BS: How do you pronounce URL?

29 Oct 00 - 10:56 AM (#329728)
Subject: How do you pronounce URL?
From: Zebedee

Hi,

I've always thought that it was U.R.L. (three distinct letters)

Recently, I heard people refer to 'urls' (earls). I hate that, sounds as if they're about to be sick...

Such a relatively new term probably doesn't have a received prononciation, but I really hope my way is right!

Is this something that keeps you up at night? Feel free to pronounce it anyway you like.......perhaps, "yu-AR-rul." If it makes you happy, call it jablonski........and if it doesn't work, blame it on Windows or something.

Women, beer and work keep me up all night, but people asking me for 'earls' annoy me.

Maybe I'm just a miserable git. (I don't like fireworks either)

zeb, I'd go for You Are El. I am not sure that I am right on this but I think that there is a differcence between what is intended as an acronym and what is just a straight abbreviation and I believe that URL is intended as an abbreviation.

Whatever, I would love to know why someone decided to call it a Universal Resource Locator (I think) in the first place.

Jon,

I don't have the answer, but I think it's a very reasonable name:

Universal - can be accessed by any computer

Resource - gives you information

Locator - tells you where it is

I'd be curious too... to know of it's origin...

The term is pronounced as a 3-syllable word "Yew-ahr-ell", and was coined by the man who developed the HTTP browser technology while working for the CERN in Zurich, Tim ... Tim.. dang, forgot his last name! A search for the history of the Internet will bring his name up.

Exactly. No Jablonski -- given the legance he brought to the world, and the extent to which we as Mudcatters depend on his brilliant innovation, we'd be respectful to carry his naming convention for'd.

I pronounce it Your'll. Most folks around here pronounce it kinda like Allan C's neighbors. But I like Jablonski best!

What's wrong with clicky? People have always made homey nicknames for technical things. Probably in the 1950's the geeks were saying, "Just don't call it a teevee or telly or something childish like that." In the early 19th century somebody said, "Just don't call it a piano or something childish like that."

Must you insult things you disagree with? Does this give you a feeling of superiority? How childish is that?

mousethief...

It's called an opinion... I'm sure you know all to well what an opinion is...

But it's got nothing at all to do with you... don't take it personal

If I say "you're a fuckhead" that's an opinion too, but that doesn't mean it's not insulting. My question stands.

I didn't say I thought you were a f---head. I said IF I called you one it would be an opinion, albeit an insulting one.

Never mind. If you wish to believe that opinions are never insulting, be my guest.

Ya... that'd be my opinion eh!

And I didn't say you DID call me... only that you could, and I wouldn't care...

What I'm getting at is I don't understand why some people get so offended by someone elses opinions... What does it matter what someone else thinks of whatever... What's important is what -you- think of the things that are important to you... Isn't that half the joy of being alive? That we're all different? With any luck we can share our opinions without being offended that we have different beliefs...

At least that's the way it works in -MY- world...

I hear what you're saying, Clint, and agree with your 6:26 post, but still, I'm just not sure how much joy it brings to life to say, "What you like to do is childish." It seems a very limp sort of joy that depends on insulting other people. That's all.

I'm not a techie but I call it "Yew Are Ell". I think my students might see through the facade of knowledge I hide behind if I called it "Blue clicky thing"!

ewe-or-else and "blue clickies" are seperate things. As a tech support person, I call them whatever will help the person on the other end of the phone understand what I am saying. "Blue clickie thing" has been a godsend since it was coined here on the mudcat. (bowing three times to toronto - if it was originated by whom I remember)

and I use "address" more often then I use URL or "web-address".

To achieve the correct proniunciation of "URL:" Take a quart pot, fill with equal parts of creme de menth, pernod, cherry brandy, whiskey and gin, drink back in one, chase with a glass of liver salts and a raw egg....the resulting sound upon expulsion, is the correct way to pronounce URL. (Hurl with out the "H" !)

I vote for U-R-L. I've only heard one or two people say "yurl" but it sounds really ugly to me.

BTW, it's "Uniform (not Universal) Resource Locator", as it's a standardized format for specifying the location of things on the web.

no - just a couple of forums where I've actually been told I spell my name wrong (!); arguments over grammer can go one for months (between the same people, over and over and over); one where people tell an author his interpretation of HIS OWN WORK is incorrect....etc. Really makes coming to the 'cat a pleasure, even during "bad times"

U.R.L. is an alphabetism; *yurl* is an acronym; ADDRESS seems to get the job done. I reckon any one of them will get the job done.
