Anyone know the lyrics to "Swinging on the Outhouse Door"?

Hmm. Well there's an outhouse website out there...

And there's a thread with one message with that line in it. I also saw a reference to a country western song. Got any other lyrics to try to work with?

Well, I doubt that's there's a "definitive" version. The way I learned it in Wisconsin in the late 1950's was:
And then there's Grandma,
Swingin' on the outhouse door,
Without her nightie,
And Grandpa yellin', "More, More, More!!!"
And there you have it.

Here's the way I learned it in Colorado:

And then there's Grandma
Swingin' on the outhouse door
Without her nightie
Swingin' in the cool night air
And then there's Grandpa
Tellin' her to swing some more

Thanks, folks. Believe it or not, I needed it to use in a eulogy. All I knew was the big (repeated) finish (think "jadda jadda jing jing jing" over and over)
Swinging on the outhouse door
(Without her nighty)
Swinging on the outhouse door
(She charged admission)
Swinging on the outhouse door
(That is the last time)
Swinging on the outhouse door
(Ha ha I fooled you)
Swinging on the outhouse Do-o-o-o-r!

As long as we are gathering kindred minds on kid stuff-

Isn't granny and the outhouse door a "tag-line" to a longer and more detailed song? It could be ten dark nights but I thought it was more risque?

Gargoyle

Subject: 'Swinging On The Outhouse Door' bawdy song lyrics
From: John M.

This song seems to be a primarily a free floating bawdy tagline. See this google search.

Joe Offer, would you be willing to sing your version of the song for me? I am curious to see of the tune is the same for everyone.

Anyone who uses this as a *tagline* would you be willing to give me a ring and sing the song over the phone for folklore purposes?

If yes, you can reach me afternoons at 314.647.3883 or evenings 314.381.0492.

Any help is appreciated.

Yours,

John Mehlberg

Nice talking with you, John. I'd sure like to identify the tune for this tag. I'd guess it was a tune for tag used in vaudeville shows - with different lyrics.

Note how Mrzzy uses this tag in Vinter in the Valley Green.

I learned the tag in southeastern Wisconsin, probably at camp - but I can't remember if it was the Boy Scout camp I attended or the Catholic boys' camp where I worked. The Catholics paid better, so I turned down the opportunity to work at Boy Scout Camp. Too bad - I'm sure I would have finished those two merit badges and made Eagle Scout if I had accepted the Boy Scout job.

But anyhow, I don't recall the tag being connected to any particular song or occasion - if there was a lull, somebody might throw this in. By the end of the first line, everybody would join in.

Here's a camp song called (I'M A) JUVENILE DELINQUENT that has the "And then there's grandma, swinging on the outhouse door" ending. Unfortunately, I don't know the tune. Could it be I'M A YANKEE DOODLE DANDY?

Another variant:

And there was Grandma,
swinging on the outhouse door
Without her nightie,
Singing on the outhouse door --
And there was grandpa,
Sweeping up the outhouse floor
With Grandma's nightie,
Sweeping up the outhouse floor.

The tag-line....as I know it....is an American Burlesque/Vaudville style....something for sax or clarinet....a nice mellow wanging-twang.

However, my version has:
An there was grandpa
Cryin' more, More, MORE!
In his pajamas.

Gargoyle

The version I heard was:

I'm a juvenile delinquent
I roam the streets from one to four.
I drink and smoke with other kids in town
waiting for my pickup to come.
I'm a juvenile delinquent,

My mother hates me, my daddy beats me,
as for my granny,
Swingin' on the outhouse door,
as if she owned it,
Swingin' on the outhouse door,
without her nighty,
Swingin' on the outhouse door.

(Michigan) We used to insert a name of someone (in the 1960s) and go around the circle of girl friends:

Rita...
Swinging on the outhouse door
Without her nighty
What the heck's a nighty for?
To hide her hidey
What the heck's a hidey for?
Go ask your momma!

Then the next name would be inserted and the song would repeat.

We prefaced the granny tag with a song called "Nanny's Bloomers".

Owing to the power of free association, and for no other apparent reason, this thread brings to mind another Grandpa/Grandma ditty:

"Caviar comes from the virgin sturgeon,
The virgin sturgeon's a very rare fish.
The virgin sturgeon needs no urgin',
That's why caviar is my dish!

I fed caviar to my Grandpa,
      He's a man of ninety-three.
The virgin sturgeon needs no urgin',
He chased Grandma up a tree!"

I learned these lyrics in the 1950's

"And there was Granny
Swinging on the outhouse door
without her nightie
'Coz she had pajamas on"

But this was always stuck on the end of

"Twas a cold winters evening
The guests were all leaving
OLeary was the closing the bar
When he turned to the lady in red and said
Get out you can't stay anymore

She shed a sad tear
In her bucket of beer
As she thought of the cold night ahead
When a gentleman dapper
Stepped out of the crapper
And these are the wordsthat he said

Her mother never told her
The things a young girl shoud know
About the ways of college men
The way they come and go
Mostly go

Now age has taken her beauty
And sin has left its sad scar
So remember you mothers and sisters boys
And let her sleep under the bar

Between the puddles!

And there was Granny
Swinging on the outhouse door
without her nightie
'Coz she had pajamas on"

We sang on the school bus, between 1946 and 1954, a medley of A Man Without a Woman and Silver Dollar- a remarkable educational adjunct, I think, since I was able to learn unconsciously from the 7th and 8th graders, as a first grader and onward, the songs, harmony singing and even improv!- but the relationship to the thread is that Grandma swung on that outhouse door as the tag to Silver Dollar.
...The way a silver dollar goes from hand to hand
So a woman goes from man to man,
And there was Grandma...
I remember hearing it tagged to other songs as a young teenager, but I don't temember what.

I remember this rhyme, although we did it slightly differently in the 70's. There was a beginning to it (lord knows if I can remember it) but the grandma part went like this:

"...And there was grandma, swinging on the outhouse door
without her nightie, waiting for the garbage man, who was a playboy,
to take her to the playboy club to be a bunny, baby can you ask for more..2 dollars please"

Well, my version seems particularly odd and obviously incorrect, but this is how we sang it as kids in the early 1960s:
    And there's Aunt Alice
Swingin' on the old back gate
    Without her nightie
    Waitin' for the garbage man.

Hmmmm.

That's the thing - it's a tag, not a song. It can be added to any number of songs, like the tags at the end of Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor:
    On the bedpost over...
Y'know that I love and I wanna hold you tight
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday night.

    On the bedpost over...
A dollar is a dollar and a dime is a dime.
I'd sing another chorus but I haven't got the time.

On the bedpost over - night.

On the school bus in the mid-70s we sang:
And there was (insert embarrassed female classmate's name here)
Swinging on the outhouse door
Without her nighty
Waiting for the garbage man
Whose name was (insert embarrassed male classmate's name here).

It was an effective way to torture the dorkier and less popular kids, as well as pick on each other. I was so dorky and unpopular I never got mentioned!

Our version was always a tag to "Mrs. Bliss":

Oh Mrs. Bliss,
went out to pi....ck some flowers,
and in the grass, she wet her a.....nkles to her knees.
And in the coop, she let a po....or old chicken die,
and in the cart, she let a far....mer pass her by.

Or as a tag to:

Just a boy and a girl, in a little canoe,
and the moon was shining all around.
Well they talked and they talked 'til the moon it went in,
and he said you better kiss me or get out and swim,
So you know what to do in a little canoe,
when the moon is shining all-a,
the moon is shining all-a,
the moon is shining all-around.
GET OUT AND SWIM!

What the heck, stay in and neck,
for an hour or two,

And there was Granny, swinging on the outhouse door,
without her nightie, waiting for the boy next door
who was a playboy, eating creamy caramels from Kraft.
And there was Grampa, swinging on the outhouse door,
without his jammies, waiting for the girl next door
(then sing slowly and campy)
who was a stripper,
eating those creamy, creamy, creamy,
Lord, oh those creamy, creamy, caramels from Kraft.

Anyway, I just couldn't resist putting my two cents in! lol

(I don't know the rest but it did have this line it) "a kiss and a squeeze, ten dollars please"

I might not have the right words, for all the lines but it went something like that, my best friend went to brownies and taught it to me 20 some odd years ago!

And there was Grandma,

Without her nightie,
And Grandpa yellin' "More, more, more!"
Until the hinge broke...
Now Grandma...

And then there's Grandma,
Swingin on the outhouse door:
She's in her nightie!
Swingin on the outhouse door:
She'll get a splinter!
Swingin on the outhouse door:
And then there's Grandpa,
Sayin more more more!

It might just be the version my generation has come up with but I find it rather amusing =)

In the 1960s in Massachusetts, we hooked it up with, "I Wanna Man",and it went like this: I wanna man, I wanna man, I wanna mansion in the sky. I wanna neck, I wanna neck, I wanna necktie for my guy. And when the dam, dam, dam, dam, damage is done, Home to mother I will run, with my child, with my child, with my childhood memories. And there was granny, swingin' on the outhouse door. Without her nighty. Waitin' for the garbage man. He had her nighty. Wrapped up in a cellophane bag.

Out behind the barn they didn't know that I was there.
The farmer he was bashful and the maiden she was shy
And when he asked her if he could, this was her reply

You can do it if you want to but you've got to do it right
You better not do it like you did the other night
Cause if you do well I'm a tellin' you
I'll never let you do it again

I mean the laundry

I'll never let you do it again

And there was granny
Swingin' on the outhouse door
Without a shirt on

The name of the song is Juvenile Delinquent. I called my sister, a former girl scout. Surprisingly she had a copy of the songs they used to sing at camp.

Juvenile Delinquent

Oh, I'm a juvenile delinquent
I roam the streets 'til two a.m.
I drink with all the sailors
And I smoke with all the bums
I wait on the corner 'til my pickup comes
Oh, I'm a juvenile delinquent
And I don't wanna go home
My mama hates me - I don't wanna go home
My daddy hates me - I don't wanna go home
And then there's grandma, swingin' on the outhouse door
She lost her nightie, swingin' on the outhouse door
Now here comes grandpa, swingin' on the outhouse door
He found her nightie, swingin' on the outhouse door
He really likes her, swingin' on the outhouse door

Ha Ha I fooled ya, swingin' on the outhouse door

I'm curious about the Kraft reference. I learned this in Girl Guide Camp in the mid '70's in Ontario, Canada. We sang,
"And there was granny,
Swinging on the outhouse door,
Without her nightie,
Waiting for the garbageman,
Who was a playboy,
Eating softee toffee from Kraaaaaaft."

The version I remember was from the 60's and it was a tag line to all those goofy songs we sang on the bus going to basketball games.

"And then there's Granny...
Swing in' on the outhouse door,
without her nightie...
We ain't going home no more!

I wish I could explain the tune itself. Goofy song tag, but fun to use and rather "naughty" back in those innocent days of seventh and eighth grades. This was also in Wisconsin by the way.
