Well, I'm just back from two weeks in the Urals, now dashing round schools storytelling for the Edinburgh International Storytelling Festival for the next 12 days straight, then it's off to Boston for some peace and quiet??

November used to be such a calm month.

Hi Roger, there are 3 very nice resturants in that area. Poor Man's, Loafers & the Colosseum. A little pricey though not to steep but there as fine as you'll find anywhere. Barry

It's coming up. So, could I meet the Woodchuck van in WRJ at the VT Transit stop some time after 11 a.m. on Saturday? It'll be me, my fiddle, my sleeping bag, tooth brush, Trout River something, and food, probably ethnic munchies, spring rolls, dolmas, whatever is left after a week of chef-dom. I'll have to take a more serious look at bus schedules to figure out the homeward trip. I don't want tomiss anything!!

Ah, a weekend of Singing fiddling, Mudcatters, food, a bon fire. This is too much happieness!!

Susan

So do we have a roll call for this party? It sounds like it is turning into a major event! Let's see, a review of this thread and the first half shows that the following people will be there. I also went through and picked out what people have promised so far.
Barry
Animaterra
Jeri
Kendall
Naemanson
Ewain
Susan A-R - spanakopita
Deb
Bigchuck
Mzchuck
Midchuck - whiskey, cake an pie, and floozies
Roger In Baltimore
CamiSu – Leg of Lamb (and a Chicken to beat Midchuck with)
Peg - blackberry cake and maybe a mushroom quiche
Bat Goddess
Karen K
Uncle Jaque - Winter stout homebrew
kelticgrasshopper - lasagna
Guest, Lucius
Sinsull - cakes and cookies
John Nolan
Curmudgeon
Dan Schatz
Peter Johnson

That's 24 people (not counting the piles of kids chasing each other in the back yard and falling asleep in various laps). Most will be bringing their SO's I assume. Can your house hold 47+ singing partying people, Barry? (The math is not wrong. I have nobody to bring with me.)

Oh, by the way, I AM GETTING EXCITED ABOUT THIS! Could you tell?

Shame on me, I dropped my cookie one too many times. But GUEST Lucius??? I can show up with a dish in hand (besides my wife) or lend some of my culinary skills (Animaterra may be able to vouch for me). ...and Jeri--I'm a proud Mac user. No Microsoft Windows since 1994, though I appreciate your other posting.

Lucius, you can always re-set your cookie! OK - I'll make an Apple pie from your Mac then!

Barry, you may need to put a new roof on after the party as we will probably blow the current one off. I think we may all need to grease ourselves, as it's going to be difficult moving around otherwise.

The house won't fall down (????) & there'll more from the outside world to boot. We can hang 'em from the new rafters if we have to. We just got a pellet stove for the new addition so I'll be busting through the walls tomorrow & that'll add extra space & another seperate area for singing. It doesn't matter much if you come one arm as long as the other but you may choose, if you deceide to go on this mission, to bring a spouse, a kid, an instrument, a dish or whatever & if anyone has one of those new fangled CD recorders please bring that & a camera so the mudcat will have a bunch of good laughs at our expense. All knowledge of what you bring or what transpires here will be disavowed by the State Department
Jeri, the walls & floors will blow out before the roof goes which means that no matter what happens we'll still be dry.
Hi Peg, I believe Connie & Maureen McNally & hubby & Maggie Christl & hubby will be heading up from the south you probably hook up with any of them? Let me know if there's a problem
See you all soon, Barry

Barry - I have one o' them newfangled minidisc recorders I can bring. Here's another thought - we can hook up to the HearMe concert room (if nobody else is using it) when the singing gets going really well. I don't think we can hog it for the whole weekend, though. (Just wondering if/when you expect us to leave? Hahaha!)

Why not? That's the idea of having a concert room as well as a song circle room. There's no other concert scheduled that day and night that I know of.

A lot o' folks mought enjoy being there virtually if they can't get their fleshy extensions down there.

"Lorena", Sinsull, happens to be one of my favorite Civil-War period pieces! My RAFG (Responsible Adult Female Guardian) has declared the next 2 weeks to be dedicated to a frantic clean-up of the premises in preparation for the Family thanksgiving Feast (around 25 people) at the Yarmouth Clarke quarters, which I have been terribly remiss in maintaining as resident househusband. In a nutshell; I've been bad, and will probably be grounded. Shame on me... I also seem to have been remanded to "Guest" status here on Mudcat for some unknown infraction. Looking forward to a visit from Naemenson Wed. nite to compare notes, swap a song and a yarn or two, and perhaps, if we manage to get in tune with each other, conspire a bit. Stay tuned! The program Director of a local Elderly-Care facility we recently placed my Mom in has invited me/us to do our practice/jamming there, as it provides the residents with some cheap "live" entertainment - they're not real fussy - and it is a lot of fun to cheer up some of these elder folks while doing what we love to do! I plan to take them up on it, and invite anyone to join me/us here or at any such facility in your neighborhood. Last week I spontaniously brought my pennywhistle in to a little music group they had going, and after a few tunes, found out that one of the little old "Grannies" was Irish, and remembered her Father playing similar tunes on just such a whistle (CLARKE "C" Classic) for her when she was a child. Now that was pretty nifty, Mates!

Maybe Uncle Jaque will teach me to play Lorena so I can bring it to the party for you, Sins.

The two hotels closest to Barry's house are full up. I haven't checked any farther out. I guess I'll be sleeping in the car. This is not a problem for me as it is a station wagon and I do have the makings of a comfortable bed. Two foam pads, a warm sleeping bag and a blanket and all is well.

Naemanson, I'd be glad to teach you Lorena.

07 Nov 00 - 12:41 PM (#336062)
Subject: RE: NH in Nov Pt II
From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque

Naem: Kendall can probably teach you how to do it right, and avoid aquiring any of my bad habits, but I'll be glad to pick "my" version of "Lorena" for ye for comparison's sake Wed.. Not many people know all (6 I think)the verses; I only bother with about 4 of my favorites. Audience attention spans just ain't what they were in the 1850's! It really sounds nice on the gut-strung parlour guitar, but alas mine still awaits my attentions on the bench. Kendall; what, pray tell, did you do on said other thread to so alienate you, and from whom? (not that it's any of my business, but since you mention it I'm curious). That's the sort of stunt I've been pulling with regularity all of my life! Considering the way I am, It's a wonder that I'm still alive at this age! (God DOES have a sense of humor!)
The RAFG will be working late Thurs. nite (9th) till about 2100 if Naem. or any other local Folkies wanna get together to make a joyful noise. I think our freinds (one of whom seems to know Kendall & Co. pretty well) down at Bay Square Assisted Living Community here in Yarmouth (accross the street from the Post Office) would be ameinable to providing an accomidating space, an appreciative, patient and forgiving small audience, and more than likely, a cup of hot tea. Frequently when we visit, the crew on Harbor I (where Mom lives) has a gigerbread or batch of cookies in the oven or cooling off on top, eminating the most delicious of aromas. No promises, but I'll bet that with a day's advance notice somthing lucious could be arranged! (Drop me an e-mail or landline as I don't git in here as oft as before). Another option might be the Brunswick MacBEAN's Jam, but I found that it's a bit cramped in the store, although the talent that shows up there is top-rate.
The past couple of weeks have been pretty nutz, what with getting Mother moved, etc., so havn't even started the brew, and not sure if we can get to it any time soon - so in the unlikely event we can do NH, will have to punt. Naem: sounds like you're pretty well set - I don't need to remind you to bring PLENTY of insulation if camping in NH this time of year. A fair Colleen from the Auld Counterie might enhance the comfort level appreciably, eh Mate? May the luck O' the Irish be wi' ye!

As of now, Kris and I are 99% certain and Sandy (bc)is somewhere less than 50%. He has to take this Saturday off for gonad, I mean NOMAD, and may not be able to get two Saturdays off in a row.

In either event, we can almost certainly give you a ride the rest of the way if you can get to the WRJ bus station by late morning. I'm not sure about the return trip as we haven't yet decided between driving back in the wee small hours, camping on our host's floor, and imposing on my sister who lives north of Manchester.

Peter.

Thanks for the offer on Lorena, Kendall. I just came from Uncle Jaque's house where I realized what I really need is to figure out how to apply four fingers and a thumb (five digits) to six strings and make it sound like 3/4 time. Until I conquer that I might as well take a rain check on Lorena and any other pretty waltzes.

(Yeah, yeah, I know most of you out there have already fingered this out but I am slow of wit and hand.)

Have you guys noticed that the UK contingent is having a Mudcat party in Manchester, England, on the same weekend as ours? There must be something we can do to connect the parties! It's time to put on our thinking hats. Can Max and the Joeclones put something together so we can all be together in cyberspace? Do you have a videocamera on your computer, Barry? At the very least we should try to meet the two parties in the Hearme song room.

You're more than welcome to try your hand with it though, Joe will be here, so maybe he can figure out something if you or anyone else can bring along whatever it is that you'd use to attempt these tecno-leaps. Naem: STEADEEEEEY Lad!!! The RAFG has indicated that if we get the house cleaned up by Fri. (and here I sit at the PC..), she might actually be interested in taking the RV to NH... provided the weather is auspicious. This time of year, as we all know well, Mother Nature can pull a fast and nasty one on us. Remember the Edmund Fitzgerald? ME & NH in Nov. can engender a lot more fear than those rum balls, my Beloved!
Kendall: The last I knew, there was an acoustical "Jam" at MacBeans Music on Maine St. in Brunswick every Thursday evening from about 8:00 PM to around 10:00 PM. The last time I was there, there were some really talented local Musicians pickin' and singing, and a good time was had by all. It's a little cramped in the front of the store, and it's a good idea to bring a folding chair. I would call McBean's prior to going, as it's been about a Year since I've been there. Unknown if any 'Catters are in on it. Although "acoustic", this jam is not limited to "Folk" music by any means. Any takers on my Elder-Care Community "jams"?

Barry: I'm supposed to be bringing cake, pie, whisky and floozies.

I can't really ask my wife to bake after school on Friday night, which would be the only chance, and you wouldn't want to eat anything I baked. I have some culinary skills, but baking isn't in there. Whisky is expensive, and all I can come up with for floozies is Ms. Chuck and Susan A-R who will be hitching from WRJ with us. Since they're both fiddlers, I guess that makes them floozies ex officio, but don't blame me if someone makes a move and gets the end of a bow right in his frog, so to speak...

I'll probably make a pot of highly non-vegetarian beans to bring, and stop at the enormous beer store in West Leb. for a variety of ales, porters, etc. Will that suffice?

Will there be crash space on a floor if we bring sleeping bags and stay later and/or drunker than we want to drive back in the wee small hours?

Peter.

Just got the weather update, rain will have already pasted but there'll be a bit of a frost on the bathroom window, in the 40's, that's planting weather around here.
See you all soon, Barry

Jeri, I'll wrestle you for the last bourbon ball!

Barry, PLANTING weather? Some propaganda is hard to swallow. My favorite is to tell people, "Naw, it don't get cold here in winter. That's just a fable we tell the tourists so they'll go home. 'Long about December we go to the beaches and enjoy the sun!"

Sins, I'm planning on sleeping in my car. It's a station wagon and I will be making a bed in the back. However, if it gets cold enough I might take you up on that extra bed. Plus it is an attractive idea to have access to a shower in the morning. WARNING! I snore!

Jeri,
You and I can set up an all female room for an hour or so and keep the the bourbon balls with us. I don't usually eat them - just wallow in the fumes. There are about 100. So ration yourself. Have to figure out a cake that will travel well. HMMMM.

Naemanson, I will be gracious, and let you have the last ball - I'll only scarf the first 99. (Just kidding - I promise to behave.)

Allison - I knew that. Honest. Really. (Oops)

SINSULL, got a good recipe for rum cake? Bourbon cake? A nice peaty scotch cake? (Ok, ok, I'll stop.)

So what's the count now, Barry? Are you past the 1,000 mark on potential attendees?

Hi Jeri, haven't a clue as to the count but there'll be more catters than shown on the above count & then some from the singer's club in Boston, the Haddies that I sing with, some from around your neck of the woods & some from the woods further north & I imagine some that I haven't heard from that'll pop on in.

If anyone has a sure fire throat cure would you ever be so kind as to pack some up. For 2 weeks I've been in scratch hell & I just thought by the time of the party it'd be all cleared, wrong. Thanks.

Joe, when you coming by, no rush, just haven't seen any trace of you lately.
See ya. Barry

Message from the Manchester UK gathering.

We have spoken to the landlord of the White Lion. He says that it would be possible in principle to have an internet connection. We will need to discuss charges etc. when we get there.

Next challenge:- Time differences!

It appears, at this point, that all three Woodchucks will be coming. Kris has a germ today, but I will beat on her if she gets out of bed, so it will go away.

I have pulled Barry's directions out of the previous thread and will repost them for the benefit of anyone who hasn't saved them and can't find the old thread:

Off rt. 93 take exit 4 towards Derry you are now on rt. 102 east, at the 2nd set of lights turn right (towards hospital) onto Birch St. go approx 1 mile, opposite the entrance to the hospital on the left is Summit Av on your right, 4 Summit is my place coming from the east on rt 101 take exit #5 & go left off the exit ramp onto rt 102 west towards Derry, follow rt 102 throught the traffic circle at the next set of lights turn left onto Birch St, & follow above directions.

It should be mentioned (I thought I did) that as you approach the Hospital there's the Medical Office Bldg. park in there lot at the closest ent towards Summit Ave.

Hi Murray, we'll have Debra singing her share & then some, wish you were in the neighborhood, it'd be good to hear you singing.

Hi Naemanson, you worry to much, the neighbors think I'm a bit daft as it is but all the abutters are usually fond of the music.

I just posted the following message in the Manchester, UK, party thread. I hope it fits with our party.

"So, let's see. There is a five hour difference between you and us. So when you are settling in to your fourth or fifth Guinness in the UK we will just be starting in New Hampshire (that assumes one Guinness per hour). If possible I will check Paltalk and/or Hearme at 6:00 our time which will be 11:00 your time. If you are there, great. If not, at that time, raise a glass in our honor and we will do the same to you. Have a great weekend!"

We're (Midchuck, bigchuck, Ms. Kris Chuck)leaving from the Rutland, VT area about 10:00, I hope, picking Susan A-R up at the White River Junction bus terminal about 11:00, then going to West Lebanon to buy cheap ale, then to Enfield to try to find CamiSu and pick up her leg of lamb to be cooked 'cause she can't leave until late afternoon...so we oughta be there by 2:00 if we don't get hopelessly sidetracked. I'm kind of expecting to get hopelessly sidetracked.

I am coming up sometime past noon with Judy Predmore who unfortunately has to leave by 6:30 pm; I may go back to Boston with her; unless I can finagle a ride with anyone else who is leaving later (or even the next day; I am bringing a sleeping bag and a toothbrush just in case!)

I am still gonna try for making a quiche (spinach and cheddar, not mushroom unless I go shopping), and have some Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale to bring...

...and maybe I will still manage to make that blackberry cake, but maybe no one would say no to my chocolate mint brownies? They are faster and easier to transport...

Okay, but here's my question:

Any HARPISTS gonna be there?

I got a used Celtic harp a few months ago (small, 23 strings) and don't know hte first thing about how to polay it etc. and also need to ask soomeone more expert than I how to get it in ship-shape (it needs a couple new strings and tuning etc.) so if anyone will be there who might be able to advise me, I might bring that along, too...

thanks and can't wait to see/meet you all!

....except maybe Naemanson, who is scaring me...

When the city celebrated the 100th birthday of the Brooklyn Bridge, I was invited to a party on River St (?) which was directly under the bridge and had access to the roof. Fireworks heaven! Unfortunately, I thought it was River St. in Manhattan. So off I went with a bottle of good scotch only to find no one had a clue who I was. But they invited me in to watch the fireworks from their roof - the scotch had something to do with their friendliness. And I caught up with my group in Brooklyn later in the evening. I am assuming Derry residents are even more friendly than New Yorkers so i am not afraid of getting lost. Rum Cake and Bourbon balls will open a lot of doors.

um, this may or may not be helpful, but there is a huge liquor store just as you pass the state line from MA into NH...and they have an excellent and incredibly well-priced single malt scotch selection...

I got a bottle of Tyr Connell (single malt Irish whisky) there for about 15 bucks; half the usual price...

they have a great selection of other stuff too but the scotch section is worth the trip...

FYI...

Ah, an ale stop along the way, that makes packing somewhat easier. Heading for the bus with a box full of food, a fiddle, sleeping bag AND six pack, was going to be interesting. The bus gets in to WRJ at 10:20 (it's usually a bit late) so I'll be ready to head out by 11 at least, side tracks and all.

Sorry, no spanakopita, just an assortment of ethnic snack foods, falafal, borek, wontons, baba ghanoush, guacamole, spring rolls, cookies, whatever was left and appealed to me.

See you all tomorrow!! So MMario, start driving. C'mon, you can do it!!

Here is a post I just left in the Manchester, UK, thread. We are on for the first ever Manchester to Manchester Transatlantic Mudcat Music Party!

"OK Gang, we are on for a connection at 6:00 EST (11:00 GMT) using PalTalk. Jeri says Barry might not yet have his computer set up for Paltalk but we can twist his arm to get that taken care of.

Party Hearty!"

BTW I haven't seen much interest from the other Mudcat music party that's going on this weekend in Leeds, Scotland. I tried to get their attention but no go.
