They could do with some of this in NZ. 70,000,000 of them eat 30,000 tons of vegetation a day. Thought for the day. GB

All I can contribute in this vain is an old Walt Kelly verse:

How much ground round could a hound dog hog,
If a ground hog was ground round?

shoot dang!

i'm thinking we in the cafe could come up with a reasonable version of our own that my friend would be happy enough with to get some shut-eye.

As a longtime icon and mascot of Mudcat, I find this thread very offensive to me and my brethren. I hope someone can find these atrocious words quickly so that this thread will go away. That nasty Cletus has already been making fun of me and were it not for Catspaw's intervention, I fear he would have done me harm. The last ime I was this offended was when the thread ran asking for a song called "Five Pounds of Possum in my Headlights Tonight."

oh, i do apologise most sincerely, mr. o'possum, dear.

i'm sure it's a protest song, at that.

Walter and Willa Volz might know of it... they know all the possum songs! They host a radio show in St. Louis on Sundays from 12-2 featuring straight-up bluegrass. Send them an email at bluegrassbreakdown@kdhx.org

Chop That Possum Up - trad.

Chop that possum up, boys
Hunt that possum down
Drill that possum threw the head
And nail 'im to the ground
Chop that possum into little teeny bits of meat
Wrap him up in applesauce and grill him up complete

Now that possum's dead, boys
He don't play no more
No more little possum feet
Scrambling on mah floor
No more little possum eyes
Look through mah window pane
No more little possum lies
Since we-all stewed his brains

Chop that possum up, boys
Hunt that possum down
Drill that possum threw the head
And nail 'im to the ground
Chop that possum into little teeny bits of meat
Wrap him up in applesauce and grill him up complete

The above song was culled from Hillbilly Laments of the 1700's, a book which is now regrettably out of print...

Thanks LH for an amazing piece of history. Hopefully NZ will find a better way to deal with the net loss of 10,000 tons of foliage a day. GB

One of Frank Warner's collected songs, I think it was "Lynchburg Town," had the following cautionary possum verse:

Love it is a killing thing,
Beauty is a blossom;
If you want your finger bit,
Poke it at a possum!

CARVE DAT POSSUM
(Sam Lucas, c1875)

And dar was a possum up dat tree. (Carve him to de heart.)

CHO: Carve dat possum. Carve dat possum, children.
Carve dat possum. Carve him to de heart.

Carve dat possum. Carve him to de heart.

De possum he began to grin. (Carve him to de heart.)
I carried him home and dressed him off. (Carve him to de heart.)
I hung him dat night in de frost. (Carve him to de heart.) CHO.

De way to cook de possum sound: (Carve him to de heart.)
Fust parbile him, den bake him brown. (Carve him to de heart.)
