29 Oct 00 - 10:56 AM (#329728) Subject: How do you pronounce URL? From: Zebedee Hi, I've always thought that it was U.R.L. (three distinct letters) Recently, I heard people refer to 'urls' (earls). I hate that, sounds as if they're about to be sick... Such a relatively new term probably doesn't have a received prononciation, but I really hope my way is right! Zeb |
29 Oct 00 - 11:07 AM (#329729) Subject: RE: BS: How do you pronounce URL? From: catspaw49 Is this something that keeps you up at night? Feel free to pronounce it anyway you like.......perhaps, "yu-AR-rul." If it makes you happy, call it jablonski........and if it doesn't work, blame it on Windows or something. Spaw

29 Oct 00 - 11:49 AM (#329731) Subject: RE: BS: How do you pronounce URL? From: Jon Freeman zeb, I'd go for You Are El. I am not sure that I am right on this but I think that there is a differcence between what is intended as an acronym and what is just a straight abbreviation and I believe that URL is intended as an abbreviation. Whatever, I would love to know why someone decided to call it a Universal Resource Locator (I think) in the first place. Jon |
29 Oct 00 - 11:58 AM (#329732) Subject: RE: BS: How do you pronounce URL? From: Zebedee Jon, I don't have the answer, but I think it's a very reasonable name: Universal - can be accessed by any computer Resource - gives you information Locator - tells you where it is I'd be curious too... to know of it's origin... 30 Oct 00 - 02:00 PM (#330468) Subject: RE: BS: How do you pronounce URL? From: mousethief What's wrong with clicky? People have always made homey nicknames for technical things. Probably in the 1950's the geeks were saying, "Just don't call it a teevee or telly or something childish like that." In the early 19th century somebody said, "Just don't call it a piano or something childish like that." Must you insult things you disagree with? Does this give you a feeling of superiority? How childish is that?

And I didn't say you DID call me... only that you could, and I wouldn't care... What I'm getting at is I don't understand why some people get so offended by someone elses opinions... What does it matter what someone else thinks of whatever... What's important is what -you- think of the things that are important to you... Isn't that half the joy of being alive? That we're all different? With any luck we can share our opinions without being offended that we have different beliefs... At least that's the way it works in -MY- world... {~` |

From: mousethief I hear what you're saying, Clint, and agree with your 6:26 post, but still, I'm just not sure how much joy it brings to life to say, "What you like to do is childish." It seems a very limp sort of joy that depends on insulting other people. That's all.
