Fred McDowell Fans?

Are there any Missippi Fred McDwoell fans out there? I'm looking for some one that may have had a lesson or two from the man himself. If not, any one who may have seen him play live . . children, aunts, uncles old neighbors, etc.

No, I never saw him live. There's a preety good set of videos available from Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop. In particular, Legends of the Bottleneck Blues Guitar features McDowell along with Jesse Fuller, Furry Lewis, and Mance Lipscomb. McDowell performs: Louise, Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning, I Heard Somebody Call, Break 'Em on Down, and My Babe. The phone number for the wrokshop is 201-729-5544. Good Luck.

Thanks dw.. I'll look into the video. My ideal is to find somebody at a blues festival somewhere that saw him, played with him, etc.. I've gotten some good stuff from taping PBS. Videos and CDs are good stand ins until I get connected.

I've been a great fan since I picked up a second hand copy of the "I do not play no rock 'n' roll" LP just about the time the great man died so never saw him live. Don't play myself so can't help with tips.

Never saw him and never had any lessons off him but he and Son House are my two favorite bluesmen... Everyone else falls somewhere beneath those two in my admiration...

(BTW, if you haven't done so allready, you can go to CD Baby (Sidewalk Bob) and hear a little of my version of Fred's "61 Highway"...)

Nevermind... Now back to the Mississippi Fred McDowell...
