Robin Hood ballads - in Canada

Hi, if any Canadian folk musicians are interested in the Robin Hood ballads, I'd be interested in talking to you.

I'm taking part in the 3rd Biennial academic conference on Robin Hood studies. As it's being held at the University of Western Ontario this year (previous conferences were held in Rochester, NY in 1997 and Nottingham in 1999), I felt Canadian versions of the legend needed to be discussed. So, I'll be chairing a workshop called Robin Hood in Canada. (I'll also be delivering a paper on modern interpretations of the sheriff.)

Anyway, I was recently flipping through Bronson's collection of tunes for the Child ballads, and I noticed how many of the tunes came from the maritimes.

So, I'd love to talk to some people about the Canadian folk tradition of Robin Hood.

Can anyone tell me anything about the two new Robin Hood ballads that were found not too long ago in a Welsh manuscript, and subsequently were acquired by the British Library?

PS: All known authors of Robin Hood ballads are noted in the Robin Hood section at the end of the broadside ballad index on my website. www.erols.com/olsonw. Most aren't given on that .rochester.edu Robin Hood website.

In 1993, a Bristol bookseller auctioned off an untitled manuscript for an unpublished 1670s collection of Robin Hood ballads. This was called the Forresters Manuscript after the title of the first ballad.

Some ballads, such as Robin Hood and Queen Catherin and Robin Hoods Fishing, are longer and more complete than any other versions.

"New" ballads include "Robin Hood and the Bride" (a relative of the Alan a Dale story), "Robin Hood and the Old Wife" (a reworked version of Robin Hood and The Bishop), "Robin Hood and the Sheriffe" and "Robin Hood and the King" (using some concepts in other ballads.)

The book is available with an introduction and notes by Stephen Knight (a copy is currently resting on my lap).

Welcome to Mudcat Allen. I told you we had some interested folks here. Good luck in your search. By the way I've found a tape (a very old one,) where I got my version. Maybe I can make a copy for you. As I said, the A.T. recording is long out of print.

Well I ordered the book. It wan't easy. Amazon.com keeps getting harderr and harder to order from, and they try to fill your computer with cookies. I looked at Borders and that was about as bad. I even tried the publisher Boydell & Brewer (I got their Pepys Ballads back when it was $375 for the 4 vols. I was close to $1000 when it went out of print). I just ended up someplace in Indiana where I couldn't find a way to order.

I just want to find and order a book on my VISA debit card.
1: I don't want cookies
2: I don't want to set up an account
3: I don't want a password to remember
4: I don't want all those advs obscuring the buttons for searching and ordering.
5: I don't want their email specials

Does anyone know of an easy way to order books.
It's no wonder that Amazon.com has never had a profitable year, they do their darndest not to sell books.

I finally got it ordered. If I had waited to today I could have ordered it at a Borders about a mile and a half away from me.
