In New Zealand, Friday the 13th. is known as Black Friday. I am superstitious so 13 is an unlucky number. It was for JC.

I guess it has to happen every seven years, but the irony still catches me. Of course, something could be said about every seven years, too.

I thought Black Friday was the day the stock market collapsed in 1929? It was October something, maybe the 28th.

I'm sure Black Wednesday was the day my first wife told me to move out. Or maybe that was Black Thursday.

Since Friday the 13th means absolutely nothing to me, its falling on Good Friday doesn't thrill me all that much. I find such superstitions as Friday the 13th or black cats or walking under ladders a bit silly.

There was a 1954 movie called "Black Tuesday" starring Edward G Robinson. Its catch-line as I remember was "Black Tuesday - When the Killers Die." Absolutely nothing to do with Easter however :-)

Alex, your post reminds me of something Rodney Dangerfield said..."My wife got a home improvement loan, she gave me the $10,000 and told me to leave"

I read somewhere ,I not sure if it was accurate, that Friday the 13th gained it's rep because the first Good Friday took place on the 13th.

Since we are not sure what year the first Good Friday happened on, there is no way of knowing what day of the month it was. 13 being considered unlucky does not just apply to Friday's

With Easter itself being a variable day in between March 22 & April 25, Good Friday does not regularly fall on any date, much less the 13th. I found a table of Easters 1900-2089. Easter is on April 15 (Good Friday 13) 8 times in that time period. 1900, 1906, 1979, 1990, 2001, 2063, 2074, 2085. All you superstitious folks can relax now for 62 years & if you're still aroung then, rejoice! :-)

Alex, I agree, except for walking under a ladder. That's just common sense - at least it was for Peppi LePew's ( sp ? ) amie, n'est ce pas ?

That's why it's supposed to be unlucky to have 13 at dinner, unless one is the main course.....

13 was also supposed to be the number for witches sabbats, although that isn't really proven.

Thanks Liz,

I'd never bothered to consider why '13' was unlucky before - you're explanation makes some sort of sense.

Anyone have any other reasons?

Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving, when the Christmas shopping season officially (officiously?) begins.

LTS, I heard the witch thing too. Of course it doesn't need to be proven if enough people believe it -- the number will become "unlucky" even if unprovably so! That's superstition for you!

it's supposed to be unlucky to have 13 at dinner, unless one is the main course.....

Of course if one is the main course, one won't know HOW many people are at dinner, will one? (sorry, couldn't resist that -- your statement was so deliciously ambiguous -- pun intended!)

Gnu, granted on walking under a ladder; I just wouldn't purposely avoid it -- like walk around the building -- if there were no other way to go.

And thanks for the reminder of Pepe LePew.(sp?). Delightful cartoons.

When I get to trying to track down useless knowledge, I sometimes don't know where to stop. All you need to know about triskaidekaphobia

It's not clear to me if the unlucky 13th at the Last Supper was Jesus or Judas, I've found references to both. The most complete information was in a Smithsonian article I found. Here's the best part.

"Triskaidekaphobia can strike when you're most expecting it. (fear of the number 13), " by Paul Hoffman in Smithsonian, Feb 1987 v17 p122(9)
Triskaidekaphobes, the original Greek for those suffering from the morbid fear of the number 13, can muster ample historical evidence in support of their affliction. After all, Jesus was 13th at table and look what happened to Him. The belief that 13 people cannot dine together at the same table without fatal consequences actually goes back even farther than the Last Supper. Some popular accounts have it that in Norse mythology, the demonic god Loki crashed a dinner party of benevolent deities, making their number 13 and thus causing the death of Balder, the god of light.

The idea that numbers are not mere instruments of enumeration but are sacred, perfect, friendly, lucky or evil goes back to antiquity. In the sixth century B.C., Pythagoras … made a religion out of numbers. In numerology, the number 12 has always represented completeness, as in the 12 months of the year, the 12 signs of the zodiac, the 12 hours of the day, the 12 gods of Olympus, the 12 labors of Hercules, the 12 tribes of Israel, the 12 Apostles of Jesus, the 12 days of Christmas and so on. Since 13 exceeds 12 by only one, the number lies just beyond completeness and, hence, is restless to the point of being evil.

Friday the 13th is doubly potent because it draws not only on the evil power of the number 13 but on Friday's reputation as a day of bad luck. Since Christ was crucified on a Friday, the day can be seen as a time for endings, not beginnings. It has even been claimed through guilt by association that Eve gave Adam the apple on a Friday. Friday is no day for getting married, embarking on a journey, moving into a new house, starting a new job, weaning a child, cutting your nails or turning over a mattress. Moreover, until the end of the 19th century, Friday was known as Hangman's Day and was reserved for executions.

... as recently as 1978 it was estimated that triskaidekaphobia costs America a billion dollars a year in absenteeism, train and plane cancellations and reduced commerce on the 13th of the month.

Okay Burke, here's the solution to the problem that causing the annual billion dollar loss in the US. Cancel Friday 13th. Go straight from Thur. 12th to Fri. 14th and make the last day of the month, in a 31 day month, the 32nd. How come the giants of capitalism haven't thought of this before ?
