Woody third but Judy triumphs

This fromt he BBC ONline: I'm not sure about the last 2 or the baseball song but I guess a lot of these are among everyone's favourites. Judy Garland wins but Woody is at 3 and Louis and Fats get in there plus the Duke. Strange West Side Story get in there rather than a particular song. Story follows:

Over the Rainbow sung by Judy Garland has been voted the best song of the 20th Century, according to the American music industry. In a poll of critics, musicians and industry executives conducted by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the National Endowment for the Arts, the song from the 1939 film Wizard of Oz heads a list of mainly American tastes.

"These are songs a lot of people would recognize if they were white, middle-class and old," Bob George, of the Archive of Contemporary Music, said.

"It's a great list for people who go to baseball games."

Songs of the Century - Top 20

1. Over the Rainbow - Judy Garland 2. White Christmas - Bing Crosby 3. This Land is Your Land - Woody Guthrie 4. Respect - Aretha Franklin 5. American Pie - Don McLean 6. Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy - The Andrews Sisters 7. West Side Story - Original Cast 8. Take Me Out To The Ball Game - Billy Murray 9. You've Lost That Lovin Feelin' - The Righteous Brothers 10. The Entertainer - Scott Joplin

11. In The Mood - Glenn Miller Orchestra 12 . Rock Around the Clock - Bill Haley & The Comets 13. When the Saints Go Marching In - Louis Armstrong 14. You Are My Sunshine - Jimmie Davis 15. Mack the Knife - Bobby Darin 16. Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones 17. Take the 'A' Train - Duke Ellington Orchestra 18. Blueberry Hill - Fats Domino 19. God Bless America - Kate Smith 20. Stars and Stripes Forever - Sousa's Band

I'm glad Take me Out to the Ball Game is there but isn't that a Von Tilzer song? There seems to me no pattern to the crediting of the song; e.g., White Christmas is attributed to Crosby, not Irving Berlin, yet This Land is credited to Woody, and the Entertainer (not Maple Leaf?) to Scott Joplin. I never heard of Billy Murray; could somebody enlighten me?

Karen heard this list on the way home and was impressed that "American Pie" came in 5th.

For me, I find it interesting that "God Bless America" came in 19th and the song that it inspired Woody to write, "This Land Is Your Land," as a protest to 'God Bless America' came in 3rd!

Hi Spaw, Yes, but Irving Berlin has two songs on the list (both holiday songs) and Woody only has one. Sometimes I sing This Land with Woody's original tag (the one he crossed out) "God blessed America for me"

Speechless...dumbfounded...where oh where is 'Stairway to Heaven'?

Nice to see at least three of the composers were seriously subversive 'commie' pinkos.

Sorry Rick, I don't think "aspiring rock guitarists" got to vote.

I'm not sure if Woody coming third is a "good thing" or not. A while ago I met a couple of girls singing "This Land" and asked them if they know who wrote it. No, we got it from a book. Do you know the other two verses. No. Do you know what the song's really about. No. People consider it some kind of national anthem rather than a song of protest. I'm sure if the "shadow of the steeple" and the "private property" verses were well know it woould not have passed into kids' song books and would never have made it. A good thing too??Dr John

(from dick greenhaus) Pete- The attribution is for the performer, not the composer. It's likely the stupidest listing I've ever encountered---Woody in third, and Stardust somewhere around 70th; No Beatles in the top 25 etc. Pshaw!

So, uh, PT.....Did you ever compile any of those "TOP" lists on the threads you started?

Let's face it, no matter what group it is, its gonna' stink to some and be a bed of roses to others.......that's why I hate the damn things. Well that, and I can never make up my mind on some.

Billy Murray was a singer in the early days of the 78 record. Appeared mostly on Victor scroll. Almost any of the old songs - he done 'em. For example, his "K-K-K-Katy" was the popular version.

Often sang duets with Ada Jones.

He was also part of some of the early quartets, etc. Over time he appeared with the Peerless Quartette, American Quartette, Sterling Trio, probably several others.

One of my favorites, as I collect music of the period.

Well, if the Righteous Brothers are on anyone's top-anything list, the list is highly suspect. These guys were a burlesque of soul music. They liked to brag that black DJs played them thinking they were black performers -- except that no soul singer in his or her right mind would sing like that.

some list makers have no idea how to discriminate between..."good".."famous".."seminal".."important".."popular".."lucrative".....and that all important one.."lucky in its timing"

wowee, gang..who's greatest, Bill Monroe, Mantovani, or Leopold Stowkowski? Can Richard Dyer-Bennet play guitar better than Doc Watson?.......

Who'd win a song writing contest...Bob Dylan, Eric Bogle, Woody Gutherie, Red River Dave or Hoagy Carmichael?

golly, I'd better start a thread on each of them important questions!!!

Actually, these are easy: Bill Monroe, Doc, and...well, this is a little harder...I'll go with Hoagy Carmichael -- Dylan and Woody were "of their time", but Hoagy wrote much more complex, timeless tunes.

I find some of Woody's songs quite timeless. "This Land is Your Land" is obvious, but, just because a song has historic context ("So Long, It's Been Good to Know Ya") wouldn't disqualify its timelessness in my book. 'Course, that's just my book. Hoagy wrote a lot of love songs -- I guess those are timeless by definition, but they generally don't appeal to moi.

Spaw speaks of the crazy lists people come up with. Reminds me of the "100 Most Important People" of the past 1000 years A&E came up with. Oh well, at least they got #1 right. (IMHO)

Message for Tiger-- I'm glad somebody knew who Billy Murray was. . .a long time ago I asked in the Forum if anybody knew anything about Harry C. Browne, banjo player who used to record with the Peerless Quartette (yes, that spelling) and there were NO answers. Now you refer to the P.Q. so you must know something! Can you help me learn more about Harry C. Browne?
PS: Thanks Dick: performer rather than author, but I don't think that's right for Woody; whose recording of This Land is heard most often? (I don't know! I first heard it on a Weavers record)

OK. I admit it. I am lost. What for Spaw ? Please forgive my ignorance. I just joined up a short bit ago and I'm also pretty ignorant about folk and blues, being from the a little place called Three Miles In Back Of Beyond, Kent County, New Brunswick, CAN. If you don't know where that is, it's about ten miles from East Overshoe, as the crow flies.

gnu,

Spaw was jest kiddin', making the "assumption" that A&E had picked him as the number one most important person of the past 1000 years. My reply is in reference to the person they did actually pick, crediting Spaw with the invention of movable type -- the printing press.

Ya gotta think sideways here, sometimes...(Don't even touch that, 'Spaw!)
