Lyr/Chords Req: The Internationale

From: GUEST,Natalie

Hi people..

For a long time I've been looking for the chords for the song "The Internationale", the old French workers' song. I would be thrilled if someone took the time to write down the chords for me. I have a very bad air, so I'm not able to figure them out by myself. I know lots of chords though, hehe..

I'd be really grateful if someone took the time!!

Greetings,

Natalie

Hi Natalie, Billy Bragg did a version of what I believe is the same song, and if I'm not mistaken, his official website has links to chords and lyrics for his stuff. I think the url is www.billybragg.co.uk Hope that helps, Timothy Cameron

I know it's been a while, but I was recently looking for chords for The Internationale and came across the version by The New Singers from the "Songs For Political Action" CD and tried my hand at figurng them out. I think I got pretty close but could use a tweak or two if anyone out there would lend a hand.
(I hope the line spacing lines up correctly.)
Here they is:

   G                                 C
A-rise ye prisoners of sal-vation,

    D                                 G
A-rise ye wretched of the earth,

      G                                  C
For justice thunders condem-nation

    D                      G
A better world's at birth

      D                                       D7
No more traditions chains shall bind us

             A7                   D
Arise ye slaves, no more enthrall

       D                                     G
The earth shall rise on new foundations

                      A7                        D
We have been naught, we shall be all.

(Chorus):
            G      C
'Tis the final conflict,
             D                G - D7
let each stand in his place

       G                C
The International Soviet

       A                   D
Shall be the human race
            G      C
'Tis the final conflict,
             D                G - D7
let each stand in his place

       G                C
The Internationale Soviet

       G       D          G
Shall be the human race

This link gives you the Klingon translation of the Internationale and other stuff as well - very rousing, I have no doubt.

Here is the chorus:

   batlh may''a' Qav wIghobjaj,
   Qoy, be'nI'! Qoy, loDnI'!
   'u' choHmoHbej ghobmaj, --
   Hoch qo' roghvaH DIvI'.

Guest: For "salvation" read "starvation". %^) For "at birth" read "in birth". For "enthrall" read "in thrall".

Is there any chance to get tabs from Internationale? I mean for guitar melody.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE INTERNATIONALE (Billy Bragg)
From: McGrath of Harlow

Here are the word s of Billy Bragg's version (From here):

Stand up, all victims of oppression
For the tyrants fear your might
Don't cling so hard to your possessions
For you have nothing, if you have no rights
Let racist ignorance be ended
For respect makes the empires fall
Freedom is merely privilege extended
Unless enjoyed by one and all

Chorus:
So come brothers and sisters
For the struggle carries on
The Internationale
Unites the world in song
So comrades come rally
For this is the time and place
The international ideal
Unites the human race

Let no one build walls to divide us
Walls of hatred nor walls of stone
Come greet the dawn and stand beside us
We'll live together or we'll die alone
In our world poisoned by exploitation
Those who have taken, now they must give
And end the vanity of nations
We've but one Earth on which to live

And so begins the final drama
In the streets and in the fields
We stand unbowed before their armour
We defy their guns and shields
When we fight, provoked by their aggression
Let us be inspired by like and love
For though they offer us concessions
Change will not come from above

Very worthy, but I feel somehow it lacks a bit of punch.

The version Paul Durst sang for me in 1961 is as it was sung by him and his Wobbly compatriots in the early years of the 2oth century. You can find the lyric in Archie Green's (and other's) grand VERY recent book called "THE BIG RED SONG BOOK" ---- contains just aboout every song published in the many editions of the Wobbly's Little Red Songbooks.

I hope this helps you!

This song is notoriously difficult to sing, first because the lyrics, and the ideas contained within, are overblown and cumbersome, and second, because there are so many different versions of the lyrics.

How can you unite the proletariat to rise as one, when no one even agrees on the words to the battle cry?

MTed, Sort of true. Best to stick with the Wobbly preamble. Gets right to the point.

If Woody had written "The Internationale", every school child would be singing it today. His genius was to express these ideas in simple, human terms, that everyone could understand, remember, and sing.

I suspect that you could go through "The Internationale" line by line and find a Woody song that illustrated every point.

Michael Moore's new film, CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY, has a lounge version of this sung over the final credits.

Took me half a chorus to recognize it!

The French words are better than any translation I've come across, in any language I can understand, anyway.

Debout les damnés de la terre
Debout les forçats de la faim
La raison tonne en son cratère
C'est l'éruption de la fin
Du passe faisons table rase
Foules, esclaves, debout, debout
Le monde va changer de base
Nous ne sommes rien, soyons tout

    C'est la lutte finale
    Groupons-nous, et demain (bis)
    L'Internationale
    Sera le genre humain

(Mind, that Klingon version looks promising...)

Words always vary sonewhat as any english version is a translation. There is more than one verse and I frequently see a different order of verses 2 & 3. The chords shown in a guests version above are not wrong but would stand some refinement, try these:-

      The INTERNATIONAL

G                                C    Am
Arise! ye starvelings from your slumbers,
         D              G
Arise ye criminals of want;
                         C    Am
For reason in revolt now thunders,
       D            D7    G
And at last ends the age of cant.
G   D              A7        D
Now away with all super-stit-ions,
        A7            D
Servile masses arise arise!
                                   G(or G7)
We'll change forthwith the old con-dit-ions,
             D              A7      D
And spurn the dust to win the prize.

Chorus:-
D7   G                   C   Am           D              Am    G
Then comrades come rall-y, And the last fight let us face,
         D         Em    Am               D
The Inter-nation-al, Un-ites the human race;
D7   G             C   Am           D              D7    G
Then comrades come rall-y, And the last fight let us face,
    E7 E               Am   G         D    G
The Int-er-na-tion-al, Un-ites the hu-man race.

No saviours from on high deliver,
No trust have we in prince or peer,
Our own right hand the chains must shiver,
Chains of hatred of greed and fear;
Ere the thieves will disgorge their booty,
And to all give a happier lot,
Each at his forge must do his duty,
And strike the iron whilst its hot.
Chorus

We peasants artisans and others,
Enrolled among the sons of toil;
Let's claim the earth henceforth for brothers,
Drive the indolent from the soil;
On our flesh too long has fed the raven,
We've too long been the vultures prey,
But now farewell the spirit craven,
The dawn brings in a brighter day.
Chorus

I have tried to get the precise timing of them correct but as I hav e them on a "word document" in 3 different fonts the copy and paste may have left someting to be desired. You will note that there is a key change from G to D & back to D.

Anecdotally... The drunkards' chorus (Fr.)

"C'est la cuite finale
Soûlons-nous car demain,
C'est l'eau minérale
Qui remplacera le vin..."

Transl. "It is the final bender
Let's get drunk for tomorrow,
It's mineral water
That will replace the wine..."

Just saw Capitalism, a Love Story. Fabulous version, by Tony Babino apparently (according to a web posting), who sings as Tony B. Some great music in this film; waiting eagerly for the soundtrack album.
