You aren't the only one. The title of the book that we are looking for is: "Captain Jack and the Mermaid" published by Off Centaur Inc. Whoever gets it first, please share! Have been corresponding with Meg herself, and she doesn't even have a copy! So, i'm on the list for dots, too, please

Hi Gypsy, please ignore the last five (yes five) messages the 'puter just threw a wobbler. One of the joys/mysteries of modern technology, never let anyone tell you they don't have minds of their own. However here come the chords.

FIRST PART. IN KEY OF G

Captain Jack was a young man when he went to sea
G C G
Oh, me young ladies, go and kiss him goodbye.
G D7 G
He was barely a child of twenty and three
G C D7
Oh, tell him, young ladies, go and tell him from me,
G C G
He can marry the mermaid that lives in the sea.
C D7 G

SECOND PART. IN KEY OF AM

It was almost eight bells and Jack had the watch.
Am Em Am
He was finning and scaling the fish he had caught,
Am Em
When out of the sea there rose such a tune
Am Em Am
As he had not heard by the light of the moon.
Am G Em Am

THIRD PART. IN KEY OF A

Captain Jack was a young man when he went to sea.
A D A
Oh, me young ladies, go and kiss him goodbye.
A E7 A
He was barely a child of twenty and three.
A D E7
Oh, tell him, young ladies, go and tell him from me
A D A
He can marry the mermaid that lives in the sea.
D E7 A
Tell him, young ladies, go and tell him from me
A D A
He can marry the mermaid that lives in the sea.
D E7 A

Hope this all means something to you.
Best wishes and good singing.
The Grumps.

From: Stewart

This may be a long wait for the tune. But since I have just transcribed it from the Meg Davis CD, I thought I should post it. I recently discovered this beautiful song and the wonderful music of Meg Davis. I feel like I have discovered a hidden gem. Not only are her lyrics interesting and creative, but the music to which she sets them is wonderful, and her voice is beautiful. And she is a very gracious person who sent me a nice email thanking me for ordering her CD - "Capt. Jack and the Mermaid". It is a wonderful collection of her songs, recorded in the '70s and '80s and re-released on CD. I highly recommend it. Her web site is HERE.

The tune, in ABC format below, consists of one verse from part I (in Dmaj) and three verses from part II (in Em). The third verse of part II has a different tune from the other verses. Part III has the same tune as part I. If you have trouble with deciphering the ABC, I can email anyone the Noteworthy Composer file or the "dots" as a pdf file - just PM me.

With Meg's gracious permission, I recorded the song last year with my band Greenhouse. It's on our new CD "One Last Cold Kiss". Click here to check us out.

Cheers,
