Recently I visited a famine graveyard at Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim Ireland. The graveyard also contains this inscription, "Within this graveyard lie the remains of John Gorman, 'Jack the Piper', born Derrylahan, Co Roscommon 1863, died Drumshanbo 1917". Does anyone know anything about this man?

Anybody recognize the tune yet? Hint, it's from 1706 and was recently revived for the theme song of 'Sharpe's Rifles' on PBS.

Weird - I heard the tune and immediately thought of the line "ower the hills and far away." Looked in the DT, and there are 6 versions. Click here for one.

Thanks Sorcha, so he was a trevelling musician. Wonder about his "tragic" death. I suspect this requires a little local knowledge. However I ws very moved to learn of his burial there with the famine victims.

Was he really a piper? What kind of pipes did he play?
Did he make money at it? Where did he play?
Did he play alone or with others?
Does your family have any music passed down by him?

He was my grand uncle -my Grandmothers sister-from Derrylahon, Castlerea, Co Roscommon

Famous piper as he was born blind crowned king of pipers -wrote his own music and poetry

hello, stumbled on this page looking for information about the Gorman's of Derrylahan. I trace my relations back to a Patrick Gorman born in this part of Roscommon about 1859 and baptized in Loughglynn Parish. He married a woman named Bridget Waldron from Cartron/Coolnaha South in Aghamore Parish about 1877. Their residence is reported as Carrowbehy in the baptism records when they baptized their first four children in Loughglynn parish (about 1878 through 1882). What I believe is his baptism registry from Loughglynn said that his parents were John and Mary FLannigan. Believe he might have had a brother Michael born 1856. John Gorman appears as a tenant on the Griffith’s valuation in the town of Derrylahan, in the civil parish of Tibohine, which looks consistent with the Catholic parish of Loughglynn.   John Gorman, per the Valuation, resided in cottages noted as 8 a and 8b in the middle of the small townland known as Derrylahan, which is located east of Errit Lough in a small area that I think is known today commonly as Derrylahan, Kilruane, Co. Roscommon. There were a few other Gorman's in this small townland called Derrylahan. Wonder how they relate. Any family connections you can explain, please let me know. My Great grandfather was John Gorman from Derrylahon, Roscommon and his wife was Mary Flanagan. They were parents to John the Blind piper and Ellen (my Grandmother), Bridget, Martin, Annie and I believe there were more maybe Patrick-They must be the same Gorman family. Are you on 23and me by any chance as I am?

The John Gorman and Mary Flanagan you mentioned, from Derrylahan, Roscommon, were my Great grandparents and were parents to John the blind piper, my grandmother Ellen, Martin, Bridget, Annie and other Siblings, I believe Patrick.

We must be related then Are you on 23and and me as I am and we could connect there?

Just yesterday, Sunday 26th May, there was the unveiling of a new monument in memory of John Gorman in the graveyard in Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim where he is buried.

There was a great gathering of musicians and relatives of John Gorman at the graveyard for the unveiling.
A piper played some tunes in his memory and then there was a session in one of the pubs in the town.

You may also be interested to know that the most recent edition of An Píobaire magazine (Vol. 15, Issue 2) contains a thoroughly researched article about John Gorman written by Paul Waldron & Michael Kelly.

Na Píobairí Uilleann digitises all these magazines so in due course this editon of An Píobaire will also be added to their website.
