Dylan fans, your opinion Please

I saw a used copy of Dylan's Boxset Biograph. I have a lot of the material already, but I see that it has a bunch of previously unreleased material. I can get it for $20 Canadian. Is it worth it?

Thanks in advance.

I would expect there to be some gems in there - It's Dylan! Got to be worth it surely.

Cheers,

Go for it, I'd say, unless it's just another re-packaging of Self Portrait...In which case, don't.

Its not and I wish I still had it. There are a couple there that aren't anywhere else.

Am I the only human that loved "Self-Portrait"?

I thought that it was a great satirical statement.

Biograph is really cool... For 20 bucks you can't go wrong.. "I'm In Love With The Ugliest Girl In The World" is worth that alone!

It's not a repackaged anything BTW

Steve, I'll back Clinton on this one. I can't remember what I paid for it from Columbia House, but it's well worth $20. There are some remakes of songs I've loved for years that I find a little annoying, but overall it's a fine set.

Biograph is absolutely GREAT!!! I still remember the thrill of buying it when it first came out. It's a wonderful mix of stuff from across the Dylan catalog, including old and new, and some really hard-to-get stuff too.

$20 Canadian??? Hell, it's worth $50 Canadian at least!

BUY IT!!!!!!!!!

khandu - I like Self-Portrait. There are some very neat cuts on it. "Days of '49" is a classic. So is "In Search of Little Sadie" (the long version). Bob's rendition of "Early Morning Rain" is very cool, one of my favourites of that song ever.

There are also some wretchedly bad cuts...like the Isle of Wight live performances...but on the whole it's a pretty interesting album.

Again, I thoroughly enjoyed it when it came out, and I still enjoy it.

Dylan is so classic that I like him even when he's having a seriously off day, anyway...

- LH

p.s. Spaw, I think I can get you a copy of Biograph in the box if you want one...but it will be more than $20 Canadian, I'm afraid...

It's worth it if it has "Can You PLEASE Crawl Out Your Window" on it. If I'm remembering correctly that was the B-side of the single - "Highway 61 Revisted". One of my favorite Dylan tunes.

.....and I have come to just love "Lay Down Your Weary Tune".....strong images and a hymn-like quality about it.

Yes indeed. A great spiritual song from the young Bob. Some detractors at the time called it "War and Peace" because it was so long (in their opinion).

Thanks for all the input. Here are the Dylan Cd's I already own.

Bob Dylan, Frewheelin', The Times They Are A Changin', Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde On Blonde, Blood On The Tracks, Desire, The Basement Tapes, Empire Burlesque, MTV Unplugged, Time Out of Mind. Greatest Hits Volume 2

I had planned to buy in the next while: Another Side of, Oh Mercy, The Bootleg Series 1-3, The Bootleg Series 4 (Live Royal Albert's Hall)

Given this collection would I be stuck with a CD that I already would have most of the material? I'm especially concerned that some of the stuff on Biograph may also be on the Bootleg series.

Steve, I am virtually 100% sure that much of the stuff on Biograph is on the Bootleg. yours, Peter T.

Actually, I am about 98% wrong (big surprise). Steve, as ever, check out Eyolf's page here! He has all the songs from Biograph listed, and the original albums from which they came, etc. The man is a marvel.

So I've decided to buy Biograph if it's still there.

Matt, I would recommend adding Bringing It All Back Home before Planet Waves.

But Planet Waves has my favorite Bob Dylan song that I've never heard on it! The Wedding Song!

I forgot to say thanks to all of you for your input.

Matt, Planet Waves also has Forever Young, one of my favourites.

But Bringing It All Back Home has Subterranean Homesick Blues, Maggie's Farm, Love Minus Zero/No Limit, Gates of Eden, It's Allright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), It's All Over Now Baby Blue and one of his funnier songs Bob Dylan's 115th Dream. I'd be happy if I went to a Dylan concert and he played nothing but songs from this album. I steered you right when I recommended Highway 61 Revisited didn't I?

Well I'm liberal to a degree, I think everybody should be free.......but in this case Matt, take Steve's advice and get "Bringing It All Back Home."

Oh, I really like the Subterranean Homesick Blues from the Bootlegs Vol.2, although I play it much faster. And actually I must say....Highway 61 Revisited is the least favorite Dylan album I have. I usually just play "Like A Rolling Stone", then shut it off.

Matt - I have to agree - "Bringing All Back Home" is a masterpiece. Essential listening. Check it out.

I'm with 'Spaw on this one. I think that every song on Highway 61 is outstanding, I think it's one of his most complete albums.

It was a friend of mine who introduced me to Dylan over 25 years ago. He was a huge fan. Recently he became engaged to a woman who is from a very religious family. At Sunday dinner they would all sit around and discuss the bible, something that he wasn't all that familiar with, but he endured it because he loved her. One night they started discussing the parable of Abraham and his son, at which point my buddy chirped in, "Hey, I know this one".

And I like the alternate take of "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, A Train To Cry" on Bootlegs Vol 2 as well.

Got it last night. I think I'm going to like it. The enclosed 63 page booklet is very informative. It has a lot of insight into Bob's influences, his songs and is way less cryptic than a lot of Dylan quotes that I've read.

I have only been able to listen to Disc 1 so far, but I'm enjoying the previously unreleased stuff. There is some stuff here that many artists woul be proud to have on any of their works, I think it just shows how strong a writer he is that these songs were left off earlier releases. I might get a friend of mine who has a CD burner put only the stuff I don't already have on to a single CD.

I'm also quite surprised by how much of the material is only available on this CD.

I guess the next purchase will be the Bootleg Series. I just can't stand the thought of spending $68.00 CDN on a CD collection. Maybe I'll find that used too.
