BS: Seeking your prayers/thoughts/etc

27 Nov 00 - 01:36 PM (#347110)
Subject: Seeking your prayers/thoughts/etc
From: mousethief

My mother-in-law died last night, and my wife is back in Arkansas with her sister and father and aunt, while I'm here in Seattle with my stepkids whose grandmother just died (their first grandparent to die). It's very unlikely any of the kids will get to go back for the funeral, as we can't afford to fly them all, and especially at last-minute airfares.

Please keep us all in your prayers/thoughts/etc. This may be a really rough week for all of us.

Thanks,
Alex

Alex - my thoughts are of course with you and your family. It is especially hard on kids, I think. Death in general, let alone the death of a relative.

I doubt anyone has to tell you to encourage them to express whatever emotions they are experienceing. Denial or bottling them up will only hurt more in the long run.

This does not seem to have been a good weekend to be related to mudcatters...

Alex, I am sorry for your loss and give thanks that you, your wife, her family, and your stepchildren find solace and comfort through shared memories and love of one another.

This has been a tough week for all of us, it seems.

Mike B. - they cna do amazing things concerning strokes these days, hang in there and remember that hearing is the last faculty effected, so talking and singing to your dad will help. I will add your dad to my list, as well as you, and your family, Alex.

My good thoughts go out to you, Alex, as well as the rest of your family. I'm sad to hear of your sadness. Remembering, and sharing family stories can bring comfort when someone you love dies, and it might help you and the kids. A warm hug to you all.
Mike, I pray that things go well for your father. I hope the diagnosis is early enough in whatever problem it turns out to be for things to go smoothly.

mousethief, I send my deepest condolences. Good luck with helping the children through this difficult time. I have no words of wisdom being so new to this type of situation myself, but it sounds like you have a loving family unit, and I'm sure that will help them immensly.

mkebenn, good luck with your father. I'll be holding him in my thoughts for the best possible outcome of his situation.

I send my condolences to your wife, your step-children & you.

If the funeral is a day or two off try to all get there so you can say your goodbyes & be with all the rest of the family. Most airlines have very generous bereavement or family emergency rates. You might not have been able to get much discount yesterday simply because most of the planes were already booked solid with people going home from Thanksgiving. Today or tomorrow they might be able to come through with a much better fare.

Subject: RE: BS: Seeking your prayers/thoughts/etc
From: KathWestra

Dear Alex, So sorry to hear of your loss -- and your financial dilemma with the funeral. Burke's suggestions are good ones. Northwest Airlines moved heaven and earth to get me back to Michigan from Montana, where I was on a business trip, for my Mom's funeral three years ago. I had gotten to Montana on an economy roundtrip ticket from Washington, DC. They charged me nothing extra to fly to Michigan, and ended up offering $1,000 in travel vouchers so that they could get a volunteer to give up a seat out of Bozeman. When it came time to book a one-way flight back to D.C. from Michigan, they charged me a bereavement fare of only $200 (a fraction of the usual 1-way cost).

If going there doesn't work, you and your stepkids might want to consider setting aside a special "memorial" time as a family at home -- maybe at the same time as the real funeral. Talk about the person you've lost, share memories, sing a song, look at family pictures. And know that you're in the thoughts and prayers of lots of friends and virtual "family" here on the Mudcat.

Wishing you strength and love to get through this tough time. Kathy

Mike- Glad your Dad's OK, these things are so scary. Keep on him about the medications.

Alex- We've never gone head-to-head, you and I, as I don't post a whole lot. But I appreciate your presence at the Mudcat, and want you to know my thoughts are with you. And especially with the kids. And let your wife know The Mudcat Cafe stands in support. Maybe show her this thread. Anyway, floating good thoughts and prayers westward from Colorado, across the Rockies and against the prevailing winds. Bless You All, BlueJay
