I haven't seen Little Neophyte around the cafe for a while. Have I just missed her postings? I miss her point of view and her observations. I hope she is well. Are you out there Little Neo.

She told me she would be out of town a lot this month. It is nicer when she's here, though, isn't it?

Definition:

Banjophyte (n.): a tiny micro-organism that lodges between the string and fret of the ordinary 5-stringed banjo and prevents notes from being played cleanly. Although too small to see, they have extraordinarily hard carapace, and the only known technique for removing them is to repeatedly strike the desired note over and over again (preferably in a sound-proof practice chamber) until the 'phyte is crushed to powder and the note can be played cleanly repeatedly.

She is fine. I came home from a gig last night and had a phone message from her. I am headed off shortly to another, but I intend to give her a call back. I think she may be headed this way and we are going to give her a place to hide out for a few days. I want to see if she really leaves a hundred dollar bill under the plate..............hahahahahaha.

All the best,

Mick

Yeah, I've heard from her, too and she's really looking forward to some fun times pickin' and visitin'.

Amos, that is NOT our Bonaphyte! Our Bonaphyte has no problem with clean, clear tones and some at a pretty fast clip, too! Growing by leaps and bounds as a picker and proud of her, I am!

Kat: For cry-eye! I wasn't characterizing Bonnie, whom I know and love (cyberwise) dearly. I was sharing a discoverywhich explains to all less accomplished banjoers why they have problems with clear notes and what to do about it. The discovery of the banjophyte, the notorious microscopic insect described above, has Nothing To Do Whatsoever with our accomplished Banjo - picking friend. Except a sort of chronological synchronicity. Purely coincidental.

Soon I will be heading off to a Banjo Nerd convention being held near where Big Mick lives. Getting together with him & his family are on my agenda. Can't leave Michigan without a Big Mick hug, thats for sure!

Willie-O, I miss you. I am a sick man. When are you going to get yer arse out of them friggin' woods and get down here????? Guess I will have to come over there and get you and the gang and take you back to a civilized wilderness............... Call Tony and tell him to pack his bags..............Can I carry the Lowden??? Come to think about it, you stay in the woods and me and the Lowden will visit Michigan.

Left Bonnie about an hour ago. We had a wonderful time. I picked her up after work. Spent about a week and a half in Elderly today while she played every damn banjo in the joint.........then the lady went through every damn old timey CD in the place. If you have ever seen their selection you know that took some time. I was about to pass out from hunger......those of you who know me know that I have a high maintenance body, take plenty of food to keep it going..........when I finally convinced her that we could pass on the digeridous and the hurdy gurdy's. We ate at BD's Mongolian Barbecue.....then we went to White's Music Store.......and then had a dessert (someone ought to go to jail for making this thing......chocolate and rasberry)and coffee at the International Travellers Club and Tuba Museum. If you are ever in Okemos, Michigan you must stop there and eat. We stopped at the local Hypermarket so she could get some coffee for her room.......the poor child had never seen the modern technology for paying by card, got terribly confused, the cashier wondered if she came from Mars or something hahahahahaha........a quick stop at the Circuit City. Then I dropped her off and came home.

I listened to her old time style (over and over and over.............LOL) at Elderly. She is doing Dwight Diller proud. And Rick................before she played the first note on any one of the thousands of banjo's she tried .............. she tuned. You have taught her well, my friend.

Got to go to bed, early morning tomorrow.

I loved having you here, Bonnie. Glad we are friends. Come back soon.

All the best,

Big Mick

Actually Guy, I took her to the Mongolian Barbecue. This is a make your own stir fry. Bonnie made hers with Tofu and vegies and mine was seafood and chicken. This is served with rice and tortilla's. All in all a healthy meal. Bonnie was drinking water and meself was on the diet Coke. So I wasna totally healthy. And the dessert was sinful.

I will leave most of the reporting on Dwight Dillers banjo style to Bonnie. Suffice it to say that in order to play in his style requires that you "let yourself go" and sink in. It is a very regionalized and old W. Virginia style of which he is the leading authority on, as he was raised with it. He and his acolytes have (this is my opinion only) a rather parochial view of the style in that if you weren't raised with it you will never master it. I generally don't buy into these types of things as I believe it all comes down to practice. But she is enjoying it immensely and her technique sounded very good as she played at Elderly. I would say she is well along the trail.

We had a marvelous time and wonderful conversations. She is a joy to have around.

Mick

Hi everybody, its Me.
I had an amazing time with Big Mick. These Dwight Diller workshops are an experience of a life time but so is spending a day with Mick.
I got the grand tour of Elderly. What a store!
Rick, I did tune those banjos before I played them, you would have been mighty proud.
The best part was having Mick sing me a song at the White Brothers music store. That is a moment I will never forget. Mick is such a generous, loving person. Being able to spend time with him meant a great deal to me.

Mr. Wolff, I've notice Mick makes healthy food choices. Although, the volume is another story. We won't mention the 'To Die For' dessert we had at the Tuba cafe will we Mick.

As for the Dwight Diller workshops, I will wait until I get back home to tell you all about those. Right now I am so immersed in the music and teachings I can hardly put it into words. I have West Virginia clawhammer style lessons morning and afternoon with tune sessions running late into the evening. My fingers are so sore but I am a very happy puppy soaking up all this music like a sponge.

Rick, thank you very, very much for teaching me how to pick up tunes by ear. I am getting so much more out of these workshops because of the foundation you have given me.

I'll write more soon,
Bonnie

What a movie Mick. Great way to start off the second banjo workshop. I think you can apply the same concepts from the movie to learning music. I haven't read the thread discussing this movie but that is what I got out of it. Harnessing the energy and chanelling it through spirit.
I can also appreciate better a female in martial arts.

I think I might move to the US. Did you know popcorn refills are only 25 cents. What a bargain!!!!
I keep asking everyone 'Where is the washroom?'. They look at me kind of funny.

Last night we had an old-time session. The driving beat was so strong I thought the roof was going to cave in. Never heard anything quite like it.

Speak to you later,
Bonnie
