie

Well Alex, feel free to find the exact site if you like. I figure our guest would better at going through the selection than I would. Feel free to choose one or two though. I'm going to go evacuate my bladder and wind my watch before I get back to putting the BB's in the eyes of the bear.
