It means "late on the levee", an old phrase which rounders used to employ back in the 1800's. Loosely translated, it implies that you haven't quite caught up with reality or are "out to lunch" or "a couple of beers short of a six pack", to use more modern expressions.

Does that help? :-)

Deni, don't let them get ya down. Someone asks about every four or five months. It ought to be posted in the FAQ, and then we could chide people for not reading the FAQ. Hell, maybe it IS in the FAQ, I can't remember if I saw it there!

Anyway, how about you go read the FAQ and see, and if it ain't there suggest it, and then help orient someone next time around?

WOBH = Whale Oil Beef Hooked. Say it fast and you will get it. I think it may be Aussie in origin-- it was born in a thread I think.

Is LOL taken as a Mudcat name BTW?

I think someone ought to claim SBUAPAA right away.

Like kytrad, another of our members thought i8t meant "Love On Line"...pretty similar. This became a problem when someone was telling a tale of woe and poor annamil put in a response which included LOL.......and it made no sense and made this sweet member sound really calloused and cruel. We all had a good laugh straightening her out and after a brief stay at the NYCFTTS she was allowed back in polite society.

I looked through that list of acronyms - what a hoot!

Here are some alternative names for WYSIWIG:

WYSIAWYG-What You See is Almost What You Get
WYSINWNWYG- What You See Is No Where Near What You Get
WYSINWYG-What You See Is NOT What You Get
WYPIWYG- What You Printed Is What You've Got
WYTYSYDG-What You Thought You Saw, You Didn't Get

We could invent a WYSIWYG mood barometer, so depending on her mood the outcomes would change *g*

Here is one problem we rarely have at Mudcat:

TSOHF Total Sense of Humor Failure

But this one *can* be a problem at the 'Cat sometimes:

ROTBA Reality on the Blink Again

I kind of like this one - reminds me of the 'Cat too, sometimes, e.g. the Mudcat tavern threads:

ROFFNAR Rolling on the Floor for no Apparent Reason

This one reminds me of the User Friendly cartoons:

PBKAC Problem Between Keyboard and Chair

This one is for a lot of 'Catters:

IITYWTMWYBMAD If I Tell You What This Means Will You Buy Me A Drink?

But this one is especially for Big Mick when talking to the Fair alison:
IITYWTMWYKM If I Tell You What This Means, Will You Kiss ME?

This one is pretty useful for some of our BS topics:

IARTPFWTSIOWIM I am Repeating this Parrot fashion without the slightest idea of what it Means

These remind me of 'Spaw for some reason:

GD&R Grinning, Ducking and Running
GD&RVVF Grinning, Ducking and Running Very Very Fast

This is my favourite - now who can I use it on?

TDMATBICPLY This Doesn't Mean A Thing But It Confuses People Like You

But the main thing I noticed was that there were far too many nasty acronyms on that list, and yet I have never seen them here on the Mudcat forum, either as acronyms or spelled out. That's a really nice reminder of why I love coming here.

The editor of the Mudcat FAQ is a veteran of 3 years of military service and 25 years of civil service, and never, ever wants to see another acronym for as long as he lives! Just last week, he had a severe attack of acronymophobia when he encountered a message peppered by acronyms, posted by an apparent acronymphomaniac. The FAQ editor finally found relief when he discovered this Acronym Dictionary thread.
The FAQ editor considers online acronyms to be obnoxious and unnecessary. There will never be a glossary of acronymns in the FAQ as long as this editor is in control, but a link to the acronym dictionary will be added to the FAQ (reluctantly). [grin]

JO, thanks for the laugh!

I looked at the thread & back at the link I put in. Some acronyms have been around so long that no one thinks about them any more: CEO, PC, my SO, FAQ, GIGO, KISS. Others are newer but pretty widely used: LOL, IMHO, AFAIK, IIRC, WYSIWYG are all ones I know pretty well at sight.

Then there are the ones, like all the winkies & smilies, simply made up for the dictionary that no one really uses. TDMATBICPLY indeed! [:-{) SPAW, what does NYCFTTS mean? What does SPAW stand for?

What was that "beer-out-the-nose" acronym somebody mentioned in another thread? I made the mistake of reading it when I was drinking a beer, and the same thing happened to me. I'm very susceptible to that. Max got me thoroughly embarrassed at the Getaway that way - he said something about his one kid with the middle name "Dylan" and the other with the middle name "Joanbaez." I snorted beer all over.

I ws once on a trade union course about a management initiative called the FAMAS(Financial and Management Accounting System) which was part of the FMI (Financial Management Initiative). By the third day we were on the second jargon sheet containing lists of acronyms which had been mentioned together with their definitions.

Our tutor, a very down to earth ex NUM (National Union of Mineworkers) activist came in and asked "Does anyone know anything about fish?" "What does it stand for?" asked one of the students. The tutors reaction is not printable.

My favourite management acronym was 'MARILYN' - Management and Recruitment in the Lean Years of the Nineties. I'm sure they made the problem up just for the acronym.

Not that it matter - and I would guess that most everyone here understood - I did know what FAQ stood for. I just thought it was funny that Joe unknowingly used it in a short rant about he hates acronyms.

I tend to dislike them too - but any organization is suseceptiple to their use - it is just so easy to use shorthand. For instance I am the Chairperson for the FDCMYASC of the UUA. (Florida District Campus Ministry / Young Adult Sub-Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Association.) yikes!

The sad thing is that there is a Unitarian Church known as F.U.C.K. ME - the First Unitarian Church of Kennebunkport Maine.

We need to work on the beer acronym Joe mentioned. I didn't find anything in a forum search. It's got to have SBOMN (spewing or spraying beer out my nose) or SBOOMN (spewing beer out of my nose) as part of it. LOLSBOOMN? ROTFLMAOSBOOMN?

Hi Burke - No were the UUA which long ago broke off from the anscestor to the UCC.

I'm not aware of what the UUC is - there is the UUSC - the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee - our international aid organization.

I am also part of the CUUYAN - The Continental Unitarian Universalist Young Adult Network - as well. And my local young adult group uses "POA" - which stands for People of Action or Pieces of Ass depepnding on how frisky we are feeling.

I am also a member of TUUSH - Tanned UUs for Social Harmony - the local UU nudist group.

G'day WYSIWYG:

"WOBH = Whale Oil Beef Hooked. Say it fast and you will get it. I think it may be Aussie in origin-- it was born in a thread I think."

I think you will find this a lot older than the net ... and Pommy (English) in origin. I first heard it from and old Pom with whom I worked at British Leyland (Australia) around 1970 - and he said he had seen it as an entry in Punch Magazine's competition for witty new captions to old cartoons. The published cartoon for this month's comp. had an astonished fisherman on a beach, reeling in a whale ... and the new caption was roughly what you quote.

I'm afraid the credit can be calimed by neither us Aussies nor us nerd nerds.

I can't recall now what thread it was first in and who posted it, and the old 486 and modem are not in happy partnership tonight so it will not be me who goes looking this time. But I think we should put Bob's explanation into that thread too just to make it all right, or a link to here. I'm not saying whoever posted it tried to claim credit-- that's probably just my CRS. But I think it ought to be there-- someone find it maybe? Because we do refer people back to it from time to time.
