Pass out the cigars

I haven't been around lately, been busy, we just had a baby girl, "Hazel". She loves the banjo already, one week old. I sing to her too, need to round up some good kids songs. I've never been given so much conflicting advice from so many people until now, it can get frustrating sometimes. Any other new mudcat babies out there? Eric

Eric, I have two girls (9 & 11) and they are the best!!!! When the youngest was born I heard a song by Dennis O'Rourke called "When you Grow Up". The first time I heard it I had to hide a tear or two. Now I sing it myself..... the chorus goes...

When you grow up, you're gonna break hearts
It's a matter of time, and I can read all the signs
when you grow up, you're gonna break hearts little girl
Cause you're so pretty, you're already breakin mine......

Congratulations!!!!!!! Frank

Congratulations! Don't overlook Don McLean's "Wonderful Baby." (I think it's on the Homeless Brother album? Maybe Tapestry.)

Marvelous news! My kids always liked hearing the Skye Boat Song, it ain't a lullaby but its a nice tune. Sing Hazel anything you want, she'll love the sound of YOUR voice singing to HER.

LG, tread lightly with WesleyS if you contact him for mutual congratulations, see prior threads on Twins.

But for new babies, ooh la la, I sang a lot of The Castle of Dromore (my kids call it hush-a-bye Lu), Peter Paul and Mary's version of Hushabye, Tom Lehrer's the MLF Lullaby, and of course Hush Little Baby. They like any familiar song, though, sometimes just what was in the car earlier, even if it's in French, which they don't speak, yet...And of course, a BIG congrats to you and Mom and baby Hazel, what a lovely name! Hope it matches her eyes...

Congratulations.

But remember the old song "When you are the father of boys, you worry. When you are the father of girls, you do more than that, you pray!"

My girls (!) are 25 and 24, and I've now reached the "Sunrise, Sunset" (from Fiddler on the Roof) stage.

Why do they have to grow?

Congratulations! I trust that all three of you are in good health. Sing whatever *you* likeadjusting the tempo depending on whether it's a lullaby or a baby-bouncing tune at the moment. I was lulled on a variety that ranged from drinking songs to opera, myself. If this is your first child, keep in mind that a baby picks up vocabulary before she speaks. My father tells me that my first sentance was,"That's a damn fine cat!"

Congrats to you from the sleepless branch of the Mudcat. My son Brendan is 7 weeks old today so I know what you're going through. If your daughter is half as good looking as my son is they'll be breaking hearts and having blues songs written about them both for years to come. What my wife and I have done is split up the late night feedings. I get 1:00 AM and she gets 5:00 AM. Someone here at the Mudcat suggested that we treat our new little one as if they were a visitor from another planet and it's up to us to teach them the customs and language of this world. Good advise. Brendan seems to like the Segovia CD's we play for him. And don't worry that you don't know a lot of childrens songs now because Hazel doesn't know what the words mean yet. Just sing the songs you already know a little softer and slower. "Goodnight Irene" has a good melody but the lyrics are not what I plan to sing for my son. You'll have time to work on more songs later. It's a wonderful world LG - and we're the lucky SOB's that get to show it to a new generation. I'm looking forward to parenthood as a great new adventure and a learning experience too. Best of luck to you and the whole family. Wesley

By the way LG - you forgot a few details - weight, length, condition of Mom, ect. I assume she's at home already.

I also think that soon we'll have to start a thread called "Shameless Parental Brags" so that we won't have to bore the others with how brilliant and wonderful our children are.

Hi Wesley, 7 lbs, 11 oz. 20" long. Moms doing fine.

I learned a excellent 'froggie went a courtin' type song today called "King Kong Kitchie Kitchie Ki Mi O" from the Harry Smith "American Folk Music" records.

About the banjo being child abuse: my wife thought it was funny that I played banjo for over 15 min's and hazel didn't cry. That's more than I can say for your typical bar crowd.

Someone gave me a tape when my last daughter was born (4 girls in all). The tape was of fathers singing the songs they sing to their kids at bedtime. James Taylor, etc. I'll see if I can find it to provide more details.

Dwitty, Is the tape you're looking for called "Daddies Sing Goodnight"? It's a great cd of lullabies sung by (famous) fathers. Very mellow and some wonderful songs on it.

Just as long as we get regular reports - when the burp-smiles change to real smiles, when the gurgles turn to Ma-ma and Da-Da (or if they are musically inclined DADGA!), etc, etc.

Daddies sing Godnight is on the Sugarhill label. Lots of good bluegrass folks on it. Tim o'Brien, Peter Rowan, Doc Watson ect.

Congratulations!! Hazel is such a pretty name. My younger brother and his wife just had a girl, too. ABIGAIL ROSE. All the best to you and yours.

My guys are all getting a little older (8, 12 & 16) and I only have one piece of advice: regardless of how you work out the other "details", make sure you let her know that she is loved and she'll be OK. If you're there for her now, when she needs you, she'll feel a lot more secure in the world as she gets older. And enjoy every minute - they grow up much too fast.

Congrats again
Bart

Lonesome Gillette- Many Congrats, I've always been partial to baby girls, having fathered three of them. My youngest is now almost five. If this is your first child, then all the forwarning and advice you've received, including mine, are not able to prepare you for the huge challenges and many pure joys that lay ahead. If you have other kids then you already understand.

I applaud your use of the banjo, or any other form of live music. Keep it up. Kids love music. Play recorded music as well. Maybe you'll find a performer that Hazel loves. In our case, Kate Wolf struck a nerve, and consoled my grandson, Devon, when nothing else would. It was amazing. Whenever Devon was inconsolable, (food, diapers, holding etc.), Kate Wolf's voice did the trick. Every single time. So play your music, experiment. Maybe you'll hit on the right combination as we did.

Damn. Little girls are so great. I'd have another if we could, (though my wife might have a different opinion). My hat is off to you, sir. BlueJay

Congratulations to you, your partner and all the best to baby Hazel. As the proud father of 5, I can assure you that the best thing to play when they are crying is Ace of Spades by Motorhead with the volume cranked up full - it's the only thing that can compete...;-)

Good Luck

Hey Dave the Gnome, The first recorded music Hazel heard wasn't Motorhead, it was the Sex Pistols. Hehe. A few days after we got home from the hospital my wife went out to the video store and came home with this new documentary about the Sex Pistols that we watched with Hazel in tow. The movie is not that great but brought back some memories.

Hazel likes to listen to Hazel Dickens (and so do I) but I'd like to avoid too much recorded music, I think we are heaped with way too much music and stuff, not enough quiet especially if you live in the city. (ok. I feel myself climbing up on a stump, I'll get down now and save it for the FLAME thread)

Sex Pistols would definitely be my second choice, LG - Watch what you do with those cigars if you go near that flame thread tho'...;-)

Congradulations Eric ~ think I'll pass on the cigar.

If you are planning on lullabies for Hazel you might want to consider a mute for the banjo. You can get some nice mellow sounds that way.

A friend about to have a baby toled me his theory ~~ "The baby is coming into my world I'm not going into his" implying that the baby would have to adjust to his life style. I think he followed this line of thinking for about the first hour.
