HOUSEWIFE'S LAMENT

Come and listen and I'll tell you of my darling Andy
He's tall and fair and slightly bandy
At drinking porter he is quite handy
And he loves me like a devil on a Sunday

Chorus:
O roy-o and a diddle-lum dandy
I want a man who will tickle my fancy
Bring me chocolates and cherry brandy
And love me night and morning

Monday night his head is achin'
It's down to the pub for a cure he's makin'
Doesn't he know that my heart is breakin'
We never make love on a Monday

Tuesday night and he gets no bolder
There's pains in his back and his neck and his shoulder
The weather's wet and it's getting colder
What an awful day is Tuesday

Wednesday passes, it is quite dreary
Thursday night and he's feelin' weary
Friday night though I am quite cheery
Two more days till Sunday!

Saturday night and he's struts and prances
It's down to the pub like a madman dances
12 o'clock and I've lost my chances
He's sleepin' in the parlor

Sunday night and I'm feeling rosy
A man and his wife by the fireside cozy
That's the lot, for you're far too nosy!
What a wonderful night is Sunday!

Sung to the Irish air Óró Sé do Bheatha Abhaile (Óró Welcome Home). From the singing of Kathy DeAngelo (McDermott's Handy), who learned it from Debbie McClatchy. I've also heard it sung by Caryl P. Weiss.

There's a very different song in the database and in "Rise Up Singing" that has the same title. You'll find a recording of the song on "Never Grow Old," a terrific album by Anne Hills and Cindy Mangsen.
The song posted above is reminiscent of Peggy Lee's "You Gotta See Your Mama Every Night (Or You Can't See Mama At All)," which was posted in this forum a while back.
Does anybody know where I could get a recording of the "Lament" that's posted here?

Joe...if we can't find a recording if it, I have a tape of a friend singing it that I can copy for you...(does a good job, too...)I am not sure right now who recorded it commercially.

I'd like that, Bill. I think this song would be fun to sing. Let's wait few days and see if somebody finds out where I can actually buy a recording.

Yes, I also expected to see that other song, "...nothing is worth the time you take on it, nothing does last except trouble and dirt..."

Dennis says the song on this thread goes to the tune of Oro 's é do bheatha bhaile; the good news is that this tune is on Mudcat midis
See this threadfor the abc
If you are interested, here is another thread on the Irish language song (which does not have the same theme)

I can't reach the Mudcat midi link, but if you go to the first thread mentioned and click on the blue song title after the words "Mudcat midis" you'll get the audial file

I found a request for this song buried in a very old thread, but the thread was so confused, and covered so many songs that I thought it would be best to start a new thread for it.

Copied from the Pennslyvania Renaissance Faire web site. No source is cited, but I suspect it is a fairly recent composition:

Sally Rogers used to sing this one.

Charley Noble
Note from Joe Offer: I'm quite sure Sally Rogers sang the other Housewife's Lament, but I don't know of her singing this one.
