This site works well but when we set up a hearme session we should make the room private, because there were some unpleasant visitors when Jacko and I tried it.. Jon if you are around, I think this Paltalk will work but it needs someone who is familiar with setting up a room to make the permanent hearme link on it. Cheers. Dave (tam)

Dave, if we are to use PalTalk, there are various options that could be considered.

The first choice is whether to make a group permanent or temporary.

A temporary group needs to be set up each time it is created but that doesn't take too long. A group can be open to all, private or password protected. The drawback with creating a private room is that it requires emails being sent to allow others in. If we are to use this type of room, and want to restrict access, I feel that password protection would be a better solution.

A permanent group allows the settings to be given once but requires someone with admin rights to open the room (a group can have an unlimited number of admins). It seems to have the advantage of allowing more control over obnoxious users, as any admin can boot them. It offers the choice of an open or a locked room, a locked room requiring a code to enter.

On top of this there is the question of ratings for a room. The choices are G - general audience including children, R - adult content but no sexually explicit conversation and A - anything goes!.

I am still not sure that we need to make a move yet and would be reluctant to do so unless we have to. My own inclination would be to set up a permanent open room (I think we can be welcoming to others provided we have admin control) with a rating of R (The reason I suggest R is that G rated rooms are monitored and are subject to text filters and I object to that on principle) and to hand out the admin key to anyone who may require it.

Before we do anything other than test the operation (sound quality and suitability for us), I feel that more discussion is needed especially if a permanent room was to be used in the future.

I've just read Judy's post in the other Hearme Now thread, and it's not looking to good for us, at least not until the end of the year and there is no guarantee that the new product will be free or anymore reliable. I think that the time has come to move.

I am quite happy creating a room in my name and allowing others admin rights to open it and moderate it if necessary. Shall I go ahead and if so, should it be locked or open and what rating should I give it? The only fear I have with using the R rating to avoid the monitoring/ filtering and keeping the room unlocked is that it may be difficult to use persistanlty using foul language as a reason to boot someone.

a first for me...could NOT get the thing installed!...It asked me to register as a new user, then told me I couldn't be found among registered users!(not sure whether it found other 'Bill Ds' or what it's problem was)...it seemed to be unable to tell that it was creating multiple copies of itself when I retried...

I uninstalled EVERYTHING.(I think)...and when I tried again, it IMMEDIATELY put my name in the sign-in box before asking me to register...then told me it was 'not initialized'.....

not sure what to do......

I had the same problem as Bill when I tried to sneak back in under a different name. (I tried registering as someone else.)

The REASON I had to try to sneak back in was because cranky old Jon kicked my ass out of the room. It went sorta like Me: "I wonder if admins can kick each other out." Jon: "I don't know. --- THWAAAACK!!!" Me: "@#&*!!!" When I tried to get back in, I was told I was banned for 24 hours. I'm hurt. Sniff, sniff. (Not really)

well,it will NOT work....when I click the sign-on, I get an error message from Norton that says I have a crash in

"OleMainThreadWndName"

and I am unable to delete everything and re-register under ANY name...

at the PalTalk web page where you check registration problems, it says I am NOT registered under the name and email/password I used..(and always use)...so if I am not registered properly, of course it won't let me in...but I can't get it to allow me to register!!...no new names, no old names....no way to uninstall and start all over at the beginning, because when I do what I think is a total un-install, and then re-install, it installs the files and brings up the sign-in box without displaying ANY registration dialogue...just a box with "Bill D" and a place for a password(how does it KNOW I am Bill D if it is a clean re-install??)....and when I use the only password I know, it BOMBS and starts me all over!......*grump*

Everyone must be gone now.

I didn't see the mudcat room, so I went into some of the other music rooms. My sound kept fading in and out like someone was turning the volume on and off very quickly.

The setup looks alot like the rooms and lobbies of the full HEARME service. For that service you also have to download software, register with a user name, etc. (See the earliest of the HEARME posts). I don't know if the permanent HEARME lobbies using their full software are any more or less stable than Paltalk.

I was just in there - no Mudcat room, and now i know why! I did drop in to a couple of other sites with talk, text & music; sound cutting out quite badly, but one of the occupants advised me to go "Setup" > "Advanced Sound Settings" > and check boxes #1, 3, and 5, then reboot. The format is very reminicient of HearMe - which I havn't been able to get into for quite some time now. Do we have to have "Adult Content" enabled for Mudcat (when it's on)? How do I contact or "call" fellow 'Catters on this thing? I tried calling Kendall with "Ken 95" but no dice!

Subject: RE: Hearme-Paltalk New Hearme Now
From: Jon Freeman

I have just found this in the FAQ. It may help some:

Q. When I complete the final dialogue box, during registration, Paltalk freezes.

A. Try this test out: Start up a DOS window and at the prompt type "telnet 209.67.17.227 5002".
When you press the Enter key a window should come up that says "Hello".
If this does not happen, then you will probably not be able to connect from the computer and location you are currently dialing from.

If, however, you did receive the 'Hello' in the box, then what you need to do is download a special program by clicking on this link. Save this program to your desktop and run it. It is called 'regfixer.exe'. It is a tiny DOS console application which should pop up a DOS window very briefly and then disappaear. Then try the registration or logon once again. This has been known to fix many connections. Please write to support@paltalk.com and let us know if this helped you or not.

Note: If you are an America Online or Compuserve user and you are getting this message, or if you cannot hear the person you are talking to (or vice versa) your best bet would be to switch to a free ISP such as Alta Vista, NetZero, FreeI.net or any other of the range of free providers out there. Your Paltalk woes should end there.

Thank you so very much for allowing me to read about the beginning of how the Pal Talk experience came to be. I found it very interresting and enlightening not to dis-clude a bit humourous affection from one that has been through the trials and tribulations with Pal Talk. My over aall experience with Ppal Talk has been a very pleasant onee and will continue to be so. One day I must pay a visit to Hearme if only to have the comparison to judge Pal Talk quality by. Thanks again for the great background information!!

Katcina, our suspicions about Hearme proved true and the service was eventually withdrawn in January this year. Another company is offering to provide a free service that allows web masters to voice enable their web site which was mentioned in the threads a few weeks ago. I don't like it and can't host it anyway. I don't know if anyone else has tried.
