Then again, once I haven't posted to this thread, is there then an obligation for me to return to the previous 'don't post to this thread' threads and not post to them again? Or, by not posting to this thread, are my not-posts 'grandfathered' by association into the threads which I have not previously not posted to? There are also some interesting definitions for "post" -- I like the ones that are nouns the best, so if we reverse the statement and say "Don't thread to this post" we can get even more interesting combinations. It also allows us to use some of the verb definitions of "thread." Don't connect by running a string through an upright support for a fence. Don't machine a spiral into a military base. Don't proceed in a winding fashion to a guard station. Don't drop thick liquid from a spoon to put a letter in a mailbox. Well, the possiblities are endless, especially if you start using synonyms for "post" and "thread". CarolC, have you ever run "CarolC" through a spell checker? You get "caloric". It was a made-up word created by Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis, two Canadian comedians in Toronto. Dave Thomas was a veteran of the comedy cabaret called "Second City" that flourished in Toronto in the mid-to-late 70's, as I recall. Some of the greatest comedians of the late 20th century got their start at Second City doing stand up comedy for live audiences. These people were GOOD! A number of them then got an idea for a TV comedy whose main premise would be to mock television itself...thus was born the show "SCTV"...a 1 hour comedy show on the Global TV Network in Toronto, Canada. SCTV was supposedly a very small independent TV network of its own. Accordingly the show had a lot of little short skits (and some longer ones) that simulated a day's programming on a TV station. There were news reports, sports reports, soap operas, adventure shows, talk shows, interviews, and just plain totally weird stuff...most of it VERY funny. I think SCTV was the cleverest satirical show of all time, in fact. At any rate, one of the SCTV series of skits became hugely popular in the USA...that was "The Great White North" featuring the 2 moronic Canadian brothers Doug and Bob MacKenzie (fictional characters created by Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis). Moranis was not a veteran of Second City, but he became an important member of the SCTV crew, and has had a very successful career since, in any number of Hollywood movies. So...Doug and Bob MacKenzie...they were idiots who wore toques and cruddy old jackets and were supposedly typical of young Canadian men (the REALLY stupid ones, that is...). Their working vocabulary was limited to about 25 or so words and simple phrases. Their interests included beer, back bacon, beer, sitting around, beer, um...and beer mostly. Now, it is well known that Americans think stupidity is hilarious, and that most successful American comedy is based upon that. Accordingly, "The Great White North" became hugely popular south of the Canadian border, while the other SCTV stuff (which was very clever, satirical, and witty) did not. Doug and Bob then became hugely popular in Canada as well, which is what always happens. The USA sneezes, and Canada catches a cold. It made SCTV, while alienating most of its cast, who couldn't figure out why one of the least clever skits was getting all the attention. Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis were flabbergasted by the whole thing. All of a sudden it was like Beatlemania every time they showed themselves on the street. Believe me, I remember, it was nuts. Every teenage guy in Canada was going "Take off, you hoser!" "Beauty, eh?" and all the other stuff like that. This was in the early 80's. So..."hoser" was a made up word that NO ONE used before it appeared on SCTV. However, in its own realm of understanding "hoser" basically meant: a goof, a dummy, a moron, a dweeb, an idiot, a loser, etc... Got the idea? That's my long answer to your short question. - LH |

Born and raised in deepinahearta Illinois. I'm currently in the navy, 19-1/2 years and due to retire in July. I like the way people think in this forum! I think I can fit in pretty well here. I am not a nerd, but I was the class clown all thru school. I am a fan of Monty Python, The Marx Bros., Classic Movies, Folk Music, Old-time Radio, and antiques. My folks always thought I should have been born before them, the way I like all things old and antiquated. I'd like to see this Mudcat calendar myself. Will other photos of nude instruments be available? I'm not partial to acccordions, but a harmonica with all 10 holes exposed gets me hot. Thanks for making me feel welcome. Pete |

Except for me. I'm wearing ribbed stockings, a fedora hat and my accordion. You can buy it for the pictures of the instruments if you want. (Different strokes for different folks...) But I hope everyone will buy it. Max and the Mudcat could use the money to help keep this site going. Alison in Australia is currently the contact person for this project. On the personal page, scroll down to "messages". Click on "send a message". In the box provided, type in "alison". There will be a list of about three names, all variatons on alison. Click on the one that just says "alison". It should be the one at the top. Then just type in your message and send it. When you want to look at your personal messages, there are a couple of ways to do it. If there is a personal message waiting for you there will be a small banner just above the threads to tell you that you have x number of messages. Click on that. That will take you to your messages (or go through the same process that I described for sending a message). Your messages should be listed by member name and title. Click on the title to open. To respond, click on the member name. You might want to read the FAQ thread at the top of the list of threads for more information about how to function in the Mudcat. I'm going to send you a personal message just so you can try it out and see how it works. The calendar will actually be for 2001, but it will (true to Mudcat form), be a little quirky. It will probably start with February and end with January. My next post is going to have to be pretty funny, now, or people might get the wrong idea about me. Carol |

Verdi and Wagner delighted the crowds With their highly original sound. The pianos they played are still working, But they're both six feet underground. They're decomposing composers. There's less of them every year. You can say what you like to Debussy, But there's not much of him left to hear. |
