Some time ago I heard this song (maybe Ellen Vannin?) about a shipwreck in the Irish Sea. I can't find out anything about it - can anyone help?

Words are in the database - now all we desperately need are the chords!

There have been many threads about this song. Here's a link to a post telling about the background of the song.

Jacko in NZ sings this song on Paltalk. I am sure he can post the chords for you. Perhaps you could PM him. Yours, Aye. Dave (who has sailed over her grave many times)

Oh Ellen Vannin of the Isle of Man Company, Poor Ellen Vannin she's lost in the Irish Sea. That's the chorus anyhow, it must be about thirty years since I last heard that song. I do have the words and I think the chords in an old book of my wife's at home, I will have to dig it out. JohnB

Here's the chords as I remember them.
Hope this way of typing is ok Alison introduced me to it a while back and it saves the problem of formatting.
There is a shareware program out there somewhere that will take this style (called chord pro.)and change it to the more usual chords above words.

(Am)Snaefell, Tyn Wald, (Dm)Ben Mych(Am)ree
Fourteen ships have (E)sailed the (Am)sea
Proudly (D)bearing a (G)Manx (Em)name

Chorus

(C)Lost in the (Em)Irish (Am)Sea

Music to follow later tonight

Hughie Jones (of 'The Spinners' - the Liverpool folk group!) wrote the song, and is still around.

Good on yer, Hughie!

The chords Hughie Jones gives in "Hughie's Ditty Bag" vary a little from the the ones Kernow John has given. Here they are:

Of the (Dm)Isle of Man Company(Am)-
(Dm)O Ellen (Am)Vanin

Heard it years ago on an old Spinners album,
have never sung the song in public as it does not seem to captivate the Danish audience in bars as well as in the British Isles - however I do not quite agree with mr Kernow as he posted the chords nearly ten years ago.

(Am)Snaefell, Tyn Wald, (Dm)Ben(G) Mych(Am)ree
Fourteen ships have (Em)sailed the (Am)sea
(F)Proudly (G)bearing a (C)Manx (Am)name
(Am)But there's one will (EM)never a(Am)gain

Chorus
(Dm)O Ellan (Am)VaNnin
Of the (Dm)Isle of Man (Dm)Compa(Am)ny
(Dm)O Ellen (Am)Vanin
(Am)Lost in the (Em)Irish (Am)Sea

Slán go fóill.

Yep you definitely need a D MAJOR in the second line, as shown in the set given from "Hughie's Ditty Bag" quoted by John Freeman in March 01, as the notes of the tune in 2nd line (in key of Am) are A G FSharp D G G E. If you're singing a flat F it's not how the Spinners did it!

As Hughie Jones wrote both the song and the tune - without help from anyone!! Suggest it would be at least polite to ask him for permission

Hi, Ned -
I found a recording on Spotify of a performance of "Ellan Vannin (Dear Isle of Man)," performed by the Glasgow Orpheus Choir under the direction of Sir Hugh Roberton (of Mingulay Boat Song fame). Also another by the Seven Towers Choir. I suppose, however, that you're seeking a choral arrangement on sheet music.

Not a full arrangement, but this (click) may help you.

Oh, and since you're in the UK, it looks like you can buy a choral arrangement through Amacon:

That's a different song, Joe. A friend who has Manx connections sings it. Lovely song, but not The Spinners' one.
