This may be the same as "Over the mountain, over the sea"

Cho:
Over the mountain, over the sea,
Back where my heart is longing to be
Please let the light that shines on me
Shine on the one I love.

I see the moon, the moon sees me
Down through the leaves of the old oak tree
Please let the light that shines on me
Shine on the one I love.

Cho...

I hear the lark, the lark hears me,
Singing a song with a melody
Please let the [lark that sings for me]?
[Sing for]? the one I love

Cho.

I kiss a rose, the rose kisses me,
Fragrant as only a rose can be
Please let the Rose that [comforts me
Comfort]? the one I love.

God bless the somebody I'd like to see

See thread 15710: I See the Moon for more of this old Mother Goose rhyme. A post there says it has been traced back to the late 18th c. Some of the verses, of course, are newer (W&M, S. Glover- Victorian; and others).

I see the moon and the moon sees me.
The moon sees the one I long to see,
So God bless the moon and God bless me,
And God bless the one I long to see.

I once had a love so strong so true,
But she left me to go to you,
So take good care as I have done,
'Cause you have two and I have none.

CHORUS

My mum died in New Zealand, I am in the uk, and couldn't make it to her funeral, and now cannot make the journey to visit her grave. Still miss her lots!!

This song came into my life not long after her death and I have spent a long time tracking it down, so its wonderful to have what appears to be the full lyrics.

To all concerned a great big thankyou!!!

My mom song this song to me but the 3rd verse I thought up. Here is how the song goes.

I see the moon the moon sees me.
The moon sees someone that I like to see.
God bless the moon and god bless me,
For you are the one I love.

I had a heart and it was true.
Take care of it from me to you.
Take care of it like I would have done,
For you are the one I love.

Late at night it shines so bright
It turns into my vivid night-light.
It shines in like a candle's light
And guides me to the sun.

I see the moon the moon sees me.
The moon sees someone that I like to see.
God bless the moon and god bless me,
For you are the one I love,
For you are the one I love!

I remember my mother singing this to me when I was young. I now sing this song to my daughter every night when she goes to sleep.

I see the moon and the moon sees me.
The moon sees somebody I'd like to see.
God bless the moon and God bless me.
Shine on the one I love.

Over the mountains over the seas.
Back where my heart is yearning to be.
God bless the moon and God bless me.
Shine on the one I love.

Then you can repeat it once or twice. This song knocks her right out.

I love the lyrics of this song- I vaguely remember my mom singing it to me when I was little. Does anyone have the tune for this song, in midi or something? I can't quite remember how it goes...

Thanks all for the real words; my Dad used to sing;
I see the moon, the moon sees me
Eating chips up a rhubarb tree

which I always knew must be wrong; but he never lets not knowing the words stop him from singing a good song.

Cyparissa- use the link to thread 15710 given above by Q, and at the head of that thread, you will find a link to the Mudcat Midi.

(A rather painful imitation horn(?) midi; the tune is OK, but draggy)

The original 18th c. verse is
I see the moon,
And the moon sees me;
God bless the moon,
And God bless me.
All the others are later additions.

I found that Dickie Valentine recorded this song in 1954 and it was on the charts at #1 for 6 weeks.
The midi tune is correct. I'd love to have a recording of the complete version. My Mom used to sing it to us.

Thanks for the memories - yes, my dad used to sing this song to me too. Not only that but memories of Dickie Valentine performing it back in the home town of Scarborough when I was a very young girl and he did a summer season at my unole's theatre. How the years roll back!

The way I learned this song. .

I see the moon and the moon see's me
the moon see's somebody I'd like to see.
God bless the moon and god bless me,
and God bless the somebody I'd like to see.

1)I really think that the Lord above,
created you for me to Love,
and picked you out from all the rest,
because he knew that I'd Love you the best. .

2) If I get to heaven before your there,
I'll write your name on the Golden Stair,
I'll write it so plain that the angels will see,
just how much you mean to me. . .

My Grandmother use to sing this to me when I got lonely for my Mom. .

I see the moon and the moon sees me,
the moon sees somebody I'd like to see,
God bless the moon and God bless me,
and God bless the somebody I'd like to see.

Seems to me that God above,
created you for me to love,
picked you out from all the rest,
cause he knew I loved you best.

I had a heart that was kind and true,
and now it's gone from me to you,
treat it well as I have done,
for you have two and I have none.

And the moon sees the one that I long to see.
So God bless the moon and God bless me,

It seems to me that God above
Created you for me to love.
I once had a heart called mine, you see,
But now it has gone to you from me.

So take good care
as I have done,
For you have two
And I have none.

I see the moon and the moon sees me
And the moon sees the one that I long to see.
So God bless the moon and God bless me,

Oklahoma, 1950s, we sang

I see the moon, the moon sees me,
Down through the limbs of the old oak tree;
Please let the light that shines on me
Shine on the one I love.
Over the mountains and over the sea,
Back where my heart is longing to be,
Please let the moon that shines on me
Shine on the one I love.

I also heard 'Lord let the light...'

After I posted that, in the shower, I recalled we sang another verse:

I hear the lark, the lark hears me,
(la, la-la-la, la, la) melody,
Please let the lark that sings to me,
Sing to the one I love.

'down through the limbs of the old oak tree' would fit too and it might have been sung that way; the 'melody' could be in my mind from childhood attempts to 'improve' the lyric; I tried that sometimes.
The 'rose' verse seems to match this pattern, too, and sounds almost familiar, though I do not recall actually singing it. After I thought about the lark I was trying to recall if there were any others; verses for 'smell' or 'taste' did not seem to make sense, but it seemed as if there should be three, and some sort of 'feel' (a breeze?) was in my mind, but really do not remember such.

I kiss a rose and the rose kisses me
as fragnant as only a rose can be
God bless the rose that comforts me
comfort the One that I long to see

So God bless the moon

Dad used to sing this to me when I was little but I'm positive there was a line that went:
"Everybody shouts with glee"
maybe it was just a made up line to rhyme?
Cause I've searched these threads and I can't see any version with this line...
