Help: Fishing songs/angling musicians

Hey, folks,

I'm compiling a list of songs about fishing and would welcome additions. I've trawled (sic) the DT and other friends' collections and come up with a few, but I'm sure there must be hundreds more. One wag suggested "Salmon-chanted evening!"

I'm also looking for musos who like to go fishing, so we can get together in far flung corners of the world, spend our days fishing and our evenings singing fishing songs!

Similarly, a list of music friendly fishing hotels would be useful. 'twould be nice to get our fishing free, in exchange for entertaining the other guests!

I know sweet Betsie from "Pike" and there are songs by "Roachford" Then there is also, two little dickie birds sitting on a "Perch" and "eel" be coming round the mountain. I know singers who sing "Bass",the Beatles wrote a song called-Boy you've got to carry that "weight" and "Float"ing down the river on a sunday afternoon is a bit boaring, the shoals of "herring" is common. There was a group called the "Spinners". Enjoy fishing myself when I get the chance.

Woops,
Sorry, Jim, I forgot to check for earlier threads, and there are several.

At least I've landed one more fishing muso, so I'll see if we can keep this thread open to net some more! Sign up here!

Eric, we could also have anything by "Eels", Booker T's "The Weight".
Spaw'll add some maw, nae doubt.

Check out an album by either Bill Morrisey or Greg Brown. They are each avid fly fishermen and the album features some fishing songs including one called Fishing With Bill.

There are a number of songs in the Sam Henry collection of folk songs from Ulster that have to do with fishing or angling. There are 850 or so songs in the book and I read it cover-to-cover shortly after I got it but I don't recall which songs they are. Well worth a look however...

All the best,

There is THE LITTLE ROSE OF GARTAN. I think I added it to the forum sometime ago. You can search and see, and if it isn't here I'll post the lyrics/music. It ends with ...
I mind it yet tho' nine good year
It is since I was fishing there,
And spied that little peasant maid
Above the babbling Glashy head.

There's a traditional English song called "Herring's Head" -

What will I do with my herring's head, What will I do with my herring's head? I'll make it in to loves of bread, ay and all manner of things. Of all the fish that live in the sea The herring is the one for me. What do you think of such a thing? Have I done well with my jolly herring?

There are several other verses - herring's eyes/ puddings and pies, herring's gills / window sills, etc. When I do children's concerts I have the kids come up with new verses.

I haven't looked through the previously-mentioned thread, so these might have been listed in it, but -

There's an old blues song that I've heard lots of people do - don't know if it's composed or trad, but partial lyrics are:

You say you're goin' fishin'
You're always goin' fishin'
I'm a-goin' fishin' too

You always say you're fishin'
When you're out late
Well, here is somethin'
I'm a-gonna state:
Any fish'll bite if you use the right bait
I'm a-goin' fishin' too

Then there's the kids' song, Dance to Your Daddy, which I *think* is in the DT. ("Ye shall get a fishy/in a little dishy/Ye shall get a fishy/when the boat comes in")

And, of course, all the old whaling songs (yeah, all you anal types, I know a whale is not, technically, a fish).
