Subject: Royal Forester and Little Begger Man

I have been scouring the net for the lyrics to these 2 songs. I finally found one (and I mean only one) reference to Royal Forester at the Steeleye Span site but no lyrics. I still have not found even a reference to Little Beggar Man.

Anyone have these lyrics?

Jeff, Welcome! If you're new to Mudcat, try plugging in a keyword from the song you're looking for into the DigiTrad Search box first to see if the words are in the HUGE Digital Tradition database - I pulled these with the words "forester" and "beggarman". If you don't find what you're looking for there, call in the cavalry on the discussion line!

Here is a version of the ballad "KNIGHT AND SHEPHERD'S DAUGHTER", but not necessarily the one that Steeleye Span recorded. Maddy Prior and Tim Hart tend to edit the ballads they perform.

And THE BEGGARMAN'S SONG (JOHNNY DHU) is one version of "Little Beggarman".

There are 5 versions of Child #110 (The Knight and The Shepherd's Daughter) in the Digital Tradition Database already, but are blessed with only one tune between them. Numbers 1 and 2 have been commercially recorded, by John & Tony and by Norman Kennedy respectively; 3 and 4 are from the ballad collections of Buchan and Percy, respectively, while #5 was collected by Sharp.

Here are another five, each with its own tune:
  1. Knight William recorded by the Young Tradition - close to the John and Tony version.
  2. Royal Forester recorded by Steeleye Span - close to the Norman Kennedy version.
  3. Shepherd's Daughter collected by Percy Grainger in Lincolnshire.
  4. Sweet William collected by Desmond and Shelagh Herring in Suffolk 1958-59
  5. Sweet William collected by Desmond and Shelagh Herring in Suffolk 1960
BTW: I already sent the words to 2-5 and the tunes to 3-5 to Dick Greenhaus some time ago.

This couple they got married, they live in Huntly town,
She's the Earl of Airlie's daughter and he's a blacksmith's son.

These two Suffolk versions were collected within a year of each other and less than five miles apart, but appear to have travelled very different routes from the original source, and must have diverged a considerable time ago. Although both deal with only a small section of the original, they include or omit different parts of even that, and not only the tunes, but even the versification completely differ from each other.

From the singing of John Strachan. The first English text appeared in Anchovy Ram's elementary drum tutor 'Half way to Para-diddle', published in 1293. Although a faithful translation of the original Latin there is still scholarly dispute as to the spelling of the name 'Erwilian' and over the use of the word 'leylan'.

This song was recorded by Steeleye Span for their fourth album Below The Salt, which was the first of their longest-living ``classic'' line-up. A live recording from the Royal Opera Theatre in Adelaide during Steeleye's Australia tour of 1982 was intended for inclusion on the On Tour Australian release but was subsequently deleted due to time limitations of vinyl pressings. It appeared later on the Steeleye Span / Maddy Prior sampler A Rare Collection 1972-1996.
