"Oh, the early bird's the one that gets the worm, they say,
Gettin' up and pecking at the very break of day.
But around our house we contradict the thought of that old wheeze,
'Cause we know that it's the second mouse that gets the cheese!"

Will that help? I even made a tune for it, but I can't post it.

Dave, that's pretty neat.

Maybe someone can come up with verses for "There Are No Mouse Traps in Heaven."

It must be 20 years since I heard that shaggy dog story. Now they're all flooding back - all those toe-curlingly awful ones we used to inflict on each other in the pub. I can hear the groans now - darn it, my head will be full of them all afternoon. Like the one about....

Them suckers hurt ! Your lucky he didn't get a broken finger. I suppose you know just how big the afterschool buddies' fathers are ? It might be a consideration, even if they were up to no good. Sometimes an irate parent might not care about his little one's actions in relation to the consequences.

BTW, intruder's poem minds me of the movie Never Cry Wolf, which I consider a classic. The cinematography is only outdone by the humour. If you have never seen it, rent it today - you will howl with laughter.

Subject: Lyr Add: RODENT MARINERS (Hamish MacLaren)
From: GUEST,Roll&Go-C

Well, this is one of my favorites among the "rediscovered" songs, a maritime rat empowerment song:
THE RODENT MARINERS
(By Hamish MacLaren, Sailor with Banjo, © 1930 Adapted by Charlie Ipcar Tune adapted from: Blow the Candle Out)

We are the rodent ma-ri-ne-ers,
As nobody needs be told,
For there's no mis-taking our nau-ti-cal airs,
Our rolling eyes so bold;
There's never a ship leaves English ground,
From Liverpool Docks to Plymouth Sound,
For Frisco Bay or Bombay bound,
But we have free run of her hold!

We march aboard in companies,
All in the dead of night,
Over the hawsers from the quays
In the shadow of the watch lamplight;
Each roving rat his ship will choose,
From nose to nose we pass the news
Of cargoes, destination, crews,
And none can us affright.

REFRAIN
Each roving rat his ship will choose,
From nose to nose we pass the news
Of cargoes, destination, crews,
And none can us affright.

We'll eat like kings once we set sail,
Each vessel leaving land,
A wandering larder which entails
A feast on every hand;
Maize, apples, salmon, barley, rice,
Nutmegs, olives, South Sea spice,
Meats and India merchandise,
And all at our command!

We know the ports of all the world
All warehouses, all quays,
All islets coral-ringed and pearled,
The Blue Hesperides;
And men may search until they die,
And men may blow great fleets sky-high –
But rats alone can hold for aye
The Freedom of the Seas!
REFRAIN
And men may search until they die,
And men may blow great fleets sky-high –
But rats alone can hold for aye
The Freedom of the Seas!

Arrgghh!

I sing this one sometimes...the words are from memory, so they may be folked-up bit...

Missing
by A. A. Milne (tune available by H. Fraser-Simpson)

Has anybody seen my mouse?
I opened his box
For just a minute
Just to be sure
He was really in it...

I lifted the lid
Just to look inside...
I tried to catch him!
I tried, I tried...
He must be somewhere about the house;
Has anyone seen my mouse?

Uncle John, have you seen my mouse?
Just a small sort of mouse,
A dear little brown one
He came from the country,
He wasn't a town one

He's sure to be lonely
On a London street;
Oh where will he find
Something good to eat?
He must be somewhere - I'll ask Aunt Rose;
Have you seen a mouse with a whuffley nose?

He's somewhere about...

He just got out...

Has anyone seen my mouse?

I was given a mouse once from a woman at work. She caught it in her office and gave the mouse to me to find it a more appropriate home. I lived in the country at the time and my cat was too well fed to eat any indoor mouse. You guessed it, as soon as I got home with the mouse, he got loose. The mouse was often seen sharing a bowl of kibble with my cat Rosie. She shared her food with every critter out there in the woods anyway. She had an affair with a handsome skunk at one point.

I live in the city, so you can imagine our surprise when all these little rabbits turned up in our garden through a hole in the fence. I was about fifteen. I must have been there for an hour one day, just lying there with a piece of carrot in my outstretched hand, totally motionless, just waiting for one of them to trust me enough to take it. I got gradually nearer and more animated until one day, one of them let me stroke its nose, then its body. Soon, they all followed suit. I trained thm to come from wherever they were to be fed when I thumped the floor with my foot (like thumper!) We built a little shelter for them when they got too big to run under the shed when they got scared. Then the biggest one got so big that it couldn't get to us through the fence. We were quite upset until about twenty minutes later when we heard thumping at the garden gate and all the little ones ran over. It had walked around the street and found our house!!! It was crazy. My mum was scared of it, she said it looked at her 'evil'. It flicked wee at her once and she was inconsolable, I was bit worried too, but my dad said that it meant it was attracted to us. Still a worry....

OOne by one, they grew up and went elsewhere, but my mum and dad have still got the photos. That was a brilliant summer.

wdyat12... so what did they make you do for your initiation that was such a howl ?

Before anyone vomits, the "culinary" scene is tasfully done, and it is a howl, but his explanation to the Inuit elder re the ingestion of mice for science is priceless. Altogether the best laugh I have ever had. You gotta see it.

On an off note, some may think the movie is a bit far fetched. However, the story is true, although certain "literary license" is taken, as in all "stories". Farley Mowat was not too far from my uncle when he spent his time with the wolves and my uncle tells a different story of the wolves and of Farley, but the movie is extremely entertaining and worth the price of admission.

The song referred to by tiggerdooley on 23 Mar 01 is A Windmill In Old Amsterdam by Ronnie Hilton, although I only knew it by Freddie and the Dreamers. They omitted Verse 4 in their version.

INTRO E A | E A

VERSE 1
A (E)mouse lived in a (A)windmill in (D)old Amster(G)dam
A (C)windmill with a (Fmaj7)mouse in and (Bm7)he wasn't (E)grousin'
(E)He sang every (A)morning, "How (D)lucky I (G)am,
(C)Living in a (Fmaj7)windmill in (Bm7)old Amster(E7)dam!"

CHORUS
(E)I saw a Amouse!, (A7)Where?
(E)There on the stair!
(Bm7)Where on the stair?
(A7)Right (E)there!
A (E7)little (E)mouse with (A)clogs (A7)on
(E)Well I declare!
(E7)Going (Bm7)clip-clippety-(C)clop on the (E)stair
(E7)Oh (E)yeah

VERSE 2
This mouse he got lonesome, he took him a wife
A windmill with mice in, it's hardly surprisin'
She sang every morning, "How lucky I am,
Living in a windmill in old Amsterdam!"

CHORUS
I saw a mouse!, Where?
There on the stair!
Where on the stair?
Right there!
A little mouse with clogs on
Well I declare!
Going clip-clippety-clop on the stair
Oh yeah

(KEY CHANGE !!!!!!)

VERSE 3
(Fmaj7)First they had (Bm7)triplets and (E)then they had (A)quins
A (D)windmill with (G)quins in, and (C)triplets and (Fmaj7)twins in
They (Fmaj7)sang every (Bm7)morning, "How (E)lucky we (A)are
(D)Living in a (G)windmill in (C)Amsterdam, (Fmaj7)ya!"

CHORUS
(Fmaj7)I saw a (Bm7)mouse!, Where?
(Fmaj7)There on the stair!
(C)Where on the stair?
(Bm7)Right (Fmaj7)there!
A (Fmaj7)little mouse with (Bm7)clogs on
(Fmaj7)Well I declare!
Going (C)clip-clippety-(D)clop on the (Fmaj7)stair
(Fmaj7)Oh yeah

VERSE 4
The daughters got married and so did the sons
The windmill had christ'nins when no one was list'nin'
They all sang in chorus, "How lucky we are
Living in a windmill in Amsterdam Yah!"

CHORUS
I saw a mouse!, Where?
There on the stair!
Where on the stair?
Right there!
A little mouse with clogs on
Well I declare!
Going clip-clippety-clop on the stair
Oh yeah

OUTRO (play slower, emphasise the chord changes)

A Fmouse lived in a windmill, so snug and so nice
There's nobody there now but a whole lot of mice
.. Ohhh Yeahhhh
