Lyr Req: The Auld Triangle

Subject: The Auld Triangle
From: GUEST,Pam Alexander

I would like the lyrics of the "Auld Triangle". Also I would like to know the title of two other Irish folk songs the first lines of which are:-

1)Dublin can be heaven with coffee at eleven...... 2)Lonely I wandered through scenes of my childhood

Thanks

PA

Is this one of them?

THE OLD HOUSE
(As sung by Foster & Allen)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lonely, I wandered through scenes of my childhood
They bring back to memory the happy days of yore
Gone are the old folk, the house stands deserted
No light in the window, no welcome at the door

Here's where the children played games on the heather
Here's where they sailed their wee boats from the berm
Where are they now? Some are dead, some have wandered
No more to their home will the children return

Lonely, the house now, and lonely, the moorland
The children have scattered, the old folk are gone
Why stand I here, like a ghost or a shadow?
It's time I was movin', it's time I passed on

You know, something that had never occurred to me in years of singing until recently, is that The Ould Triangle is to the tune of The Galway Shawl. I suppose they are filed in different parts of my brain.

The only problem is that you could have a whole bunch of songs with the same tune, and sing them one after another without realising it. Embarrassing. (A bit like the time someone asked for a suggestion for the next song she should sing, and I asked for the one she'd just finished singing...)

The Auld Triangle used to the the name of the Pogues fan club, "the old triangle went jingle bloody jangle!" (Shane MacGowan). Of course it was written by Brendan Behan, a hero of Shane's for literary and alcoholic reasons. Dario and Ingrid if you're out there, still got the newsletters!

Nah, definitely not old age Spaw - but I don't have a good excuse for it. Next I'll find out that "the Star of the County Down" is sung to "The Star of the County Down" or something equally obvious. I despair. Ten "Mary Had a Little Lamb"s and a decade of the "Rose of Tralee" as penance.

Is bowsey a real term of abuse? I sometimes sing bastard. Behan might have meant bastard but the word was too strong for the times?

Moreton Bay also goes to to the same tune, and I sing all three. The version I do has these lines,
And Captain Logan, he had us mangled,
At the old triangles of Moreton Bay.
Keith.

Someone pointed out that once you've heard one Irish tune, you've heard them both.

well, it took me years to figure out that the ABC song is sung to the same tune as twinkle twinkle little star!

'Bowsie' - term of abuse ?? I'd take it as a compliment - especially from
a prison warder. Seriously - I suppose it'd be the equivalent of 'lout'
or some similar word. Often coupled with the phrase 'good-for-nothing'. An
Irish/Dublin synonym would be 'gouger'. I've also known country relatives
to use the almost quaint 'blackguard' (pron. blagard). 'bowsie' would be less
shocking than 'bastard' probably only because it's less well known.

Funnily enough, I've also seen the word(s) 'Auld Triangler' used as a
term of abuse in an article about a famous Dublin singing club - bleddy purists...

I sing the Dubs version of this as an opener when I'm in Ireland.

I was once in a discussion about it's authorship with a very knowledgable Welsh friend - He said Dominic, I said Brendan....Until another friend suggested it was written by their two lesser known brothers, Gay and Les.......

I've always heard that it used to wake prisoners, call meal times, etc. Just a triangle-shaped piece of metal that was banged on.

In the female prison there are seventy-five women,
And it's there among them that I'd like to dwell,
Then my old triangle would go "jingle jangle!"
Along the banks of the Royal Canal.

Does Brendan have to draw you a picture? :-)

Isn't the Auld Triangle a Scottish variant?
