Lyr/Chords Req: Miss the Mississippi and You

This I believe was an old Jimmie Rodgers song. Lots of people have done it, Merle Haggard did it on an albun tribute to Jimmie Rodgers. Jim

Don't know the chords; here are most of the lyrics:

I'm gettin tired of the big city life
tired of the glamour tired of the sights
in all my dreams I am roaming once more
down by the banks of my old river shore

I am sad and weary, longing to go home
How I miss the Mississippi and you, dear
Things look sad and gloomy everywhere I roam
And I miss the Mississippi and you.

Mockingbirds are singing 'round my cabin door
How they miss the Mississippi and you
Nothing seems to cheer me under heaven's dome
I miss the Mississippi and you

Roaming this wide world over
Always alone and blue, so blue

I'm longing for my homeland, my muddy water shore
I miss the Mississippi and you...

My S.O does this one, he's busy right now ( in the kitchen, where he belongs )but I'll ask him once he's through burning the dinner.

You folks were kind enough to get me the words to this old Jimmie Rodgers song, but I really do need the chords too. Help.

JEEPSTER. I WAS HOPING SOMEONE WOULD COME UP WITH THEM FOR YOU. I SEARCHED THE WEB TO NO AVAIL. BUT I HAVE THE ROBIN AND LINDA WILLIAMS RECORDING AT HOME. I SKETCHED AN ARRANGEMENT OF IT ONCE FOR THE GUITAR BUT NEVER PLAYED IT SO I'VE FORGOTTEN IT. SORT OF A TIN PAN ALLEY TUNE TYPICAL OF 1935 OR SO. A COUPLE OF PASSING CHORDS AS I REMEMBER, A DIMINISHED (AUGMENTED?) AND AN ODD MINOR (FROM A FOLKIE POINT OF VIEW), BUT I'LL GIVE IT A LISTEN IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS AND TRY TO GET THEM TO YOU. I'M PACKING TO MOVE SO I COULD BE DELAYED. REFRESH THIS THREAD TO REMIND ME.

REGARDS FORTUNATO

This is one of Jimmie Rodgers old songs and I love it. It was also recorded by Merle Haggerd on his"Same Train Different Track??" album.

I really would like to have the chords to this

Jeepers, do you already have the words? And what key do you want to do it in?

OK, don't answer me. *G*

I have this on a Doc Watson LP I think, but the turntable motor is bad. I ain't hooking it up and digging up the LP unless you can't get the lyrics!

Miss The Mississippi And You
Bill Halley

(Eb)I'm growing (C7)tired of the (Fm)big city's lights,
Tired of the (Bb7)glamour and (Eb)tired of (Ab)the (Eb)sights
(Ab) In all my (Eb)dreams (D)I (Db)am (C7)roaming once (Fm) more,
(F7) Back to my home on the (Bb7) old river shore.

(Eb) I am sad and (Eb7) weary
(Ab) Far away from (Abm6) home,
(Eb) Miss the Missis - ((Bb7)sippi and (Eb) you (Bb7) dear
(Eb) Days are dark and (Eb7) dreary
(Ab) Everywhere I roam
(Eb) Miss the Missis- ((Bb7)sippi and (Eb) you (Eb7)
(Ab) Rolling the wide world (Eb) over
(Cm) Always a - ((F7) lone and ((Bb7) blue, so blue;
(Eb) Nothing seems to (Eb7) cheer me,
(Ab) Under heaven's (Abm)dome,
(Eb) Miss the Missis- ((Bb7)sippi and (Eb) you.

Memories are bringing happy days of yore,
Miss the Mississippi and you, dear;
Mocking birds are singing round your cabin door,
Miss the Mississippi and you.
Rolling the wide world over
Always alone and blue, so blue;
Longing for my homeland,
Muddy water's shore,
Miss the Mississippi and you.

Jimmie Rodgers did pick songs that took twists and turns, but they were good songs and have a lasting quality. This is a prime example.

WYSIWYG. Arkie has sent the chords but I prefer to pick in D or E. Can you do it in one of these.

Thanks to both of you. Jman

Thanks for this. I've loved this song ever since I heard on a Hotmud Family record lo these many years ago. What fun to sit at my computer and finally be able to sing it for myself.

Jeepman, I am having some vision problems, so I may have misread my transpose chart, but try these:

In D,
Eb = D
C7 = B7
Fm = Em
Bb7 = A7
Ab = G
D = Db
F7 = E7
Abm6 = Gm6
Eb7 = D7
Cm = Bm

In E,
Eb = E
C7 = Db7
Fm = Gbm
Bb7 = B7
Ab = A
D = Eb
F7 = Gb7
Abm6 = Am6
Eb7 = E7
Cm = Dbm

But look-- it gets very simple in G:
Eb = G
C7 = E7
Fm = Am
Bb7 = D7
Ab = C
D = F
F7 = A7
Abm6 = Bm6
Eb7 = G7
Cm = Em

Hope those are right. YMMV!

Love to hear you play it, jeepman!

~Susan

JM,

If yer ever in north central PA or south central NY, PM me and Hardiman. I can do that one on the autoharp in G, and we'll let Hardi fiddle!

Peter, as long as you are at it, would you double check my transpose job? And let me know here if I steered jeepman wrong?
