Help,

I'm trying to find the lyrics and chords for the bluegrass tune

"Christmas time's a-comin'"

(Christmas time's a-comin',
Christmas time's a-comin',
Christmas time's a-comin'
and I know I'm goin' home, etc.)

Any help would be appreciated - thanks.

It's a little late, but..... A common Christmas tune.

Christmas Time's a-Coming

Christmas time's a coming
Christmas time's a coming
Christmas time's a coming
And I know I'm going home

Chorus
Can't you hear them bells
A ringing, ringing
Joy to all oh hear them singing
When it's snowing I'll be going
Back to my country home

Snow flakes a falling
My old home's a calling
Tall pines a humming
Christmas time's a coming

Candle lights a burning
My old heart's a yearning
Not far from the homeland
Christmas time's a coming

Holly in the window
Home where the wind blows
Can't walk for running
Christmas time's a coming

Isn't the following from this webpage the original version?

CHRISTMAS TIME'S A-COMING
Words and music by Tex Logan
As recorded by Emmylou Harris on "Light of the Stable" (Warner Bros. Records 4468, 1980)

Christmas time's a-comin'.
Christmas time's a-comin'.
Christmas time's a-comin'
And I know I'm goin' home.

Snowflakes a-fallin',
My old home's a-callin',
Tall pines a-hummin',
Christmas time's a-comin'.

Can't you hear them bells ringin', bringin'
Joy to all? Hear them singin'!
When it's snowin' I'll be goin'
Back to my country home.

Christmas time's a-comin'.
Christmas time's a-comin'.
Christmas time's a-comin'
And I know I'm goin' home.

Holly's in the window.
Home's where the wind blows.
Can't walk for runnin'.
Christmas time's a-comin'.

Can't you hear them bells ringin', bringin'
Joy to all? Hear them singin'!
When it's snowin' I'll be goin'
Back to my country home.

Christmas time's a-comin'.
Christmas time's a-comin'.
Christmas time's a-comin'
And I know I'm goin' home.

White candles burnin'.
My old heart's a-yearnin'.
For the folks at home when
Christmas time's a-comin'

Can't you hear them bells ringin', bringin'
Joy to all? Hear them singin'!
When it's snowin' I'll be goin'
Back to my country home.

Christmas time's a-comin'.
Christmas time's a-comin'.
Christmas time's a-comin'
And I know I'm goin' home.

Don't know for sure, Masato. Either way works. Only a slight change in the lyrics.

There must be dozens of variations
of this popular seasonal song
Bill Monroe recorded it
The Osborne Brothers recorded it
Marty Stuart does it
Each with slightly different lyrics

This is a great bluegrass Christmas classic, recorded by Bill Monroe, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and a slew of others.   Couldn't find it in the DT or forum, so here are the lyrics.

CHRISTMAS TIME'S A-COMING
(words and music by Tex Logan)

Holly's in the window
Home where the wind blows.
Can't walk for running!
Christmas times a-coming!

Can't you hear them bells ringing, bringing
Joy to all? Don't you hear them singing?
When it's snowing I'll be going *
Back to my country home.

Christmas times a-coming,
Christmas times a-coming,
Christmas times a' coming
And I know I'm going home.

White candles burning,*
My old heart's a-yearning
For the folks at home when
Christmas times a-coming.

Can't you hear them bells ringing, bringing
Joy to all? Don't you hear them singing?
When it's snowing I'll be going
Back to my country home.

Christmas times a-coming,
Christmas times a-coming,
Christmas times a' coming
And I know I'm going home.

Snowflakes a-falling,
My old home is calling,
Tall pines are humming -
Christmas time's a-coming.

Can't you hear them bells ringing, bringing
Joy to all? Don't you hear them singing?
When it's snowing I'll be going
Back to my country home.

*Alternate lyric: Home fires are burning

This song is also the source of a widespread mondegreen or two.

The line "(I) can't walk for running" tends to be often misheard, so when you see the "lyrics" to this song posted online or typed up elsewhere, you will find that line morphed into things like:

"Hockey walls a-runnin'"
or
"Cane foam's a-runnin'"
or other similar non-sensical lines.

I think it comes from singers pronouncing it like "Ah cain't walk fer runnin'."

Already posted in a thread called Christmas Times a Comin'.

Too bad they left the apostrophe out of "Time's" in the thread title. Otherwise, you would have found it, right, Genie?

Put in times or time's, the old thread comes up, however-

Every version posted has slightly different words, so this thread by Genie is not exactly a duplicate.

I wonder if a clone could combine the two threads so all the little variations would be together.

This is when it helps to search for less instead of more. Using the search box for christmas tim* will bring up a fairly long list. Then use [CTRL-F] on your browser and look for comi.

Better than that, use the Filter to search for thread titles - for christmas tim and then [CTRL-F] for comi. [The filter does not need or accept "wild cards" like * and ??]
But if you use the Filter to look for a song thread, be sure also to use our Digital Tradition search tools to check there.

Sounds like a hassle, but it gets easy.

Oh, one other thing: on the QuickLinks dropdown menu on almost every Mudcat page, you'll find an entry marked Old advanced Forum Search, which includes almost all of our old and newer search tools on one page. And there are even more search tools in the first message of the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions).

That's probably why it didn't turn up in my DT/Forum search, Jim. (Q, I did put [Christmas Time's A-Comin] in the search box. I left off the final g and the apostrophe, because it could have been posted either way. But I got absolutely nothing. Maybe it's because I typed "a-comin" instead of (incorrect) "a comin". But this sometimes a DT/Forum search fails to find a title even when I have typed a title exactly the way it is in the DT and/or forum.

The lyrics I posted aren't really different from the ones that Masato posted from that website.
But I transcribed them from a video of Bill Monroe, and he starts out with a verse, not with the chorus.   He may have the verses in different order, too. It doesn't really matter with this song.

One slight modification needed in the way the lyrics in Masato's post are presented:

This way doesn't scan right with the rhythm (measures) of the song:

Can't you hear them bells ringin'
Bringin' joy to all, hear them singin'.
When it's snowin' I'll be goin'
Back to my country home.

This way goes (4/4 time):

/ ... Can't you / hear them bells ringin', bringin' /
Joy to all? Hear them singin'. /
When it's snowin' I'll be goin' /
Back to my country home. /

Subject: RE: req/ADD: Christmas Time's a Comin'

If you count it as 2/4 time, here's how the lyrics fit the measures:

/ Can't you / hear them bells / ringin', bringin' /
Joy to all? / Hear them singin'. /
When it's snowin' I'll be goin' /
Back to my / country home. /

You don't have to search any further than the album, "Light Of The Stable," by Emmylou. It's all on there just clear as a bell, so copy your lyrics from it - you get to hear the song a whole bunch that way. Also, pick your key and know that the chords 1-4-5 will do just fine. Great song, been doin' it for years.
Merry Christmas to ya,..................................Harrison

The lyrics are crystal clear when Bill Monroe sings them too. And, yeah, it's just your basic bluegrass chords. Piece o' cake.   (Now the fancy pickin' and fiddlin', not quite so easy, of course.)

BTW, re the DT/Forum search thing, today I plugged in all these variations on the song title:

Christmas Time's A-Comin'
Christmas Time's A-Coming
Christmas Time's A-Comin

Christmas Time's A Comin'
Christmas Time's A Coming
Christmas Time's A Comin

Christmas Times A-Comin'
Christmas Times A-Coming
Christmas Times A-Comin

Christmas Times A Comin'
Christmas Times A Coming
Christmas Times A Comin

and some of them brought up one or two threads or posts, others brought up three or four threads and up to 9 posts, but all of them yielded something pertaining to the song - even taking me to threads/posts with different spellings.   But when I searched for the song before starting my new thread this week, I used "Christmas Time's A-Comin" and got absolutely nothing.   Strange.

The correct spelling would be "Christmas Time's A-comin'," "Christmas Time's A-coming," "Christmastime's A-comin'," or "Christmastime's A-coming."   "Times" is clearly wrong (unless it's plural, in which case it should be "Christmas Times' A-comin'." And to say something is "a coming" means something quite different from saying that something is "a-coming."   (I can just hear the bawdy parodies based on the spelling without the hyphen. Oy!)

Of course, song titles often contain misspelling, either out of ignorance/careless or sometimes on purpose.

My question for Mudcat is, why does the search function work sometimes and not at others?

Genie, Christmas times and Christmas time's both work for me. Your mojo ain't workin'.

The mis-spelling 'times' outscores 'time's' 61-39 at allmusic.com. Moosisans just ain't eddycated!

It's those dang teens w ther internets n textg, dont u no? Cant waste space w punct or rit speling.

Also, most search engines don't acknowledge apostrophes. If you type "a-coming," it will turn into "a coming."

Anyway, the question is, if you didn't have the song (CD, sheet music, YouTube) already in front of you, how would you know it's usually spelled wrong?   LOL

BTW, now when I search for "Christmas Time's A-Comin" I get links to several threads and posts, including the old thread titled "Christmas Time's a Comin' -- but that did not happen when I tried it a few days ago.
