I am in the process of creating a website dedicated to various Irish and Scottish ballad singers and groups, such as Hamish Imlach, Alex Campbell, Iain Mackintosh, Hall & MacGregor, Matt McGinn and the Corries. I mentioned the Scottish performers because I have less information on them. You're clearly an expert on this subject and I would appreciated any help from you. In my recent travels of the Eastern United States, I had the privilege of hearing the "Old Sow Song" sung by both Bert AND Ewan. Now, Bert's version is in the database (click), and he even gave us cheat sheets so we'd be able to understand what he was singing (for what it was worth). What Ewan sang sounded completely different - but I couldn't tell whether this was due to a difference in the words, the accent, the grunts and whistles, or all of the above. So, Ewan, dear friend, in all humility, I ask if you could point us to the lyrics you used, or post them if they're different from what's here. While both Bert and Ewan did a wonderful job of the song, I have to say that Ewan's grunts and whistles were far more credible. -Joe Offer- |

I got it in manuscript from working on Volume 8 of the Greig Duncan Collection, due out some time this year. Whenever I can I'll put something on paper and post it - the tune varies quite a bit from what I think of as the English version - Suffolk or somewhere like that?
