I wish I could get compliments like "You're not a musicians asshole". The only similar response I get is I am an arsehole of a musician....

Still, can't expect someone who shouts all the time to get the phraseology (sp?) right I guess.

and no-one needs to give you a break harmoniclive (nice handle btw - realy!) - just take one!

Right on, harmoniclive! I don't think Bob "Boring" Bolton is worth a dump of dingo dung. So what if he actually knows something about folk music? What's the Mudcat about anyway - folk music or musician's assholes? You're right! Musician's assholes! That's how I see it too... the bottom up view!

If it were up to that crocodile's crotch, we would hardly be able to turn around in this flipping flat! We'd have to move the wrestling ring out of the living room! You know what that kangaroo's k__t did to me? He searched through stale smelly shelves of stinking Sydney bookstores looking for blinking boring books, wrapped them up ever so neatly with stamps stuck in the predictably proper places and popped them in the post to me. You know why? So that I could become just as bloody boring as him. Not bloody likely, mate. You know what we did. No sooner had they arrived here than we built a big bonfire in the back and, no faster than you can say "Bob's your bleeding boring uncle," those rancid writings reached the flames.

Hey, Bob "Boring" Bolton, get a life. How about taking up sky diving without a parachute?

...yeah, Boring Bob keeps popping into threads where topics related to Australia are being bandied about, and spoiling our fun by posting relevant, clear and useful information! We could spend WEEKS speculating randomly about some of this stuff if ol' Boring Bob didn't gum it up with timely facts and answers!.....

(and I know for a fact that he has clotted the mails with books to one other friend here in the states, who can barely restrain her indignity at having her music collection enhanced without the fun of spending $2000 on a ticket to OZ to do it herself!)

"Oh, my son, you have to have been on Mudcat a long time to get a set of tin like that".... "I got this from being flamed over 10 times by GUEST", "There I was, giving out facts and information about banjos, and all of a sudden, whhooosssh, a flamer hit me with WHAT HAS THIS TO DO WITH FOLK MUSIC?", "Oh, that one, that's the Bob Bolton long time service medal...."
D.M.O. Distinguished Mudcat Order

Gobshite is a lancashire expression used a lot by Lancashire people and it defies exact definition. It is derogatory , in general , but can be used amongst friends in a self deprecating way "oh..I have spilled my beer ...I say , what a gobshite I am" would be a common expression in a Lancashire pub.

Or if required it can be a good description of some one who talks a load of crap like " my goodness Guest Harmoniclive talks like a gobshite" .

A very useful word.

"shite" is a euphemistic spelling of "shit.

Nothing euphemistic about it, it's just an alternative version of the word. With the advantage that the long vowel gives it more expressive power.

In note that the fella concerned says "here" in that last post, with the implication that he is in Australia. Strange.

So far we've ascertained that harmoniclive is bored by descriptions of the bottle-cap-covered sticks used as rhythm instruments and he resents Bob's knowledge (and willingness to share same) of music in general and Aussie music in particular.

I think what we need to do next is start threads about washboards, spoons, jugs, gut-bucket basses and any other "folk" instruments and zero in a little closer on what it is that harmoniclive fines offensive.

Then we should encourage harmoniclive to go out and acquire one of each of these instruments, turn thems sideways and STUFF 'EM UP HIS MUSICAL ARSEHOLE.

Then we can serve the beer and get back to enjoying the music and friends.

cheers,

G'day All,

Susan / WYSIWYG, All the portable, makeshifts that kept Australians playing music on the other side of the earth from friends, family and tradition are a special interest to me. Bones, spoons, local native clapper sticks, empty kerosene drums, bits of wood tied to a tea chest ... and bottle tops loosely nailed on a broomstick ... and anything else that lets people participate instead of just sitting around listening is fair game in understanding our larrikin traditions. A related major interest is the free reed group - mouth organ, concertina and accordion - all contributing to the local musical accent.

I look at Mudcat because it gives me an extra perspective beyond my Australian one. It helps me a lot, particularly when I wonder about what to put in the next issue of Mulga Wire or Singabout, to know what interests such a diverse bunch of keen musicians. If I help some of them in return - Bloody Good Thing!

BTW: Our GUEST harmoniclive paid us a visit last Easter when one of our Ozcats enquired about others attending the St Albans Festival. You can check out here: St Albans pleasantries if I have my "blue clicky thing" working.

Regards,

Bob Bolton

So I think of tying a batch of bells on their feet.... and pass around the homemade rhythm insturments. Pot lids, anything to get the noise underway. If it's homemade, they don't think they have to do it "right" and they just play. We say we PLAY music-- so sheeshe!! Playful, yeah!

I have a pair of ashwood claves that bounce themselves so hard I hardly have to play, just control them... I hand those to some people and the rainstick to others, and we're off.

Also our group never gives concerts-- we lead singalongs. My husband and I can hardly stand to attend concerts ourselves anymore-- it seems so unnatural that some people are singing and some watching. So--- long way around saying, GOOD ONYA. Come on over anytime.

~Susan

Hello everyone,

Bob Bolton contributed a lot of valuable information to this forum (that includes providing me with the lyrics, chords etc. for a song a friend of mine has been looking for fifteen years).

I do not remember any comparable message by harmonyclive.

So Bob Bolton, keep on!

And I suggest that harmoniclive changes his alias in "disharmonyclive"

All the best

"shite" is not a word in common use in Oz. We only hear it from Brit. immigrants. (John Gray)

You wouldn't be using the term Brit in some novel way that includes Irish would you? That's not too advisable...

Having just read the St Albans thread mentioned by Bob I must apologise to harmoniclive for suggesting he needs to take a break. As such an obviously accomplished professional musician he cannot take a break from the constant round of well paid folk gigs he gets.

Which is why he is so well known on the international folk scene. I am sure he must be as good as the Bogles, Garbutts, Hutchins, Priors and Prines of this world. He is just being denied a wage by all us uneducated folkies.

C'mon, Bob and everyone else doing this stuff for free, give the guy a break. You are taking the bread out of his mouth and stopping everyone with real talent making a living.

And dischordanticlive..........just in case that "picked before it was ripe" pea you use for a feckin' brain isn't bright enough to get it, I would like to point out a fact that you should realize. YOU ARE GETTING A WELL DESERVED ASS WHUPPING IN THIS THREAD.

Come on back when you have had time to ripen. Maybe then you will realize that it is not a sin here to disagree and argue whatever point you choose. But it is a cardinal sin to flame others just because you don't like them or disagree with them. Debate is a value in this forum. Flaming just shows you for the worthless piece of cosmic dung that you are.

Oh, and by the way, another value here is forgiveness. All you have to do to receive it is to start contributing in a POSITIVE, or contributing way. You will find 'Catters to be wonderfully welcoming. Make your choice.

Hmmm...The Knowitalls sure beat the Idiots for informative reading, that's for certain. Nonetheless, how can we really tell if someone is a knowitall if all we see is that which is posted here, and why would someone weigh in with deliberate stupidity (that is, when it's not intended a humour)? I got major personal flames only really once, based on my contributions to a guitar tips thread, and I never thought I was imposing enough to be that threatening to folks.

I'm tempted to suggest that harmoniclive find therapy elsewhere than here, but I'm not knowitall enough to make that judgement. Besides, isn't Mudcatville good therapy itself?

Bring on the knowitalls, I learn from them!

Damn, I do get pissed off here by so many of who do not know of what they speak. I have made a good a shockingly knowledgable friend in Mr. Bob Bolton --- all through Mudcat. I feel priviledged to have his important input---here and in private --- musically and otherwise. I save most of the information and communications he has so generously sent to me.

I have drifted away from The Cat a bit in the last few months, but each time I have a look the same old problems are there. If you follow Bob Boltons link to the St Albans thread you will soon see what a dickhead this harmoniclive really is. He establishes that fact with his own postings. This is one of his posting from that thread:

"i would rather drown in negativity, than drown in puerile bullshit! what kind of drugs are you on spider?prozac?.in case you hadn,t noticed its a sad lonesome cold world, and trying to insult someone from the anonimity of the net doesnt help one bit.i think you had better crawl back under your rock before you get crushed by a boot heel."

Seems to me he is doing to Bob Bolton what he is protesting about in his above posting.

This effort by harmoniclive makes you wish (dare I say it) the old Gargolye was still around, he was a pro. He might have upset a lot of people but at least he knew what he was talking about most of the time in relation to music and he sure was great reading. Harmoniclive old boy you pale to insignificance in the shadow of Gargoyle.

Regards Grubby

Just skimmed through that St Albans thread. You get them everywhere don't you? Not that many though, fortunately.

But there was one quote from one of harmony's cronies that I loved: I was in a line to purchase food at the St Albans festival about 8 years ago and this woman turned to me in the line and asked why there was all these strange people around.

That sums us up pretty well, thank God.

What I can never understand is how you get people who think that, just because you like one type of music, that means you are somehow stopping them playing whatever kind of music they like to play.

G'day ALL,

WYSIWYG: Will I be accused of thread creep in thread flaming me, if I get back to you comments of a few hours - and 37 or so posts - back?

" Bob, I get real tired of people telling me they are not musical and can't do a thing about it. "No musical bone in my body!!"

Some of the really musical people in this world are those that work at drawing people into music - not hiving off as something they make money from and that they try to keep for themselves. Just an example: I got into conversation with a bloke who was looking at instruments in the window of the local "Accordions 'n' Folk" shop. It turned out he wasn't after an instrument but ... he was on his way to his daughter's house, round the corner, where they had weekly family gatherings where everybody or sang played - even if it was just to shake the coffee tin ΒΌ-filled with rice that they were handed.

He obviously came up through the hard school of rhythm as the basic music. He told me how, when he was a lad at reform school, the kids used to purloin the wooden slats from the pull-down window covers of the old railway carriages and, by using the heat of candle to bend and harden them, turn each slat into a pair of wooden playing 'bones'. I can't exactly condone the theft, but it shows how basic a need rhythm is.

One of the things I like to do is to get school kids - brought up in a society where everything has become a pay-for service - to join in with music (recorded - or played by whoever is there) by playing natural rhythm instruments ... clappers, rattlers (simple or complex like lagerphones), 'bones', &c. I sometimes think of this as "Bush Orff", since if pinches a fair bit from Carl Orff's Schulewerk methods.

I always keep in mind a song written by a local songwriter (maybe a good one to post to Mudcat - after I check with him) that starts;
"Now you have to be a superstar, if you want to sing along,
If they catch you quietly singing - people think there's something wrong ..."

Keep it up!

Regards,

Bob Bolton

Heya Bob, OWN UP!!!

You were doing that "harmoniclive" entry by yourself, because you felt a little desperate alone with your sheep and kangaroos and rabbit disease, so you decided to provoke them "right side of the world" inhabitants into uttering some nice words about you! Isn't it so?

How I got you? Never write the first statement in CAPITALS. It was a little bit too much gunpowder. Only gibbering madmen speak in capitals. And death. But gibbering madmen couldn't say "up pops boring bob bolton" without stuttering. And death would just have stated "BOB BOLTON? - FOLLOW ME, PLEASE."

By the way... Harmoniclive made an interesting point. What IS the difference between shit and clay?

My dear Mr. Bolton,

It was with great pleasure that I reviewed your kind and helpful exposition regarding the necessity of rhythm in the realm of human expression. Your kind attention to my remarks indicates that you are indeed a gentleman of the first order.

Might I suggest, sir, that should your travels bring you Stateside, or should mine take me Down Under, that perhaps we might engage in a bit of musicification with our respective instruments, ignoring of course any feeble protests from those round about who may not be so gifted as to properly appreciate the fine cultural contribution made by people pounding away on the instruments in question heretofore thoroughly described and amply lauded?
