From: GUEST,leeneia

Add these to your collection:

Them long steel rails with short crossties
Gonna carry me far from home.
That lonesome track gonna take me back
Where a man calls his soul his own.

You slighted me once. You slighted me twice.
You'll never slight me no more.
You caused me to weep. You caused me to mourn.
You caused me to leave my home.

Oh, don't you hear them mourning doves
That fly from pine to pine,
Mourning for their own true love,
Just like I mourn for mine?

The tune is modified for the third one - goes higher on the second line.

HTML line breaks added. --JoeClone, 4-Jun-02.

Grace, type 'in the pines' (without inverted commas) in the Digitrad and Forum search box on the main threads page and it should give you more than enough versions in DT and in forum. Also try alternative titles like 'Black Girl' and 'Longest Train'. There's also a related song in the black tradition 'Rolling Mill Blues' of which there was an early recording by Peg Leg Howell.

Perhaps you are looking for these wonderfully morbid ones with a blended rip-off from another favorite.

IN THE PINES, IN THE PINES
Version by Jackson Phibes

A long steel rail and a short cross-tie,
I'm on my way back home
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun never shines
And I shiver when the cold wind blows

Little girl, little girl
What have I done to make you treat me so?
You caused me to weep and you caused me to moan
So I stripped all the meat from your bones.
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun never shines
And I shiver when the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun never shines
And I shiver when the cold wind blows

The longest train that I ever saw
Was on that Graveyard Line
The engine passed at six o'clock
And the cab went by at midnight
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun never shines
And I shiver when the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun never shines
And I shiver when the cold wind blows

The only girl that I ever loved
Is on that train and gone
She lies in repose in the funeral car,
And she's there 'cause she done me wrong
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun never shines
And I shiver when the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun never shines
And I shiver when the cold wind blows

'Lectric chair is a-warmin' for dawn
And they're savin' me a place
Gee but the graveyard's a lonesome spot,
Lay ya back and throw the mud down in yer face
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun never shines
And I shiver when the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun never shines
And I shiver when the cold wind blows
(repeat ad nauseam)

Hope you have a lot of paper in your printer......."all" is related to "definitive".........and there are lots.

"Where did you sleep last night,
In the pines, etc."

Nirvana did a version of this on their "MTV Unplugged" album. There's information regarding the song here, taken from a New York Times article. Apparently there are over 160 versions of this song.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but does anyone have the Darby and Tarlton lyrics to this song? Their version was called "Loneseome in the Pines".

Here you go:

LONESOME IN THE PINES

I'm lonesome in the pines where the sun never shines
I shiver while the cold wind blows
I shiver while the cold wind blows, darlin'
In the pines where the sun never shines
Through the pines, little girl
Where the sun don't shine
I shiver while the cold wind blows

My sweetheart got killed last Friday night
Just a mile and a half from town
His head was found in the driver's wheel
And his body has never been found
In the pines, little girl, where the sun don't shine
I shiver while the cold wind blows

Uncle Sam got a train on the Baltimore & Maine
And she blows every nine hundred miles
The longest train I ever rode - through the pines
Where the sun never shines - through the pines
Little girl, where the sun don't shine
I shivered (sic) while the cold wind blows

My hat was shot, my head to the ground
To the pines where the sun never shines
I could hear the bullets go hummin' in the air
They were singing 'Home Sweet Home'
Now darlin', now darlin', don't tell me no lies
Where did you stay last night
I stayed in the pines where the sun never shines
I shivered while the cold winds blow
