The line "(I) can't walk for running" tends to be often misheard, so when you see the "lyrics" to this song posted online or typed up elsewhere, you will find that line morphed into things like: "Hockey walls a-runnin'" or "Cane foam's a-runnin'" or other similar non-sensical lines. I think it comes from singers pronouncing it like "Ah cain't walk fer runnin'." or |

Using the search box for christmas tim* will bring up a fairly long list. Then use [CTRL-F] on your browser and look for comi. Better than that, use the Filter to search for thread titles - for christmas tim and then [CTRL-F] for comi. [The filter does not need or accept "wild cards" like * and ??] But if you use the Filter to look for a song thread, be sure also to use our Digital Tradition search tools to check there. Sounds like a hassle, but it gets easy. Oh, one other thing: on the QuickLinks dropdown menu on almost every Mudcat page, you'll find an entry marked Old advanced Forum Search, which includes almost all of our old and newer search tools on one page. (Q, I did put [Christmas Time's A-Comin] in the search box. I left off the final g and the apostrophe, because it could have been posted either way. But I got absolutely nothing. Maybe it's because I typed "a-comin" instead of (incorrect) "a comin". But this sometimes a DT/Forum search fails to find a title even when I have typed a title exactly the way it is in the DT and/or forum. The lyrics I posted aren't really different from the ones that Masato posted from that website. But I transcribed them from a video of Bill Monroe, and he starts out with a verse, not with the chorus. He may have the verses in different order, too. It doesn't really matter with this song. One slight modification needed in the way the lyrics in Masato's post are presented: This way doesn't scan right with the rhythm (measures) of the song: Can't you hear them bells ringin' Bringin' joy to all, hear them singin'. When it's snowin' I'll be goin' Back to my country home. This way goes (4/4 time): / ... Can't you / hear them bells ringin', bringin' / Joy to all? It's all on there just clear as a bell, so copy your lyrics from it - you get to hear the song a whole bunch that way. Also, pick your key and know that the chords 1-4-5 will do just fine. And, yeah, it's just your basic bluegrass chords. Piece o' cake. (Now the fancy pickin' and fiddlin', not quite so easy, of course.) "Times" is clearly wrong (unless it's plural, in which case it should be "Christmas Times' A-comin'." And to say something is "a coming" means something quite different from saying that something is "a-coming." (I can just hear the bawdy parodies based on the spelling without the hyphen. Oy!) Of course, song titles often contain misspelling, either out of ignorance/careless or sometimes on purpose. My question for Mudcat is, why does the search function work sometimes and not at others? |

Also, most search engines don't acknowledge apostrophes. If you type "a-coming," it will turn into "a coming." Anyway, the question is, if you didn't have the song (CD, sheet music, YouTube) already in front of you, how would you know it's usually spelled wrong? LOL BTW, now when I search for "Christmas Time's A-Comin" I get links to several threads and posts, including the old thread titled "Christmas Time's a Comin' -- but that did not happen when I tried it a few days ago. |
