17 Dec 00 - 05:27 PM (#358696) Subject: Duncan Chisholm From: Max Tone Had a couple of tune requests from non-feline friends today. Firstly -- Does anybody have a MIDI file of the tune "Hymn to the Saviour", or a copy of Duncan's first CD, on which he recorded it? Just spoke to Dunc, and he doesn't even have a copy himself! Secondly -- Anybody have the dots for a 6/8 pipe march "Duncan Chisholm, Chief Steward(t)", possibly by Jim Chisholm? Dunc had never heard of it. The first enquirer has the dots, but was taught by ear, whilst the second has a recording and was only taught to read! Have a Purrrrrrrrfect Crimble, 'Catters, Rob |

18 Dec 00 - 06:49 PM (#359376) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Duncan Chisholm From: John in Brisbane Found a reference to Duncan Chisholm's Back Yard, 2/4 March but no 6/8 tune. Re 'Humn To The Saviour', if your friend can scan the dots that he already has I'm sure that one of us here can create a MIDI for you. If that's OK you can send to johninbrisbane@hotbot.com Regards, John |

There are a lot of references there so make a pot of coffee before you start. Regards, John |
19 Dec 00 - 03:43 AM (#359653) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Duncan Chisholm From: Peter Kasin I have his first recording, The Wind On The Heath, which has Hymn To The Saviour. Is there a way I can get you the tune from the tape w/o infringing on his copywrite with the recording? If Duncan gives you the ok, I'll be glad to. I bought it in Dingwall at the Highland Music Festival back in '90. I was touring with a group of Scottish fiddlers from California. I'd be curious if he remembers us. -chanteyranger |

(sounds like Whisky, to me!) chanteyranger, Many thanks also for your offer, Dunc's unavailable, but seeing as he ain't got a copy himself, it's long deleted, and the record company probably no longer exists, I'd lay odds he'll want a copy, too! I take it you've got it on cassette, not CD? Any chance you could do a few copies of the whole tape? Mainly my fiddler mate (who hails from a minute west coast village in Scotland -- two of his nearest neighbours are Angus Grant, fiddler, repairer, tunesmith, teacher and father of "young" Angus, fiddler with "Shooglenifty", and Mike Anderson, who runs "Starfish", making all sizes of Clarsach and other small harps, as well as gorgeous electric Fiddles and 'Cellos. Lucky B*stard). But I'd love a copy too, plus Dunc, my daughters fiddle teacher, John in Brisbane?, and maybe a few spare.
Could swap you for a copy(ies)of "Redpoint", or other local CDs/tapes. I've just got Douglas Lawrence's first CD. He was taught by famous Doric fiddler Hector Macandrew, (98 of whose unpublished tunes have just come to light, 20 years after his death - book due soon) then studied classically, played in the Scottish National Orchestra, TAUGHT Yehudi Menuhin Hector's tunes for his Memorial concert, but has never recorded in 35 years playing! This man has a tortured soul pouring out of his bow.
