Whaddy'a mean, Sorch - not exactly folk? JOY TO THE WORLD (2) written by Hoyt Axton is in the DT database AND its on our Missing Tune List, so it must be folk! **BG**

Snort. It's too early here for me to think properly, snuff. Still on 1st cup coffee. Which do you prefer?

Never occured to me it might be in the DT. I found chords here. Does that help redeem me? No melody or MIDI, tho.

OK, OK, I might be able to make a midi from memory, just didn't realize this one was on the list. I'm still struggling with The Ballad of St. Anne's Reel (by ear). See, MMario, we're working.

Our choir director used to do a religious version of Axton's "Joy to the World" in our Catholic parish. The one time the choir did the song when I was there, I went and sat with the congregation and didn't sing. I threatened to walk out if he did it again - and for once, he actually respected my sensitivities. He claims Axton himself wrote the religious lyrics and that it starts out:

Jeremiah was a prophet,
Moses was a prophet too...

I've heard beyond those two lines only once, because those two lines were enough to start me screaming in protest. Just to satisfy my curiosity, does anybody know the rest of it, and if Axton really wrote the "religious" version? Am I right in thinking this is truly tacky, or should I be more open-minded?

If you're still curious, the answer is YES - Hoyt Axton DID write a "religious" version of JOY TO THE WORLD (before he wrote it for Three Dog Night I think), which is found in some old 70s Christmas books...

Jeremiah was a prophet
Moses was a prophet too
Jesus was the Son of God & man
His love shines down on you....

Joy to the world
All the boys & girls now
Joy to the children of Galilee
Joy to you & me

The reason to be a Christian
Is just as plain as day
The sermon on the mountain
Was made to show the way...

When you're lost out on life's highway
& you have no place to hide
The keys are in the Kingdom
& we're all welcome inside...

but it wasn't Christmasy enough, so I rewrote the 1st & 2nd verses & kept the 3rd...
