Johnson Girls - New CD

14 Nov 00 - 09:07 AM (#340394)
Subject: The Johnson Girls - New CD
From: GUEST,Liam's Brother

Barry Finn recently mentioned in another thread that The Johnson Girls recently released a new CD. Most people who've heard the recording like it so much that I thought it deserves a thread of its own.

Who are The Johnson Girls? Five women who live in New York City and who sing maritime songs including chanteys and songs about the role of women and the sea. They are part of the official sea song group at South Street Seaport Museum.

You can look at the CD cover and hear "snip-its" of a few tracks at the Folk-Legacy website. Why don't you stop by Folk-Legacy and let other Mudcatters know what you think right here!

I bought the CD at the Getaway, and it's one of my favorites. Oh, alright, it currently is my favorite.

The harmonies are incredible and the song selection couldn't have been better. Anyone who's thinking "a 'girlie' shanty group? HA!" - the Johnson Girls have more (please excuse expression) balls than a golf course water hazard. Their singing has both power and beauty, and this CD is a "must have" for anyone who loves sea music or just top notch unaccompanied singing. In my opinion, of course...but I'm right!

Jeri, of course you're right. Having also bought the CD at Getaway I keep going back to it. It's just plain good stuff. It's gotten me through more chores in the past few weeks than I care to think about. Some lyrics and liner notes can be found at www.thejohnsongirls.com. Definately on the must recommend list.

Yep, if you ain't got it, get it........that's an order from the ole Big Mick. As I mentioned in the other threads, this fine piece of work got "appropriated" on my ass by my 8 year old daughter who takes it to school and wants to start a Johnson Girls fan club. I WANTED TO START THE FRIGGIN' JOHNSON GIRLS FAN CLUB!!!!!! It is rough being the only male in the kingdom. I never get my way. But back to the CD. These folks know how to sing these songs. You will hear harmonies delivered that will evoke whatever emotion demanded by the song being sung. And don't delude yourself into thinking that women can't do this music. Forget gender for a bit, this is one of the finest CD's of this type of music you will find anywhere. It is no wonder these ladies are such a smash hit in Europe.

I loved Bonnie Milner the first minute I met her, after hearing her and her mates sing on this CD, .......... all I can say is that I am a huge (literally and figuratively) fan. Now let me see if I can swipe that damn CD back from the 8 year old.......mutter, grumble, grumble...........

Mick

Just proves that Mick has raised a daughter with good taste! (Keep the CD, Ciara. Make him buy his own copy -- it'll help feed the performers.)

Adding my voice to the chorus. These gals can REALLY sing. Actually (bit o' thread creep), hearing Bonnie and Dan (a.k.a. Liam's Brother) sing at NOMAD again this past weekend was such a treat. When you go to the Folk Legacy site, don't just buy the Johnson Girls CD. Throw in an order for Dan's Irish songs of the Sea CD. Together, Dan and Bonnie represent singing that's as good as it gets. (Can we just start a MILNER fan club????)

Try to get Bonnie and Dan to do "The Cornish Lads" on Mudcat radio. They sang it in the chorus songs workshop at Nomad with Bonnie taking the lead -- great song! Not on the Johnson Girls CD, but... They'll record it sometime, I hope. Dan's singing of "The Cruel Mother" in that workshop was absolutely stunning, too.

It was about time that they finally cut a CD & a great one they did at that. Their collection of songs covers oceans & their handling of the songs themselves goes far beyond that, this has been a long time coming. One of my favorite treats at the Mystic Sea Music Festival is late at night singing with one or all of them, it's more fun than......no, not gonna say that. You just gotta hear them that's all. Max played most of the song I sent about 2 hours and 50 minutes into last Tuesday's (14th Nov 00) show. I also sent a song from NexTradition's CD, which got played a lot earlier in the show.

Both CDs are available from Folk Legacy (as Liam's Brother pointed out) Click here for the Folk Legacy website - there are Johnson Girls sound samples there.

If you are a fan of the Johnson Girls, you may be interested in The NexTradition. They are Johnson Girl Alison Kelley -- she's the tall one with the dark hair and the husky blues-like vocal style -- along with Ken Schatz. "Sheep in the City" fans will recognize Ken's voice!

You can learn more about The NexTradition from their website: http://www.nextrad.com

Their first CD, appropriately titled The NexTradition, was recently released. It features 18 a capella tracks of traditional and traditional sounding songs. If you listen closely, you can hear another Johnson Girl, Deirdre Murtha, joining Ken and Alsion on "Bonnie Light Horseman," one of my personal favorites. You can also hear Heather Wood, sole surviving member of the legendary Young Tradition, singing with Ken and Alison on "Byker Hill," one of the Young Tradition's signature numbers.

So I guess it is time to officially welcome Joy Bennett to the Village of Mudcat. Welcome, Friend Joy. Please contribute to the place. We are glad you are here. I still can't get my freaking CD back from my 8 year old daughter so I guess I am just going to have to buy another from Sandy and Caroline.

May I suggest that you take a look at HERE for some memorable Mudcat threads. I would specifically recommend the Carrickfergus, Spancil Hill and Why We Sing, threads on that page. You might also look for some of the early "Tavern, Pub, etc" threads. The Vietnam song thread also seemed to cause a bit of a stir. These will give you a feel for the place. The more you wander, the more you will find. We got it all.............music, discussion, lunacy......LOL

Joy, welcome to Mudcat. Steve, welcome to you too, since I haven't said it yet. Information on gigs can be posted in What's On!!!. The events listed there are read on Mudcat Radio.

Got a little teasing appertizer this past Wednesday night. Two of the five Johnson Girls -- Maggie and Alison -- showed up at the monthly community sing in Brooklyn. Even at 40 percent strength they were awesome. Think 80 proof gin.

Community Sing takes place the first Wednesday of every month beginning at 7 PM. Location: Ethical Culture Society, 53 Prospect Park West near 2nd Street in Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York.

At one time or another I have seen four of the J-Girls show up. The only one I haven't seen is Bonnie. Maybe some day!

I know Joy isn't shy, so I presume she won't mind that I mention that her other group, Water Sign, will be appearing at the Advent Lutheran Church in New York City on Friday evening, November 2, 2001, at 8 o'clock. I know that seems like a long way off, but it really isn't. Anyway, if you join New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club you can attend that concert for free. Otherwise the adult general admission is $13.

Advent Lutheran Church is located at the corner of Broadway and West 93rd Street on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. There's a wonderful Thai restaurant just one block north. Have dinner -- the coconut milk soup is magnificent, as are the spring rolls -- and then come hear Joy Bennett along with Steve Mayer, Ellen Weiss, and David Kleiman.

In some ways, this is just an opportunity to refresh this thread and give a plug for The Johnson Girls and their recordings, but I have a question:
Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin did a wonderful job singing gospel and old-time music as the "Johnson Girls" in the Prairie Home Companion movie. The end credits thanked The Johnson Girls for the use of their name in the movie. Is that "our" Johnson Girls they were thanking, or is there another group with that name?
