My name is McShane from the plains of Kildare CHORUS: Room Toora La, Room Toora Laddie, Room Toora La Mush a room toralay
I parted with money so blithe and so jolly
I arrived at Dumbarton on a fine summers evening
I went into a woman to ask her for lodgings
So I went to this woman and asked her for lodgings
But a lump of a Tinker lay up in the corner
But he tried for to hit me a punch in the stomach
He lay on the floor like a sheep he was bleeding

03 Apr 01 - 09:20 AM (#431960) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: mcshane (finbar and furey) From: Maryrrf I think you are right. "Rusty" makes more sense. Tinkers repair pots and pans so there might well be pots lying around in the room. And I've heard of a whisky jar or bottle, but not a pot! I had an amusing thought while typing out these lyrics. I often scorn the banality, the triviality, the utter stupidity of pop music on the radio. And here I was trying to figure out the best way of spelling out "..Room Toora La, Room Toora Laddie... etc." Sometimes these choruses are pretty silly. But what the heck, they're so much fun!! |
20 Apr 01 - 11:33 AM (#445363) Subject: Lyr Add: MCSHANE (Finbar and Eddie Furey) From: Wolfgang Here's my try at a transcription of what the Fureys sing (the very few changes from Maryrrf's in bold for comparison). I had two further copies of the lyrics of that song to help me with the job. Does anyone know about where it comes from? Wolfgang
MCSHANE REPEAT FIRST VERSE. |
20 Apr 01 - 01:21 PM (#445436) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: mcshane (finbar and furey) From: Maryrrf Thanks, Wolfgang. And you posted the lyrics in the correct format, which I forgot to do. I will remember next time. I don't know where the song came from but it sure is a good one, and I haven't heard it sung much. I've added it to my repertoire and I'll see how it goes over! |
21 Apr 01 - 01:04 AM (#445917) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: mcshane (finbar and furey) From: GUEST I used to sing this song and once sang it while being filmed by the BBC. Unfortunately I sang "I went into a lodging and asked for a woman..." and got left on the cutting room floor. On the subject of nonsense choruses, I read that it stemmed from when songs used to be accompanied but were now being sung unaccompanied. The nonsense bit is just the instrumental break between verses. You can still here people do this when they sing pop songs etc. |

03 Mar 15 - 01:59 AM (#3691071) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: McShane (Finbar & Eddie Furey) From: GUEST,FiddleboyRay Guys, love the site and find it a great source of songs, music and information. Here is my version of McShane which i have been singing for about 40 years! MCSHANE My name is McShane from the plains of Kildare And I was a farmer 'til early last year Till I took a notion of higher promotion Over to England the harvest to share CHORUS: Rum Toora La, Rum Toora Laddie, Rum Toora La Mush a rum tooralay I parted with money so blithe and so jolly Bought a big stick for a staff in me hand And to keep myself cheery for fear I'd get weary I sang Paddywhack as I went on my way. I arrived in Dumbarton one fine summers evening Me bundle and staff, held them in me hands There were some of them laughing and some of them chaffin' More of them trying to stick Paddy away. I went to a woman and asked her for lodgings She says to me "young man, now don't look so dull! For I will tell you where you can find lodgings With the woman who lives next door to The Black Bull." So I went to this woman and asked her for lodgings She instantly showed me a bed in a room And I being so tired and worn out from me walking I threw myself down on the bed in that room. But a lump of a Tinker lay down in the corner He swore by the saints that he'd kill all was there Says I "Me bold Tinker, now hold up your braggin', For I am bold McShane from the plains of Kildare!" Well he jumped up and hit me a punch in the stomach I instantly gave him one back in the throat And the tinker he tumbled , fell into the corner And cut his head open on a rusty old bolt. He lay on the floor like a pig he was bleeding I swore by the saints that he'd part with his life But I swallowed me pride, sent down for a noggin And me and the Tinker we ended our strife. |
03 Mar 15 - 03:07 AM (#3691078) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: McShane (Finbar & Eddie Furey) From: Dave Sutherland I got the words of this song from Tommy Dempsey (when he was in a duo with Jonathon Swift) somewhere around 1968; when I talked to him about it a few years later he reckoned that around that time there would only be possibly three people in the UK singing it. |
03 Mar 15 - 06:27 AM (#3691103) Subject: Lyr Add: McSHANE (Finbar & Eddie Furey) From: GUEST,kenny I've only ever heard 2 people sing "McShane" - Eddie Furey, and also Bill Leiper, living in Aberdeen in the 1970s, who almost certainly got it from Eddie Furey.
With only a few minor changes to above, here's what I'm hearing Eddie Furey singing : |

03 Sep 17 - 10:00 PM (#3875059) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: McShane (Finbar & Eddie Furey) From: GUEST,GUEST This was helpful! To try and help more, I agree with the change 'put all his head in an auld rusty pot', which means there was no blood. In that case, I've also always heard "...like a sheep he was bleatin'..." This makes more sense to me. The tinker was making such a ruckus that you'd think he'd been killed. |
06 Sep 17 - 06:26 PM (#3875567) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: McShane (Finbar & Eddie Furey) From: Jim Dixon I listened via Spotify to this song on "The Spanish Cloak: The Best of the Fureys." I think hear "… an old whiskey pot" rather than "...rusty pot." I suppose "I'd" in verse 8 means "I had" rather than "I would." This certainly makes a difference in the meaning even though it's pronounced the same. |
