Hello all,

I'm searching for the lyrics to a bluegrass song called "Did You Ever Go A-Courtin', Uncle Joe". I heard parts of it on The Chieftains album Another Country, and I'd like to play around with it a bit. Can anyone help?

Thanks, ~Vash

Well, the beat is the same as this one in the DT--Click here but that particular verse is not there.

We do this as 'Hop High Ladies' but I've also seen it called 'Step Lightly, Ladies'. I believe it's an old tune.

The Fiddler's Companion has an extensive entry on this:

There's also a nice version on a Buffy Ste. Marie album called "I'm Going to Be a Country Girl Again." Some of the lyrics are:

"Does your horse carry double, Uncle Joe, Uncle Joe (3 times)
Don't mind the weather if the wind don't blow...

"Would you rather ride a pacer, Uncle Joe, Uncle Joe (3x)
Can't mind the weather if the wind don't blow...

Up up my ladies, two in a row, up up my ladies, two in a row

Was she once a single footer, Uncle Joe, Uncle Joe (3x)
Don't mind the weather if the wind don't blow

Up up my ladies again...
