I was looking up some Henry Lawson books in the Blackheath library when the librarian who looked over my shoulder at the screen told me that Kmart in Katoomba has the complete works for $20. I dashed over there and sure enough they were there. Two volumes, each with about 900 pages for $20 the lot, not each. There is an equivalent set of the complete works of "Banjo" Paterson. Unfortunately neither of the gentlemen were there to sign the books. If they are in Katoomba they might be all over Sydney. I do suggest taking a look. That many pages in a standard paper binding won't last forever but $20..... Murray |

Neither of my books is anywhere near 900 pages. Both the Lawson volume and the Patterson one are 272 pages. Both were published by Angus and Robertson. It looks like the Lawson book was originally bought at The Craftsman Bookshop at the Village Kings Cross ---N.S.W. These seem to be complete compilations. Why 900 pages for the same thing??? The publishing history of the ones I just got don't mention A&R. As far as I can see they were originally published by Landsdowne Press in 1984. Are you making a tune for "Clancy", Frank? I don't think I ever heard it sung. The closest was hearing it recited with music in the background. It think it was the "Bushwackers" who did it. Murray |

A few months back, I went to Project Gutenberg and downloaded a couple of books, then printed them in a small format (2 pages to a sheet...small but readable) and punched holes and put them in a small binder so I could carry them easily. The whole process took about 20 minutes! The program I used for printing is freeware...PCBook2 ! It will do amazing things, and is great for printing songs, etc., in small fonts so you can slip a copy in a pocket for handy reference. |

They published extensively in other magazines as well as bringing out several books. My main reference set of Henry Lawson's poetry (apart from Chris Kempster's Songs from Henry Lawson is the 3-volume set by Colin Roderick. Admittedly, this has all the versions and variants as well as commentary and background. (And I have the boxed sets that Murray mentions ... and pretty much the same old ones you have as well.) I am interested to hear the various settings of these poems. I have seen a half dozen or so for Clancyin Australia ... not all so good. I'm not rapt in the country-style ones but the Wallis & Matilda tune works well (for me). I think I have the dots somewhere, transcribed for the dot-dependent in the group ... if I excavate through the next 15 years of accumulated detritus ...
